Jason Sangha is another Jake Doran, unfortunately
That end of season burst from 21/22 feels like a long way away now, unfortunately.

Sangha looks every bit the goods, but at some point looking good needs to turn into runs.

The sheer volume of batsmen in the Sheffield Shield who are either not talented enough or underperforming (in quite a few cases, both) is just a bit depressing really. There would be well over a dozen batsmen floating around the FC ranks now who are getting 20, 30 or even 40 games for their state that in just about any other era would have been lucky to have played 5 games. In the golden era, they wouldn't have even been getting a contract, let alone a game but admittedly it always feels a little pointless trying to compare to that era because it's almost certainly never going to happen again.

About a year ago I was starting to full a bit bullish about our batting stocks but must admit less so now with the stalled development of a few players (Sangha one of them) and Puc's seemingly never-ending battle with concussion.

Hypothetically Wade gets a small knock and we need a backup keeper, who takes the gloves?

Can Warner or Finch keep?
Warner's definitely filled in before so surely him. Finch isn't mobile enough these days.

Although I assume if they gave Cam Green the gloves it'd turn out he's a natural.

Henriques stranded on 99 not out lmao

Did his job though (as did Tremain soaking up 68 deliveries). Left QLD with a target of 26 but there wasn’t enough light for them to chase it down.

Not sure what Joe Burns was doing scoring 3 off 8 deliveries when they needed runs very quickly.

One thing worth pointing out is that batting averages against seamers have really dropped in the past few years, for reasons which aren’t totally clear (changes to the ball? Advances in swing bowling? Changes to how the pitches are managed? Batsmen not as good at defending because of the focus on T20?) Several years ago a bat-only player had to be averaging well into the 40s to get consideration for international duty. The bar has definitely dropped in that respect. The days of a Hussey or a Voges piling up huge runs at an average of 45 or 50 in first class cricket and having to toil for many years to get a crack for their country seem to be over. If you score runs in domestic cricket you’ll get a shot in tests.

Worth mentioning that Renshaw, who’s been in the wilderness but still has a lot of talent and is no means over the hill, had 200* for QLD in their draw with NSW.
