Darryn Cresswell had a bit of a problem with gambling back in the day.
When Matthew Armstrong was sacked as coach of the old Tassie Devils VFL side, Cresswell's name kept popping up as a candidate for the coaching job.
Quite a few people in footy circles in Tasmania were aware of Cresswell's problems and tried to tell AFL Tasmania not to sign him.
So AFL Tasmania did the opposite and signed him as coach.
Not long after that he borrowed $100,000 out of one of his assistant coaches and when asked for it back, he took off with the woman that was head of Basketball Tasmania, who happened to share offices with AFL Tasmania in the stand at North Hobart, to England and stayed away for some time (not sure if he's ever set foot back in Hobart since then).
Subsequently he was sacked as Devils coach and now Carlton coach Brendon Bolton was installed as coach.

In the late 1970s the great Peter Hudson was licencee of the Granada Tavern in Berriedale, Tas, north of Hobart.
He was known as a quiet, unassuming fellow.
One night he kicked a patron out and then proceded to follow said patron outside and kick the snot out of every single panel of this guy's car and give him one or two for good measure before walking back inside.

That was the then Tassie Mariners coach, Andrew Mellor, that Cresswell borrowed $100k off before doing the bolt.
There was a lot of rumours circulating around Hobart at the time that he also owed a lot of money to several very shady people in the Hobart area too who all wanted him dead.
There was a player revolt over Cresswell's coaching at the Devils, he was erratic as hell and coaching terribly and had a very poor win-loss ratio of something in the region of 5-25 and he chucked it in and bunged off to England with that Pommy bird from the basketball.
Think he ended up marrying her. Don't think Mellor got his money back either.
That was at the height of AFL Tasmania, and Scott Wade's disgraceful incompetence in running football in Tasmania, two decades of these village idiots running the sport is why there will never be a Tasmanian AFL team. Fact.

Was at a sportsman's night a few weeks back and was talking to Jeff Thomson, former Australian fast bowler from the 70s and 80s.
Was pretty clear that he cannot stand Kerry O'Keefe! Apparently most of the established players in the Australian team back then didn't have a great deal of time for him either. Was seen as aloof, wouldn't drink with the players and never fitted into the team culture of the time.
Also "Thommo" is most certainly not a big fan of Cricket Australia either. Used some pretty choice words to describe them and their running of the game.

I knew he had a bit of a temper on him. He coached Hobart back in 1986-1987 in the TFL and in 1986 we were in our last year of a four year stint playing home games at KGV (Glenorchy).
Hobart were sponsored by Country Kitchens Bakery back then and they would supply a large truck with the company logo on the side of the containter, parked up against the fence behind the bench where he and his coaching staff used to sit.
Some days his voice could be heard two suburbs away when Hobart were playing poorly, Mark Browning and Paul Sproule were pretty much like that too. Sounded like Barassi!

Who lends someone 100k? Let alone someone with known gambling issues?

You guys sound like Tassie locals.

Got any stories about Dr Harry Cooper being prominent in the Hobart swinging scene with his wife in the late 90's and early 2000's?

I can tell you Dr Harry is a prick and kids were warned not go anywhere near his property or Old Man Harry would go berserk at them, their parents, their grandparents, their relatives, their neighbours, their co-workers, and their dogs. Forget the jolly old fellow you see on TV, the man is a grumpy old prick.

Doesn't surprise me. An ex of mine said that in the early 2000's it was common to see Dr Harry in the Hobart clubs approaching barely legal girls asking them to come back to his place.

Wasn't a paedophile, just loved having sex

No never heard that one. I think Harry Cooper was from up the north west somewhere.
I didn't even know we had a swingers scene down this way lol!
I've heard stories that he was a bit of a nasty old prick somewhere before though yes.

Kerry O'keefe pretty much admits this in one of his books. Says its his greatest regret from his playing days that he never built positive relationships with team mates and he is doing his best now to make ammends

I remember the time Simon Madden started wearing Blades boots.
There had been some angst that season because Simon had to tape over the Blades logo and paint on three adidas stripes onto his boots.
Essendon at the time were sponsored by adidas, of whom Ted was the Sales Manager.
When Simon broke the games record at Essendon he was given a night to honour the event.
Ted Whitten gave Simon the highest award adidas give in Soccer, the Golden Boot.
This was a big thing to Ted, but apparently Simon didn't know much about it and basically dismissed it, saying something like it was the first time someone had ever given him a golden boot. Ted wasn't very happy with the apparent disrespect.
Bill Duckworth then yelled out "you should get him a decent pair of boots".
Not knowing who it was, Ted then wanted to find who had yelled out.
He was in his mid to late 50s by this point, and had well and truly been taking advantage of the all you can drink invitation.
However, he was working his way through the crowd, pointing fingers at people asking if they'd yelled it out, and challenging them to a fight.
Lou Richards eventually calmed him down and dragged him back to the table of honour at the front.
While Simon was still making his speech, all you could hear was Ted picking fights with sponsors, and with current and ex-players.
Ted Legend

Former Brisbane Bears player Danny Noonan was jailed for six and a half years in 2017 for 107 counts of stealing $2.5m from his clients in his job as a financial adviser in Hobart over nearly a decade at AMP Financial to feed his gambling addiction.
Noonan played 55 games for the Bears from 1991-93 and returned to TFL club Clarence and went onto win two William Leitch Medals in 1995 and 1996, which were controversial for the fact that he was caught on camera kinghitting his North Launceston opponent behind play during the 1995 TFL Grand Final.

Similar thing happened when Cresswell coached Palm Beach in QLD - players revolted and had him sacked because he spent training sessions sitting in front of the pokies at Palm Beach’s homeground instead of actually coaching. Got the axe halfway through the season.
