Impey Barrass Dimma
Scrim Battle Weddle
Finn Newk Mass
Moore Gunston CMac
Ginni Chol Sicily
Meek Day Worps
Nash Wiz Amon Frenchie
Bruest

Frost out based on his limited preseason and Calsher due to injury. Bruest in due to likely number of ground balls, particularly with scrappy nature of the Round 1 games.

Would go for the bigger body of Finn and play Dimma back to cover their small/mid sized forwards.

Clubs generally give one or two kids who've been training the house down over summer a spot in the first game or two... wouldn't surprise me if it takes 'til round 3 or 4 to resemble something like our best 22

I don’t think any of our 2024 draftees will get a sniff for a while. There’s also a heap of competition for spots; so I imagine we hit round one at full strength. We have a couple in their second and third preseason who will take a spot based on its merits though.

Given his illness? He was sick for like a week. Hardly rules him out for the OR.
No it doesn’t but it sets him back and he was already in a battle to make the team anyway. Not saying he can’t just my opinion that everything needed to go right for him to start R0 I think Mackenzie is in front of him.

Been following the mighty Hawkers since the early 70s, I'm not sure I've ever seen such versatility/flexibility in a Hawk side. These are the players I feel can be considered 'swingmen', ie blokes who can swing into a different role/area on the field than they're normally associated with comfortably, and contribute: Weds, Battle, Sic, Dimma, Gunners, Chol, Nash, Moore, and I'm probably missing a couple.

It's really quite phenomenal.

What's the go with Dear? Never seen a timeline on return

Personally I like Sicily back and put forward for emergencies but if Dear and Lewis are out for a while, Gunston must play unless Reeves has learnt how to use his size

The same versatility existed in the 80s (Langford kicked 3 in a quarter once when needed to go forward) the problem was each line was so dominant we never needed that versaility. How often did a line lose to their opponents.

Ayers played on the wing in the 86 GF and won the norm smith. That team could have been coached by my neighbour's dog walker's hair dresser.

I’ll have a crack.

BACKLINE

B. Hardwick - T.Barrass - J.Scrimshaw
J.Sicily - J. Battle - K.Amon

MIDFIELD
J. Weddle - W. Day - M. D’Ambrosio
L. Meek - J.Newcombe - C.Mackenzie

FORWARDS

D. Moore - M.Ramsden - C. MacDonald
J. Ginnivan - M. Chol - N. Watson

INTERCHANGE
J. Ward - C. Nash - J. Worpel - J.Impey - J.Gunston

Think Gunston can play and Ramsden may not, but with this.

You have got Hardwick who can go forward, good defensive depth and Weddle able to go back, players who can play wing and midfield as a rotation but also others who can float forward such as Newcombe & Day.

Interested to see how the match sims and practice games line up. Frost also close.

Ok, giving this a shot.

FB: Impey Barrass Scrimshaw
HB: Amon Battle Day
C: Morrison Worpel Weddle
HF: Gunston Sicily Moore
FF: Ginni Chol Wiz
Foll: Meek Nash Duke
Bench: MacKenzie Cmac Mass Hardwick
Sub: Punky

Unlucky: Ward CJ Finn Mitchell Reeves Huss Ramsden

Injured: Frost Dear Blanck Lewis

CJ close, I can’t find a spot for him personally at this stage.

Weddle could go forward and he could go to half back pushing Amon to the wing, but this just won’t happen.

He’s competing with Amon and Impey as running half backs, Weddle on the wing aswell as others.

He hasn’t shown enough aswell to cement himself into the side yet, but his performance this pre season is positive.

Morrison is a depth player imo, I like how reliable he is, but I don’t think I can put him ahead of anyone else. CJ ahead.

Yeah agree with this. Ramsden seems like a candidate for what you’re saying in the last sentence, especially with no Dear and Lewis available early in the season.

Based on pre-season reports so far I've tweaked my original team
to:

B: Impey, Barrass, Scrimshaw
HB: Amon, Sicily, Battle
C: Massimo, Day, Weddle
HF: Moore, Chol, Watson
F: Ginnivan, Ramsden, Hardwick
R: Meek, Newcombe, Nash
Int: Worpel, Mcdonald, Mackenzie, Jiath - Breust (sub)

Basically I've changed my mind on CJ considering what he's doing so far and I'm convinced Max will get a gig first-up.
Ward very unlucky to miss out but I just can't fit them all in.

With the depth we now possess it will be interesting to see how many players get rotated in and out of the senior side every week.

Will Sam value squad consistency or will he pick teams purely on form? There will be some very handy players playing at Box Hill each that will be putting pressure on the last three picked in the senior side every week.

Personally I always think you pick the players in form.

Who are the walk up starts for round 1?

Newcombe
Impey
Worpel
Sicily
Amon
Nash
Day
Moore
Scrimshaw
Hardwick
D’Ambrosio
Meek
Chol
Weddle
Battle
MacDonald
Ginnivan
Watson
Barass

That’s 19 walk ups by my estimation. Chol by virtue of injuries to other key forwards and Meek ahead of Reeves based on last years form. Although Reeves looks to be bridging the gap during preseason. Anyone see anyone else as a round 1 walk up. MacKenzie? Gunston?
