So grab the crystal ball while we play out the remaining 4 games of 2024. Assuming 5-6 players are rolled off our list with retirements (eg, Shiels) and delistings and those who don’t re-sign. Who will be lining up in game 1 next year in 2025? A couple of other assumptions here.

• The likes of Goater and CCJ have recovered from their long term injuries and are available to be picked.
• We land a quality top 3 who walks straight into the side. A round 2 pick might be a bridge too far to be picked.
• We do a deal with at least 1 player in the 24 - 28 year bracket. Have a crack at who you would like that to be, but be somewhat realistic. ie, were not getting Lachlie Neale

CCJ also had a brain replacement while having his Achilles repaired. I heard it was a success. LMac is co-captain for 2024, but if we are to turn this ship around, he won’t be captain in 2025. Prefer to have Sheezel and Wardlaw take over the mantle next year.

I guess it's a good sign for our depth now that I'm not sure pick 2 or Duursma walk into this side. I think Parker needs to play mostly in the middle for at least a year to set up our stoppage structures, but that throws up a conundrum of where to play Wardlaw, Powell, Simpkin in the meantime. I think Wardlaw needs to start on the ground but where I don't know.

I would like Comben forward as well. Still torn on where to play him with Darling coming in. Also not sure who chops X out.

Duursma is still building his tank, so I have left him out for now. The club wants chom forward and W Dawson at chb, so I left them there. I left Tucker in as the wing/hb utility, but I would prefer more small forward coverage. Powell could be that utility player too. Bit of a small forward raffle with Hansen and co, but we clearly need 1-2 pure small forwards in that line up. In reality, we all know L Mac is going to be picked before goater.

Fisher is a really poor tackler, and amazingly, has been replaced after 12 months in the role we recruited him for.

That side has to win at least eight games next year.

If not, there is something fundamentally wrong with the club at all levels.

If he is in it, it means one of two things:

• our youth has genuinely been unable to supplant him and the club recognise this.
• for the first time in years he is actually not underdone and the club has put an end to playing underdone players

Either way, the team is stronger. I personally can’t wait to see the day when we have other defensive options to choose from, but the reality is that when he isn’t touching the ball and is just playing the man, he is decent.
