B: Dimma, Blanck, DGB
HB: Scrimmers, Siss, Jiath
C: Day, Ward, Amon
HF: Macca, Ramma, Moore
F: Wingard, Lewis, Bruest
Foll: Reeves, Newk, Finn
I/C: Morris, Stephens, Meek, Nash, Tsatsas/Poo/McKenzie

Next soldiers in line: Worpel, Morrison, Kozi, Impey, Frost, Butler, Brocky, Jeka, Serong, Lynch, Bramble, Long

Couple of points that will make us competitive next year:

  • We have quite a few elite gut runners on our list and our two way running will be a factor late in quarters/games. With better kicks across the ground we will also get better in executing Sammies attacking game plan/style,
  • I have Finn as a walk up start in the midfield as his contribution in shutting down the oppositions best mid (whether it’s a bull, gut runner, small, big, tall etc) is an underrated weapon that Sam has up his sleeve. Nash is in there as well, with Newk we need some animals/brutes in there so we don’t get bullied or bashed up in the guts,
  • big year of improvement for DGB. He has a strong character but lacks belief and hoping after two seasons he will find it,
  • I’ve included Ramma as CHF. I know it’s a massive call but no one is screaming out for the position so why not I say. With his traits will be a hard matchup and got very big hopes for this kid next year. His athletic traits are freakish for >200cm,
  • Have a look at the depth, impressive. We should be able to cover injuries that will undoubtedly happen during a season and the competition internally will drive everyone on the list to improve and give 110% effort.

As the season ended this year plus with some of the departures so many in the media are painting a picture of doom and gloom for us. We need to bottom out for a couple of years to get access to quality kids, they have a big hole in experience/leadership blah blah blah. Nah don’t buy it. I absolutely love the rapid list transition over the last two/three years (as we were s##t) while watching the development and improvement in a number of players. The rebuild is well on its way brothers and sisters and once the majority of this group get to 50-100 games LOOKOUT! I can see us pushing for finals in 24. One thing I would put my house on is that I bet Sam will be striving and doing everything possible to be pushing for finals next year and it’s brilliant that we have a coach with this mindset, it’s in his DNA. Feel a bit sorry for Mrs Mitchell as I don’t think Sam would sleep still for more than an hour 😀!
Good post. Love your optimism. Personally I think we'll make finals in 2025. But I doubt I'll be unhappy if we make finals in 2024.

We have the depth to push for finals next year imo, which goes against some of the doom and gloom from people being upset we traded away JOM and TOM

B - Hardwick, Blanck, Day
HB - Sicily, DGB, Scrimshaw
C - Amon, Worpel, Morrison
HF - Wingard, Frost, Moore
F - Breust, Lewis, Brockman
R - Meek, Newcombe, Stephens
INT - Reeves, Ward, CJ, Maginness

EMER - Impey, MacDonald, Butler, Bramble, Nash, Kosi

I think Worpel and Stephens deserves first opportunity, but if Worpel underwhelms like he has recently, I would replace him with Ward or MacDonald

I think Frost could move forward like he did late last season, because I think Kosi's spot last season could be up for grabs and possibly Jeka could earn an opportunity as well?

We have guys like Impey, MacDonald, Butler and Nash who could easily be in the starting 22, which means we have some good depth, plus our 1st round pick this year who might deserve a spot depending on his training form ect.

Overall I think the squad is looking strong and could surprise a few doomsayers I think, we could be in the 7th to 12th range? Potentially?

No one puts CJ on the bench...

Looking at that line up for where we are in rebuild there’s a lot to like. That said there are 2 glaring gaps IMO which are a power mid and a second tall forward. There is also the problem that our 2 class hff are closer to the end than the start. To that end my thoughts on options:
1. Tall forwards - We need Jeka to replace kosi by year end. Maybe need to add Lemmey with a late pick. Lawrence is speculative. If we finish similar to 2022 then maybe archer Reid with our f1.
2. Power mid: philippou / Humphrey this draft with pick 6. Finish low and trade up for Harley Reid 2023
3. Would love to see us get 2 of George, Jones or Konstanty this draft. If only 1 maybe magor/leary with a later pick. If not Harley super keen on the wizard Nick Watson, Duursma or tholstrup from the little I’ve seen for 2023

Hardwick Jeka DGB
CJ Sicily Day
Amon Jai McDonald
Moore Kosi Scrim
Breust Lewis Brock
Reeves Stephens Nash
I: Finn Ward Butler Meek chad (5th)

