Ok let me at it!

HF: Fasolo, Reid, Sidebottom
F: White, Cloke, Elliott
R: Grundy, Pendlebury (C), Beams (VC)

Sub: Dwyer
Emerg: J.Thomas, Goldsack, Blair

My general thoughts:
BACKS
* Maxwell WILL start round one.
* Scharenburg WILL BE ELITE, but will not be best 22 until mid-year, will probably take Maxwell's place
* Reid to start forward. Keeffe, Brown and Scharenburg will form the nucleus of defense in 2014
* Armstrong to pressure Seedsman & Williams for spots
* Would love to see Ramsay do well this year
* Oxley in front of Langdon and Frost
MIDS
* Can't fit J.Thomas in, same type as Ball, Adams etc. Great battle for inside mid positions! Can I pick a best 23?
* Would expect Freeman & Broomhead to play 5-10 senior games each, minimum
* Would expect natural improvement from Ben Kennedy, but not best 22 at this stage
* Martin will be promoted at some stage
* Witts should be in front of Lynch for FWD/2nd RUCK spot
* Hudson 3rd or 4th ruck now, great back-up
FORWARDS
* Karnezis & Sinclair to compete for small forward/rotating mid spots
* Marsh a wildcard, but senior footy in 2014 would surprise
* Lynch is depth now. Best appears behind him, but can still perform a role

Mooney, Clarke & Yagmoor have others passing by them, and new recruits moving in. This could signal the end for them this year. Would love to see these guys have big seasons.

Of course I could be wrong, but thats my 2 cents and 15 minutes. :D:thumbsu:

Impossible to fit everyone in. Other than 2010, I can't remember us having depth of this quality at any stage in past 25-30 years.

FB Williams Brown Toovey
HB Reid Keefe Sidebottom
C Adams Beams O'Brien
HF Swan White Fasolo
FF Blair Cloke Elliott
R Grundy Pendles (C) Ball (VC)
INT J.Thomas Young Karnezis Seedsman
EMERG Dwyer Macaffer Goldsack

DEPTH Maxwell Lynch Witts Hudson Armstrong Oxley Martin Broomhead Kennedy Scharenberg Freeman Langdon Marsh Ramsay Mooney Yagmoor

Ball-magnets and damaging players on every line. Perhaps a little slow, which might increase chances for Freeman, Marsh, etc. Fast & precise ball movement more important than outright foot-speed, IMO.

I have two lingering concerns:
1. Who takes the kick-ins? My preference is probably Seedsman but is he really a defender and is he a lock in starting 22?
2. What happens if Grundy cops an early season-ending injury. None of White, Hudson, Witts or Lynch is up to the task of rucking all season. Grundy is nearly our most important player after just a handful of games.

We have a genuine Top-4 side there, if we can minimise the LTI's.

I will have a crack at this.

Best 22 (1st Round)
B: Williams Brown Toovey
HB: Seedsman Keefe Maxwell
C: O'Brien Swan Sidebottom
HF: Beams Reid White
F: Fasolo Cloke Elliot

Int: Adams, Blair, J Thomas, Goldsack or Maccaffer

By round 10
Forced Out: Maxwell, Blair
Maybe Forced Out: Seedsman, Goldsack, Caff & J Thomas

Slightly different approach rather than pigeon holing some players in a position when they might play several and actual best 22 will depend on who we are playing.

19 guys when fit pretty much pick themselves for me:
FB:Williams, Brown, Toovey
HB: Scharenberg, Keeffe, Young
C: O'Brien, Ball, ?
HF: White, Cloke, Beams
FF: Elliott, Reid, ?
Rucks: Grundy, Pendlebury, Swan
Inter: Sidebottom, Adams, Macaffer, ?

* Scharenberg, Reid provide flexibility to go forward or back
* Young may be better suited to a wing
* I want Cloke 40+ from goal when kicking and he's got the endurance
* White can play HFF or FP or swap with Reid for FF to run opposition defenders ragged, and keep them away from Cloke
* Macaffer as tagger or defensive forward role
* With 4 taller players down back & 3 up fwd there's probably only room for one of Seedsman, Goldsack, Oxley & Maxwell to come in although I suspect Maxwell to be the only one who lacks run.

16 guys fighting for the remaining 3 spots and providing depth for injuries
J Thomas - midfield depth and some scope up forward
Blair, Kennedy, Fasolo, Dwyer fighting for Fwd Pocket / midfield depth
Seedsman - an option for wing or hbf
Goldsack - provides good flexibility, prefer him as defensive fwd but can be wing or hbf
Sinclair - will get games in backline when 3rd smaller player required / extra pace
Maxwell - option for hbf, extra leadership
Oxley - similar to Goldsack but probably prefer down back sharing kick ins with Scharenberg
Lynch - 2nd or 3rd tall fwd plus back up ruck role sees Lynch mainly fighting for a spot against White
Witts - my preferred option as 1st ruck if Grundy not available or needs a rest, keep developing his FF potential
Broomhead, Karenzis, Freeman, Langdon - slightly unknown quantities for me due to my lack of knowledge & their lack of exposed senior form

Leaving Clarke, Frost, Yagmoor, Ramsay, Martin, Mooney, Hudson, Armstrong, Marsh as depth / needing further development.

Swans nearly 30 that is depressing.

we would have the same problem we had for most of this year. We need 2 key forwards and a fwd/ruck, not a key forward and a fwd/ruck. 2011 we had cloke and dawes as key forward and leigh brown as fwd/ruck.
It will work with reids versatility, if we need him to go back, he goes back. He might only play one full year in the fwd line? And he may go down back and become the chb of the competition again. But until we have a another key fwd as good as him he will need to stay fwd imo.

It will be hard for some to cope him in being at chf but imagine to gun fwds both getting around 60 goals? How amazing would that be?

What also would be awesome is making a huge play for Lachlan Henderson from the blues, hes pretty much another ben reid and the same age, they could swap from chb to chf threw games and can both finish with over 30 goals, and carltons only decent key position player would be ours.

Barring injury and any massive form shifts, I think this is the most realistic looking lineup.

Yeah, really wanted to get Goldsack in there as well.
Probably have him emergency with Dwyer and Young at this stage.
But Young does offer bit off a wing and im sure he was recruited for a reason, just needs to get on the park.

Do you think that both Young and O'Brien are fixed on the wings (non-negotiable) or could others challenge their position e.g. Seedsman?

I think that most positions these days, especially the midfield, have many players rotated through there. Young and O'Brien should spend a lot of time there, but by no means they will be fixed.

Seedsman is definitely one that will move between HBF and wing.
