Long-Kicking -
Play out of the backline will trend towards long kicks to contests. We have recruited this way, and will almost certainly select this way. The aim will be to cover large sections of ground in short disposal chains. Kick to defensive 50 boundary, kick to mid wing boundary, kick to offensive 50 boundary. This will require a strong marking presence out of both tall and smaller players. Link players will be encourage to sit defensive side of packs, create space then kick to position over players.
Didn't this gameplan get tweaked during the year? From the wing; rather than kicking long to the forward flanks I think there was a deliberate effort to chip it into the centre of the ground. It opens up the whole field for your forwards to lead to & if there is a turnover it's not as dangerous as one back inside defensive 50

Great post by the way

Yeah kinda
Comprehensive post.

Whilst I dont always agree with your players chosen for particular positions - your methodology and logic in arriving there is quite sound.

Not 100% sure I agree with the concept of a forward pocket needing to be tall.....sometimes you need crumbers.

Things i'd consider:
- We know that Walker is likely to play forward - which opens a spot in defense potentially for Sheehan (who I see as best 22), or to switch Docherty into defense
- I'd expect Tutt to get a game before Ellard - otherwise the club shouldnt have picked him up

I think we are moving away from crumbers, or at least from primary crumbers. Mids to fill the void.

Walker would definitely fit into the forward line, but he is a very good choice in the back, which makes me wonder.

I like Ellard's defensive pressure more. Tutt would be one of the high forwards if selected. His 3km time trial speaks to how well he could play this role

Great post.
I expect to see jaksch lining up in a back pocket. ATM he cant stand the gorillas physically but the third tall would be ideal. There is no use wasting him in the 2's

Fantastic post Blue and Silver. Top marks for taking the time and effort to pump all that out.

I'm not so sure that the game plan sections are quite the way you have described, but it's a common belief.

When you (and Malthouse) talk about players having a defensive mindset, I get the impression that a lot of people see that as a plan that creates low-scoring games. I don't think that's the case at all. What I believe it to mean is that players have to always be accountable. Malthouse won't stand for players who work off their man when the ball is still a bit 50/50, trying to get ahead of them to run into open space in attack, only to have their man affect the contest or come away with the ball and burn us going the other way.

It's like when we (or any side) are down a few goals with only a short time left on the clock - suddenly the game opens up and the team that's behind can start hitting up players in space going forward. The reason for this is because they have stopped being accountable for their opponents (or 'zone') and are working off the play into space, hoping their teammates can win the ball and get it to them. I have just been watching a few older matches from back in 2011 and 2012 and that sort of thing was happening heaps for us. Players had more of a licence to take the game on and leave their player. Malthouse is not a fan of this and I understand why.

I think the plan is always for us to play accountable, 'percentage' football, which, when we get it right for long periods and gel as a team, will see our scoring going up and scores against go down. When we get back to being in the top few teams for winning contested footy and, as you mentioned, improve the tackling, Malthouse's game plan will show its strengths.

Just out of interest, can I ask if anything changes if the VFL/AFL terminology of 150 years "attacking" is used here, Nathan?

There's a thought... Could Carrotts play predominantly forward? Just an idle thought, go easy on me.
I still think the best shut down role I've ever seen him play was as a defensive forward on Hodge in 2009, the day Fev missed the game winner. Not that it means anything as far as a permanent spot in 2015 goes.

Wasn't it Robbie warnock's birthday yesterday? I didn't see anything from Carlton on Facebook only northern blues?

Am I just imagining things
