Prediction Best 22 for Round One, 2017

Our best players came from before Hardwick (except Martin) because:

1. THey have been playin longer and are the most experienced?
2. They were taken with much higher picks

So 35 Dogs players are better than Bontempelli because they have been playing longer?

the "match ups" mentioned were regarding the sides that could play rd 1. but hey, any excuse to bag the coach....
It's actually a key match up though, our best 22 is currently better than theirs but not by a mile and only really due to more senior players, where Carlton actually have an equalising presence is in the coaches box. But hey any excuse for you to jump on your high horse blah blah blah.

So our team without edwards/rance/cotchin/riewoldt is worse than our team from 2010?

lol
I went to 2009 the list that was labelled worse than Fitzroy and omitted from both sides the 4 players you mention from both.
the best 22 for both yrs and god yes im bound to have plenty wrong but its just to give an idea.

2009
b: Moore - McGuane - Bowden.
hb: Newman - Polak - Deledio
c: White - Tuck - Cousins
hf: Nahas - Richo - Brown
ff: Vickery - Schulz - Morton
r:: Graham - Jackson - Foley.
i/c: Raines - coughlan - Mcmahon - Pettifer.

2017
b:: grimes - garthwaite - morris/batchelor
hb: Houli - Astbury - Markov/short
c:: B Ellis - Martin - Grigg
hf: rioli - Elton - Lloyd
ff: Lennon - Griffiths - Bolton
R: Hampson - Caddy - Prestia.
i/c: Vlastuin - Miles - Menadue - McIntosh

Obviously the 2009 team is full of older players so i have where possible picked older players omitting blokes like hunt and Lambert who will probably early on in the season get priority.I have also tried to not pick unproven juniors unless there is no other option.

I have no further comment on this just thought it would be interesting to do the actual comparison.

The 09 side would bolt in just with Richo present

i know the Coach needs to fire them up etc but if they want to roll up Rd 1 & go through the motions after getting flogged all summer as per the last couple pf years then perhaps the players might want to ask themselves if Footy is for them.

I haven't seen in a best 22 in a while so I should (not bother too) through in my two cents with a lineup almost everyone has probably agreed on 50 pages in.

B: Grimes - Rance - Short
HB: Houli - Astbury - Markov
C: Martin - Cotchin - Miles
HF: Edwards - Griffiths - McIntosh
F: Rioli - Riewoldt - Lloyd
R: Hampson - Prestia - Caddy
Int: Vlastuin - Menadue - Grigg - C.Ellis

Emg: B.Ellis, T.Hunt, Nankervis

who knows: Lennon, Conca, Lambert, Batchelor, Drummond, Townsend, Elton, Castagna
As an outsider Ill have a go
B: Grimes Rance Short
HB: Houli Astbury B.Ellis
C: McIntosh Cotchin Prestia
R: Nankervis Vlaustin Martin
HF: Caddy Griffiths Edwards
FF: Rioli Riewoldt Lloyd
I/C Menedue, Graham, Markov, Hampson

You had me until the very last name.

First post lads so take it easy on me :)

Assuming all fit and form warrants and a more fluent moving style this is my starting 22

B: Grimes, Astbury, Short
HB: Houli, Rance, Mackintosh
C: Markov, Vlastuin, Grigg
HF: Caddy, Griffiths, Martin
F: Lloyd, Riewoldt, Rioli
Foll: Maric, Cotchin, Prestia
IC: C Ellis, Edwards, Nankervis, Miles
Emerg: Graham, B Ellis, Batchelor, Castagna

I'm hoping that Maric can have one more year while Nankervis gets some valuable game time but as resting ruck/forward

Martin to play a high HF along with Caddy and push up into the midfield as Cotchin and Prestia need spells.

Lloyd was our second highest goal scorer last year so he gets my first nod over Edwards

Rioli to feed off the spilt pill from Griffiths and Jack

Markov & Grigg on a wing each with Vlastuin finally rewarded with his best position, in the guts.

Houli gives us run and carry and same with Mackintosh.

Short to play the deep small defender role.

Three talls for the power forwards with Rance the general back there.

Fingers crossed to see a reinvigorated 2015 fast moving style as opposed to the game we had to play last year due to injuries.

The obvious ones.
Inside ball winning - Been addressed to a degree with three additions Caddy, Prestia, Graham, plus Vlastuin changing roles.
fwd pressure/sml goalkicking - Again being addressed with Rioli, Bolton, stengle and Lloyd.

Would add willingness to run hard when we have the ball gut running either way has not been a strength apart from a couple.
Yeah, you're right. I stupidly assumed that we would naturally run hard, with the ball.

Like it YnBlack, but reckon FWd pocket is better for a Cyril Rioli than a Dan, Dan has a tank and we need him involved, I like him at HFf at least, even wing, though it's a bit early I know.

Edwards to Fwd pocket, Rioli to wing, Griggs to bench, it's pretty close to my side.

This is how I would like to start the party this year. Of course some of these players will need to impress in the preseason or should be well and truly overlooked for younger players.

B: Grimes, Astbury, Batchelor
HB: McIntosh, Rance, Houli
C: B.Ellis, Cotchin, C.Ellis
HF: Lennon, S.Edwards, Griffiths
F: Rioli, Riewoldt, Martin
R: Hampson, Prestia, Caddy
Int: Miles, Conca, Vlastuin, Grigg

The younger players can then apply pressure to keep our senior players under pressure.

BOOOOOOOOO. After the yr we just had, apart from the very obvious choices they all start even and in fact the younger blokes are given priority and the blokes who have had so much opportunity and failed so often are the ones who have to put the juniors under pressure.

What you actually propose is to keep doing what has has failed in almost every way.
It is time our mindset changed and maybe our fortunes will change with it. We can not just keep on doing the same things over and over and expect things to be different

That side will struggle to take us places. Not enough upside and too many blokes that have had up to three goes at it and failed.
We need new faces while Jack Tross Cotchin Prestia and Dusty are there otherwise time will expire for all.

Another one...take risks. Attack. Take the game on. Playing safe only encourages the opposition to attack.
i see just you me and TI are prepared to join in in this.i was hoping enough people would say what they think needs fixing and then we could pick players who fill the need.
Ie we lack pace, tackling, defensive pressure in the fwd half i would have thought two who have the attributes to address this are Rioli and Bolton. If we are serious with Vickery gone we lack a third tall fwd but not another dinosaur like him rather a quick strong marking mobile third tall type to go with Riewoldt and Griffiths.
Really an opportunity to pick players to fit the need.A team made up from everyones thoughts what needs to be done.
