Playing Marsh and Green is the right call. The forecast is for rain to be around most of the time, but not excessive. Cool and cloudy in Manchester is usual. The wicket will seam the whole time so I expect a low scoring match. Batting won’t be easy so an extra pace bowling all rounder makes sense.

Spinners seem to be useless in England - hence Ali over another batter was a dumb move by the ranga
They're generally not though. Lyon has a good record there and don't get me started on Warne in '05, oof.

I don't mind the Ali gamble because it fits their BazBall approach. Whether or not is has/will come off is another thing entirely.

Root is probably just as good a bowler as him now though which is the issue I suppose.

Though I also feel Ali has bowled well at times without luck during the series, plus we've played him well.

Not always. Warne took 40 wickets in 2005.

Yeah but Warnie is the 🐐.

Plus I reckon he got a heap of those wickets that series LBW with that slider out the front of the hand that didn’t turn at all.

Out of interest, here are the spin bowling records in England.

From what I’ve read it seems like English pitches have been made to be a lot less spin friendly in recent times.

Also Lyon and Warne are a bit different to the norm.

Loved Moeen in the past but he’s just a walking wicket now - bizarre to put him up at 3. Miles worse than leaving Warner in the side

I agree about Ali. I think the mates club in English selections is to their detriment. Bairstow is a very ordinary keeper and is only picked because of Stokes wants him there. They should have omitted Ali, put Foakes back, and maybe had Bairstow bat 6.

Look forward to Ali out for 5, Bairstow dropping an easy catch early and then being under ridiculous amounts of pressure for the remainder of the test match.

That was Trescothick I think
Trescothick had a legit clinical issue. The jury was out on Trott though. I think it was Vaughan at the time who questioned it, saying something to the effect that there is a difference between actual mental health problems and just being a little down due to poor form.

Gotcha. Seems like several English batters have had similar issues
