Cox has been the best H&A ruckman.

The slight on him that Jolly & Ottens have performed at a superior level when it counts most.
Uh...What?

I've only seen really 4 dominant ruckmen in the game

Cox
Sandilands
Lade
Primus

Guys like Jolly/King/Everitt/Ottens/White have been great players but none have caused rule changes or just dominated AA selections year after year

Oh no doubt. In terms of actual ruck work though whilst he has been at an a-grade level for so long I don't think he is up there with the real top tap men.
He hasn't been elite as some guys but he's not far off

Plus he offered so much more around the ground then anyone else above 194cm in the midfield ever has.

I disagree. Not as much anymore in the centre square, but he is still one of very good around the ground.

But at his best he was rarely if ever beaten (except by Sandi).

List below includes every All Australian ruckman named since 2000, including resting rucks (fwd) and interchange.List is arranged by average hitouts.

That's ok I'll take the 3 flags Ottens helped deliver

Of course I'm not biased at all;)

Cox a clear leader.

Sandi, Lade and Primus next - all great players who have had their share of injuries in their prime.

Brad Ottens, Peter Everitt and Jeff White after that.

Then Darren Jolly probably leads off a group of above average ruckman like Stephen King and Ben Hudson.

Michael Gardiner is one who hasn't rated much of a mention - injuries and off field issues derailed his career but his best footy in the ruck circa 2003 was excellent. Shame it didn't last.

D Cox
A Sandilands
J White

To me Jeff White offered almost everything u could want from a ruck...hardly missed games too which was a massive advantage. Bit of an underrated great of the last 20yrs.

Then guys like Lade, Primus, Jolly, Gardiner, Ottens, Everitt

Everitt would've ranked higher if included maybe about 5 seasons before 2000. Never much of a fan of Luke Darcy's work.

He could win a game off his own boot before he did his knee - after was never the same

Could only play behind the ball - not in front of it - too stupid IMHO - a player would mark and turn around to go back to take a kick and gardener would lead when the other player had his back to him and couldn't see the lead - which was a good lead where he had several meters on his opponent and would have taken an uncontested mark - except the kicker didn't see the lead

I used to scream at the tv as he did that time and time again 05 granny aaaarrgh. Dumb dumb bloke.

Can someone post the stats on contested marks for some of the leading rucks through the 2000's. I rate my ruck men not only on hitouts (to advantage) and their positional play but also on their ability to take a grab.

Would be great if you could include Primus in the list as I rated him highly.

Gardiners peak in 2003 until his knee injury was a higher peak than Cox imo. Unfortunately Gardy never really came back after the knee. The fact he still made the AA team on little more than half a season's worth of work (he was largely ineffective on his return) was testament to how much he was destroying ruckmen week in week out. The game v St Kilda early in the season is still etched in my mind as a brutal dominance. Granted, his opposite number wasn't crash hot (Cain Ackland i think, maybe Trent Knobel?)

But obviously Cox's career far outshadows Gardy. He emerged as a really good player in 2004, and was an AA by 2005. That's 9, possibly even 10 seasons as one of the standout ruckmen of the competition. Phenomenal really when you consider how injury prone a lot of ruckmen tend to be.

# 1 Cox

I honestly do not believe Sandi should be up there. Hear me out.....hear me out.
For a ruckman that came into the league with a lot of potential, has he really lived up to it. I don't think so. We are talking about a position/player that can win a game in short amount of time off their own back. Over the years their has been plenty of ruckman that are better than Sandi.
Is everybody's giving their answer based on tap's alone ? Is it game influence ? Goals ? Premierships ?
