Best midfield ever?

bloody hell, knew I was going to forget someone. Then you think about it, Justin Leppitsch iirc, ran through the midfield at times, Jono Brown had a go at times. Then the Scott twins as well.
Des Headland top 5 Brownlow one year.
Copeland great tagger.

If you think Cooney was fit to tie GAJ's bootlaces, even the year he won the Brownlow, you have no idea.

Cooney was a very good player for a while but the fact he beat Ablett to a Brownlow was testament to the strength of the Geelong midfield that year, not its weakness.

I could forgive that if it was a one off. But it wasn’t. I’m not giving shit I’m saying what happened. He also lost to Cotchin (who also beat him in the coaches award), Mitchell and Jobe Watson in the same year. I know he was injured but he also lost to Priddis.

So he got beat by 4 out of 5 of worst Brownlow medalists of all time at his peak. And when you look at the votes 09 Brownlow (because it’s the Geelong one) with 28 votes it isn’t enough to win a Brownlow is todays game.

So to get back to the point. GAJ might be better than some of the Eagles/Lions midfielders if you take into account his longevity which I totally get btw. But if you want a team on the day playing their best Eagles/Lions mids are on another level imo.

Black and Voss (if the NS was voted properly instead of at 3qtr time) are NS medalists. So 3 Brownlows and 2 essential NS medalists is a lot better than what the Geelong mids produced.

This was a weak effort even by your standards.

Have they stopped feeding you at the asylum?

If it was that bad you wouldn’t bother to reply.

It’s annoyed you because it’s true. I’ve stated what happened in history. That is all I’ve done no bagging/shitfighting whatsoever.

If something I’ve said is incorrect let me know.

This is an odd concept. I reply to things I consider bad all the time.

You do a lot of projecting with the "you're annoyed, you're triggered, you only respond if you know I'm right" routine. This is playground stuff. Forums live off idiots giving terrible opinions and others correcting them.

Even a bunch of others who are very keen on the Dusty > Ablett narrative have never gone with the whole "Cooney, Cotchin etc were better" argument. Everyone knows it's silly. Geelong had a super stacked midfield stealing votes in 2007/2008, then Gold Coast were a historically poor team that it was ridiculously hard to get any votes in 2011/2012. When the latter started coming good in 2013-2014 to become a mediocre side rather than a god awful one, Ablett was leading both Brownlow counts when he was on the field. Like someone else said on here the other day, the betting favourites for the Brownlow from bookies making odds (using the form lines all season) are a better guide than who actually wins it. Ablett was favourite about 5 times and very close the other 3.

And the 5 League MVPs, then 3 Coaches Association awards 2007-2009 all back this up anyway. For the 2007-2014 period as a whole, Ablett was the best player in the league. And for the Geelong era, he had a stack of able deputies. One of the deepest midfields since Hawthorn's in the 80s. Ottens, Ablett, Bartel, Corey, Selwood, Ling, Kelly and Enright (2007-2008 especially) - while also getting about 30% game time in midfield from Johnson and Chapman.

Voss, Aker, Black

Cox, Cousins, Judd

If you can’t see with your own eyeballs that as a combo they are leagues better than

Ablett, Bartel and Ottens then I can’t help you.

Bartel and Ottens are the bottom 2 players of the 9 I just mentioned by a mile.

But yes I guess you have Ling to make up for it whatever that means.

And again stop mentioning awards that he didn’t win at Geelong. Why do you keep doing that? It’s not part of the midfields we are discussing.

Fact is Lions mids had 3 Brownlow medalist during the 3 peat years with essentially 2 NS to go with it. Geelong mids had 2 Brownlow medalists and 1 NS.

For the Eagles, Cousins, Judd and Cox were better than anybody from your midfield and arguably better than GAJ at his peak. Discussion over as far as I’m concerned. I don’t think Ottens could win tap out.

Like in 2008 when the two sides met and Cox got 19 hit outs from 85 per cent game time and Ottens got 18 from 56 per cent game time. He smashed him that day. Smashed the great Mark Blake too with 17 from 51 per cent game time. No im sure he couldn’t win the taps.
Or the same year when Ottens won them 29-15. Again from significantly less game time. Hell he even almost did him for touches that day

Those bottom 5 are terrible.
Yeah only the 16 premierships between those five plodders. Throw in the GOAT midfielder in G. Ablett Jnr (the reason why you're so worked up in this thread) and you've got one heck of a powerhouse midfield!

Not sure if you realise but 2008 isn’t between 2004-2006.

And your mids lost to the Hawks that year in the GF. Thanks again for proving my point. Geelongs mids just aren’t up to it sorry. All evidence is against you. Imagine what those mids would do to you when you couldn’t even contain Dew.

I've always said Brisbane, and it's not fair to judge them on one performance, but...

I'm rewatching the 2004 GF, and far out Port absolutely ruined the famed Lions midfield early. Made them look second rate.

(Blame St Kilda's performance tonight for sending me down the nostalgia rabbit hole)

At times like this is important to remind ourselves that Cleansweep17 not only didn't witness that Geelong midfield in action, he also wasn't around when Brisbane or West Coast's midfield group was rolling.

A bit like us desperately trying to convince someone that Team A's midfield from the 70s was better than Team B's from the 60s.

Guess work, which is only informed from a pre existing bias. He did say he was going to watch a Geelong replay on YouTube one time before welching on it, though.
