There is no criteria, simply your opinion. You may think West Coast had the best draft of all time in 2001, simply because they got Chris Judd. Or you may think some club in 1999 had the best draft of all time because they got 4 really good contributing players out of it. Either way, in your opinion, which club has had the best draft and in what year?

For bonus point, which recent draft for a team will be one to watch out for.

For me, Geelong's 2001 draft is hard to top.

For the future, our 2006 draft will be one to remember.

Actually forgot about that.

Hawthorn of 2004 at the top of my list ahead of Geelong's 2001.

Pick 2- Jarryd Roughead.

Pick 5 -Lance Franklin. (this selection alone is the greatest of all time).

Then add another sweetener with pick 7- Jordan Lewis.

This is a tough one.

It's either 2001 batch
Hodge, mitchell, brown, rick ladson, simon cox, daniel elstone.
Rookie draft: Ben Kane,
A couple of duds but some champions as well. Captain, vice captain and all australian.

Or maybe the 2004 national draft
Roughead, franklin, Lewis, Thomas Murphy, little, simon taylor,
Rookie draft: Clinton Young,
What a draft for us the best big men duo in the league at the moment plus a ball magnet in lewis. Young was arguably best on ground up to half time in the grandfinal.

This is a tough one but with runs on the board you have to go with 2001 due to having our premiership captain and rising star Mitchell, our vice captain and Norm smith medalist Hodge. But the 2004 may over take them in the very near future. If not already!!

That does seem the best at the moment, I think they where the only team in the draft that ever had 3 top 10 Picks.

The hawks also got in 2004 draft where Thomas Murphy,Simon Taylor,Clinton Young. So that was a bloody fantastic draft.

Pies 2006 Draft is Looking Fantastic with Brown,Dawes,Dick,Goldsack,Clarke and Wellingham looks like they might have the Goods.

2008 Draft few teams could have great drafts

believe it or not we did ok in 2004
delideo
tambling
pattinson
mcguane
we lost on meyer but we now have thompson.
plus we got thursfield in the rookie draft.

so just because we didnt get franklin does not mean we did badly.

i wish we had francis jackson in 2004 very underated.......only mucked 1 pick JON. since than been fantastic.

^ Mate no offence but I don't think getting 1 and a half good players constitutes anything near the best ever draft. My nominations are

Geelong 2001:
Ablett, Bartel, Steve Johnson, Kelly, and a handful of assorted duds

St Kilda 2001:
Dal Santo, Ball, Montagna, Maguire, X. Clarke and some dud rookies

Bulldogs 1999:
Murphy, Gilbee, Hahn, Hargrave, Giansiracusa and a couple of duds

St Kilda's WAS a great draft but has not lived up to expectations.

Maguire, Clarke and Ball all struggle to stay on the park, despite Ball's solid 2008 season, he is a shadow of himself.

Bulldogs actually did do quite well in 1999 but Hawthorn's trio of Roughead, Franklin and Lewis equally as exciting and impressive as Ablett, Bartel and SJ.

the mere fact you picked tambling ahead of franklin indicates your picks were not the best.

what does constitutes a great draft is it a premiership somewhere down the track or how many games each played. I agree with geelong but the others I am not sure about. Yes, some really good players but i think our 2004 and 2001 are better.

2 All-Australians and a couple of potential ones, 5 100+ game players, several top 5 B+F finishes, how many other drafts can claim that? I'm not saying it's the best, in fact it's clearly not at the moment, but it was still very good.

Hawthorn's 01/04 were very good as well, but those were just 3 worth mentioning I thought hadn't been brought up yet (missed the posts that already had Geelong's). If I had to pick one draft as the very best I would probably say Geelong 01 just.

He said Essendons 2006 draft would be one to watch out for, not the best.

I think we have every right to be excited about what Jetta, Houli, Davey and Riemers have shown to this point.

If you disagree then you dont watch much footy.

i think you will find he just isn't an essendon supporter....

Hawks draft of Roughead, Franklin and Lewis is definatley up there. IIRC they where all picked with in the top 7  you would expect some quality from those picks though!

I think it would have to be Geelong 2001

I think Ablett will eventually win a brownlow. To get two brownlow medallists from the one draft would be unheard of.
