I’d suggest our pay scale and having to fit into it has more of an impact than any premiership window, as well as managers knowing what clubs will be able to move for players come trade time.

Hawthorn went into trade period without a first rounder which immediately meant that trades for big names wouldn’t be easy, and thankfully we weren’t willing to trade next years picks.

Trade currency wouldn't have effected Fyfe Motlop Rockliff Tengrove etc. I wouldn't underestimate the draw of success on the decision making of players moving clubs (especially free agents who haven't won a flag yet). In fact Motlop and Rockcliff both cited that as the main reason they wanted to join Port (I doubt its to go and live in Adelaide). Good on them and fair play as every club if managed properly is going to get it's time in the sunshine when they're considered a destination club but i think in general supporters assume that players will just naturally want to come to your club because of it s culture or medical facilities or whatever else. Whereas I think the 2 biggest criteria by a long way are cash and premiership success.

I think we are all underestimating the significance of a player nominating you during the trade period. Every player this year that nominated his club got there and more often than not the trading club took unders. I don’t feel like any of the “big fish” like Rockcliff Stringer Schache Motlop entertained coming to us which means that no matter what sort of gymnastics we tried to pull we were never going to land them. I guess that’s the breaks of not being in the premiership window. Saints Pies West Coast and North seem to be facing the same problems. This has to be taken into account when being critical of the trade period and asking “why didn’t we get X player?”.

When you see players like Stringer, Schache and Motlop referred to as "Big Fish", I'm glad we folded our hand early and waited for the next deal.

Looking at the trades results, I see some very ordinary players change jumpers, that's it. Stringer will still be Stringer, Schache isn't going to tear the competition apart and Motlop will still play proctologist on a consistently inconsistent basis. None of these moves today will affect Hawthorn's 2018 one bit. We already have our Big Fish returning from injury.

Of course it would, because we wouldn’t have been able to go after more than 1 of them with a salary and length that was not going to be matched or bettered by another club.

I might be in the minority but I would gladly have have had Motlop and/or Rockcliff as free agents at whatever Port is paying them (I don't think either of them are on crazy money). And I would gladly have given up the equivalent of picks 25 and 30 for Stringer or 25 and 40 for Schache. I really don't think that money or trade currency was the determining factor for us not being in play for any of those players.

It seems we were trying to lower the age profile of the list to get more players in the 22-24 age range to develop together. Mitchell, O'meara, Burton, Sicily, O'rourke, impy, Hardwick, Lovell etc... Will be the core if our side going forward with younger guns added in next year's draft.

By bringing in Mitchell, O'meara and Impy we can hopefully avoid bottoming out with 2 spoons to get stars in the draft as we already have them and they can perform now. Just need to build up the midfield depth and key forwards.

Yet Gold Coast get a second round pick for Ablett and Hawthorn get pick 75 for Hodge despite the fact that he came third in the b&f and signed a two year deal for a heap of cash.
Oh that’s right, Hawthorn also got the “nice guy” award for the second year in a row for letting club champions leave the club for sweet FA. That’s nice.

Ablett was contracted for next year, Hodge wasn't and Brisbane had pick one in the PSD just how exactly do you think the club could have got more for him than what they did?

Logic doesn't work with Realist - gets in the way of him only coming here to spit bile about our club.

Yeah but I wanted an answer to laugh at

The Freo negotiating team deserves a pay rise, get a contracted Brad Hill for pick 23 and receive Pick 2 for Weller 12 months later...

That club is a joke but they have cleaned up the last few years.. Carlton and Essendon also, both have done extremely well.

We did get Tom, I think if Freo ripped us for Hill, what do you call the job we've done on the Swines? Probably our best recruiting decision since the Silk pick up (or maybe Brian?)

A lot of teams have overspent this year because of the big increase in the tpp, whether on retaining players or bringing in new ones. The thing is, out of contract payers are going want similar money down the line and players are going to be shaken loose.

Just like happened at the Swans when they got Buddy and Tippett and Tom fell out the bottom into our waiting hands.