-Don’t think Blanck is a lock for FB - he really struggled on guys who jump at ball. Reckon Jeka is a better prospect. Not that positive on DGB but seems we’ll give him every chance (but also possible frost plays early). Jeka and DGB could complement each other - one has all the size and skills while the other has manic intensity.
-expect McDonald to pass Morrison on the wing. Already has the tank and is just a better user and decision maker
-Kosi will likely get first crack as 2nd tall. Needs a big season
-Wouldn’t be surprised if we throw some big bodies in around the contest to a) take load off Jai and b) create space for our running types. Nash is a Mitchell favourite and cooper might be given first crack over worpel.
-would prefer scrim up forward over green. Not convinced on Day as a mid (but we’ll keep trying it).
-there’s a potential nice ‘mosquito fleet’ of small forwards in Moore, Brockman, butler, chad, Breust - maybe too many in one side but may be our best path to score goals

Why exactly do we NEED Jeka to replace Kosi by the end of the year? I think we'd all be doing cartwheels if Jeka played enough footy to kick 20+ goals and that still wouldn't match Kosis best output at AFL level.

Because I think he has far greater upside especially getting up the ground, wheeling on either side and delivering inside 50. If he can replace kosi it hopefully means he will have had a good developing year and that missing tall forward piece is found. My opinion is Kosi would make a good third forward and relief ruck but it seems we are keen to play 2 rucks at least whilst ramsden develops who could be a fwd ruck. On that basis I can’t see both playing together and my personal preference is Jeka. I’m hoping with greater confidence by years end that he will make it if has the sort of year that elevates him over Kosi.

Good post. Jeka has all the tools to make it. He needs continuous game time.

With Gunston gone, he will hopefully get more of the footy directed his way. Remember how average Mitch Lewis was a couple seasons ago ? I'm hoping Jeka will improve likewise. If he does the benefits will be huge.

He doesn't get continuous game time on account of his apparent lack of desire, both in & following the contest. That's why he was moved to Defense, where his job is to contest the ball & beat his opponent, in the hope that he becomes comfortable with these traits & takes them back to CHF with him.

If he turns up with animal intent for the contest then he'll play the next 300 games straight.

Pretty sure Jeka is planned to train with the defenders all preseason. No idea if there’s any plans to move him forward (Ie Sicily was moved back and stayed back). Some guys are just better behind the ball as intercept marking is part of the role.

I think Sam will play the dual rucks with rotations thru the forward pocket to stretch opponents talls which will help Kozi and Mitch. Especially Kozi, if he contends with the third tall I am sure we will get a much improved output.

Jeka is such a natural forward, really hope he can put it together this year. Seemed to stagnate last year, but he is still only 21yo. Would hate for him to be thrown to the backline and waste the fwd talent as I see he and Lewis with huge potential as a marking mobile couple. I get the upside with his clean disposal out of the backline etc, but footage of him taking it out in front on F50 then wheeling around onto his right or left to find a target or slot one is poetry. He may never become what we hope but a little more time…?
He needs an extended run of games. Lewis has had many chances and he's come good mainly this year and a little last year.

The club needs to stop giving him a game here and there.

The benefit of having a fit and firing Jeka will change everything.

Jeka is not likely going to play forward in 2023, but still, Kosi needs a big year.

If he doesn’t take big steps forward he’ll be on the chopping block.

You reckon Jeka's biggest issue is a lack of opportunity/continuity at AFL level?

Potential midfield rotation for round one:

c: Stephens Ward Amon

r: Reeves Worpel Nuke

i/c: Long, Finn

mids on other lines: Wingard, CMac, Day, Scrim

Best 22 R1 - Young Guns Edition

Sammy gets the kids in with the frying pan and gets them cooking nice and early. Still keeping the experienced core and some good vets, but an emphasis on getting games into our next generation.

B. Hardwick, Blanck, DGB
HB. CJ, Sicily, Weddle
C. Day, Newcombe, Amon
HF. Wingard, Scrim, CMac1
F. Butler, Lewis, Moore
Foll. Reeves, CMac2, Ward
Int. Kozi, Bruest, Morrison, Meek, Finn
Emg. Stephens, Brockman, Jeka, Ramsden

Going to be hard to pick a team. Going for a young, fast and skilful side that is probably too short, but it would at least be entertaining.

Hardwick - Blanck - Weddle
Scrimshaw - DGB - Sicily

Meek - Newcombe - Ward
Amon - Maginess - Day

Moore - Lewis - Wingard
Breust - Reeves - Butler

CJ - MacDonald - Stephens - MacKenzie - Impey

Depth: Jeka - Worpel - Nash - Morrison - Frost - Lynch - Kosi - Serong - Brockman - Long - Morris - Ramsden - Bramble - Greene - Hustwaite
