Are we the only team that does the “outside 5” on every single opposition free kick / mark?

Against a team that took 140 marks and got 14 frees, we’re conceding 770m for the game (in theory, it’s obviously going to be a bit less). How is this a solid strategy and isn’t it obviously flawed if we’re seemingly the only team regularly doing it?

Exactly. I always thought the purpose of footy was to not concede any ground and to defend with your life. We do exactly the opposite. We concede ground at will and even when we have it we still concede ground a lot of the time. Brainless.

It’s hilarious, Freo waltzed out of their D50 all game with 15-20m chip kicks. Hayden Young, one of the best kicks in the comp must have been laughing.

You would have to question his football judgment.

Cordy has been a substandard defender for at least the past 4 seasons- yet he still plays as our main defender. Who else in the football world thinks this is not stupidity.

His handling of guys like Young, Trengove and Roughead shows poor judgment imo as well. These guys could have been useful key defenders yet he chased them out of the club.

Then there is his continual complaining that we lose despite winning the inside 50 count. Really- does he still have no idea why this happens over the past 5 years?

Then there is the ruck disaster we have been experiencing since 2016. He has developed 100% reliance on one young ruckman who is useful around the ground but substandard in the centre square.

He really needs a strong assistant- someone who call out poor decisions and provide some clarity for the players.
Young is a very interesting one. I think he was very poorly developed. You'll remember that he played a few games in the forward line and he performed very well. However, the next week he was sent back and the week after his was in the two's. He was prone to brain fades, didn't have much of a second effort, and he dropped his head a lot.
I've wondered if he could have played permanently forward and had Naughton take his place as a key defender. This would have put some balance into the team structure, something we don't have today.

Buku is a defender, then promoted to seniors as a fwd on the back of 2 vfl games up front, then asked to play ruck relief, dropped and then comes back in as a defender. Then dropped again after 2 good games, 1 so so game. It’s Young all over again….

Rohan Smith was on radio Friday morning, in a conversation around Sam Darcy how it’s great to have flexibility in all your players, playing multiple positions is a strength etc etc. This coaching group needs to get a grip on reality and stop believing in magic dust.

There would have to nearly be 20 50m penalties given away this season from trying to move out when being told to stand.

In a team with a terrible backline we should be doing everything to slow their ball movement, not make it as fast and easy as possible for them

our defenders arent protecting the corridor enough, they get dragged wide chasing opponents and/or too many of them get drawn to the loose ball, freo had an outnumber 15m out directly in front multiple times, unforgiveable, such a poorly coached team

Oh man how exciting would a fresh start be, a new coach & coaching panel, clear some deadwood and bring in a few targeted players - then hit preseason with this list still in shape and start again. Absolutely praying that’s this year 🙏 it won’t be though

That would require an executive and football department with courage. What we have are Bevo sycophants and those who think we have to keep him for life because of 2016 even though him and his coaching group are running the list into the ground.

If we had courage, we would lay it down to Bevo and say either change or you're gone. We would approach Clarko and say if you want it, it's yours. But, what we have are leaders that won't make tough decisions. Won't do what needs to be done. Will let this list slip by.

i know it won't happen either, but Clarkson is right there. Even if he wanted to live in Sydney the GWS salary cap appears to be completely screwed, and while I don;t think North's list is the wasteland some others think it is light years behind ours. Senior assistant for a year while he decides what he wants to do? I don't know is that's even viable but hopefully internally there are questions being asked about how to freshen up our approach.

I don't expect substantive change in the footy department and coaching panel, and we'll have another year in the doldrums next year. There does not appear to be any clarity of thinking when it comes to gameplan - it's midfield/territory dominance and talent getting us over the line or nothing.

I'm with you, I think a clearout is required but it'll be 2024 before anything like that happens - if it ever does.

The thing is we’ll finish 5th or 6th next year, we’ll have the easy draw and we know we beat up on shit teams and look a million bucks. We’ll finish 5th/6th with enough wins against the bottom and a healthy percentage - possibly win a final or two because our individual stars stand up. And Bev will sign a 3 year contract.

We have never and will never have sustained successful periods under this coaching

When bevo began his tenure with us, he was able to couple great tactics with an awesome emotional coaching style which strongly motivated the playing group.

As the years have gone on however, the increased rule changes which limit match day tactics (no third man up, 666, stand rule) have limited his tactical nous. This has been coupled with a coaching exodus which has been particularly pronounced this season. This has really limited his tactical strength as a coach.

As for Bevo’s other great strength - his capacity to motivate. There is only so far this can take us as a team. His ability to catch fire in a bottle for the 16 and 21 finals series seems to leave the player group drained. It’s that us vs the world mentality that can work wonders but actually hamstring the club afterwards. This coupled with a lack of tactical structure is really hurting us. You can see it in Bevo’s consistent pre-season comments about us ‘working out what we are as a side” and “beginning a journey”. There’s no sense of clear structure or goal. It’s really disparate until we get a stirring win and bevo tries to capitalise on that to build momentum.

Compare it to a methodical structured coaching style (ie the cats).
The cats are an experienced, well drilled side with a structure that are largely unemotional as a team. They don’t invest in their journey as a club in the same way the dogs do, they just trust their system and how they perform as a team.

You can’t rely on motivating a team alone, it’s too flaky - especially when it’s not coupled with any sound tactics or team structure.

Next year, I’d like to see us completely restructure the coaching group to provide greater tactical insight and surety to the playing group. I’d also like the board to hold off re-signing bevo until the end of next season and only re-sign him if we make too 4.

OK, this is very left field but is there any possibility that Beveridge could fall on his sword at season's end? He may be coming to the view that he has taken this group as far as he can and that now it deserves a fresh direction. I admit it is highly unlikely but these thoughts must be starting to take shape in his psyche right now.

Only way that would happen is if there was a mass exodus of players wanting out similar to the end of 2014

Pretty sure Bevo mentioned them taking too many uncontested marks in the presser. Which would be on the coaches would it not?

If only there was a way we could stop them taking so many uncontested marks.

Oh I know, how about we actually create a contest and maybe lay a tackle? Maybe stop retreating? Yeah, that'll do it. Seriously, it makes my head hurt.

It could be structure or it could be the players not working hard/not fit enough.

It was mentioned that we ran a collective 7KMs less than the Fremantle players - which does suggest a work rate/fitness issue.

I wonder who will be available at the end of next year. Will all the good coaches be taken?

As long as the new assistant coaches are willing to take the Sri Lankan Rupee as payment (that’s all the club can afford due to Bevos high wage as head coach and the new soft cap rules ) ) all should be fine
