Disappointing trade period. Thought we would go hard on a quality midfielder like rocky or gibbs to help t mitchell. Could have been the difference between finals next year. We got trounced in the midfield last year. Are we no longer a destination club?

Probably can pick up a lewis type in 2018 draft. this year all listed players get a go (as last year)

Port and Dons nailed it. Cats get the master back. We loose Hodgey and get pick 75 and get impey and loose 32. Anybody know our draft picks left. I would have liked wrighty to at least move us up the order to first round. Trade izzy, breust, frawley, stratton or birchall. As they wont be around for the next flag tilt. If we were going to get something decent for puopolo or billy it was now.

- Getting anything for Hodge was a bonus. He was finished last year
- impey, if he can learn to actually find the ball might turn out ok. Pick 32 in a weak draft was worth the risk
- Izzy and Breust will still get another crack at a flag. I agree about the others.
- Poppy, whilst been a great servant is just about cooked as well. At best could have got a third rounder. Not worth it.
- If Lang went for a fourth rounder, Hartung would be worth a 6th rounder. Lang is the semi final last season, showed more than Hartung has in his 50 games.

Trade some of our best players (who are all under 30) for a pick upgrade in a weak draft?!

Obviously we tried to get something for Puop and Hartung, but didn't.

Is there any substance to this or is it just an empty rant?

These internal melts are frustrating because they'll be the first people getting around the banter if we perform well next year.
It's ok to be disappointed sometimes. Just saw a few opportunities to improve, we have a lot of holes in our list and it seems like we did nothing to try and fill them. We'd wanna have a key forward lined up sometime in the near future cause rough has max 2 years left in him and obrien still hasn't shown enough to make me think he can be the number one man

Get into the first round where clubs were throwing their first round picks away for players like Charlie Cameron? Better send your resume into Hawthorn - hawthorn@hawthornfc.com.au. Obviously Wrighty has no clue - you're our only hope.

Disagree that Poppy is cooked
Strongly

I’m sure we could have snagged any of the players that were up for grabs this year if a) we wanted them b) could afford them and c) had some currency to trade for them.

Also helps if players nominate your club.

This isn't going to be a popular opinion but people need to remember that tides shift fast in this game and the guys who are making decisions on their playing future were teenagers a few years ago.

How many players nominated any of the clubs you could call contenders from about 2012-2016, or at the least with the age profile of the contenders; Hawks, Sydney, Geelong, WCE, North, Crows....

Gibbs aside (and Ablett doesn't count) there was none..

Yep... massive list holes... to challenge again, still need two key forwards. Roughy still the best forward is laughable. The lack of strong development in O'Brien and Shoenmakers has been very costly. Burton needs to play midfield because of his elite skills. There is literally no one coming through that can play key forward. Still need 2 x gun inside and 1 x gun outside mid. Tom Mitchell's shoulders and back are going to be extremely sore by the end of 2018. Hopefully JOM can stay fit and play a full season, but even when fit, this team still has a bottom 4 midfield in the AFL. Another key defender is also required. Frawley is a #1 with strong support, as seen when Lake was playing. Kaiden Brand is never going to be like Lake. He is a #3 back at best.

How the **** does this work?
Because we weren't active in trade period?
How the **** does trading in players that barely get a game at other clubs suddenly going to make us top 3?
**** I'm over this crap
Trading for the sake of trading is just meaningless yet we have supporters who want us to do just that

You should have stopped reading when you saw the reference to "this year".

Nuffies on AFL Pages.

They only nominate you if you woo them and offer a deal. With nothing to trade then it sounds like we didn’t woo all these players.

Not sure what everyones thoughts are. But it feels we didnt aim to improve our list. Schache for 25 and 40 and jake stringer is better trade than impey. Theres no guarantee tom lynch is going to hawthorn next year especially if were going to finish bottom 5.

Come on dude - Richmond just won a flag with a far weaker forward line than what we can put on the park now.

In your opinion.

Not sure that Clarko and co agree, especially for what we may have had to give up.

Yeah, and Geelong should have gotten rid of Stevie J after 2006.

Heatherly plays a different role and Hartung is younger and less injury prone than JOR. We won't delist him.
So Stevie didn't have currency, they hadn't seen his potential, didn't register as an asset?
How is that relevant to Billy?

Of course the other 2 are totally different. They want to be there. Both Offer something, yes different from Bil. JOR clearly has much more upside and is worth persisting with, even though I don't think he will make due to his body. Hes still a better bet than chicken little.

Jesus ****ing Christ
I don't even know how to respond to you now

In years gone by, GW would always pull a rabbit out of his hat at the 11th hour.

Something special.

This year we were all waiting for it to happen, and some of us are disillusioned that it didn't happen.

Bottom line... we had nothing to offer without giving up at least a best 10 player or next years picks.

So, we wait... consolidate... get games into youngsters... hone the game plan... save some cash... and look ahead to next years draft period.

I think the management has decided we set ourselves up for the super draft instead. Getting the next luke hodge or roughy. T mitchell omeara and burton will still be young enough. I reckon well finish bottom 5 this year.
If that's the case its a shame they didn't trade guys like Schoenmakers, Puopolo, Hartung, O'Rourke or Langford, though we'll never know if they tried and didn't get enough interest or high enough offers.

Some teams get stuck in no man's land between topping up and rebuilding without fully committing to either of them, and suffer for it. I trust Clarko & Wright's judgement but was expecting another bold trade period like the last one. There was an awful lot of talk last off-season that we let Mitchell & Lewis go because we were trying to clear cap space for this year because we had big free agency signings planned. Now I'm worried our plans have fallen through because our marquee signings had changes of heart.

Have we seen Hartung's potential? Johnson in 2006 was exactly the same age as Hartung is now, and exactly the same position (except probably riskier).

This is what is shitting me
Posters carrying on coz we didn't get the likes of Balic ffs
Or Schache who has shown nothing yet suddenly is a " power forward"
The carry on just shits me
Wait until the 'off season'.

Hartung was quite publicly on the table. Poppy had rumours circulating. O'Rourke with his injury history would not have netted anything remotely good - particularly uncontracted. If Schache went for 25 and 40 I can't see Schoey netting us anything remotely valuable.

Why throw away players that know the system for crappy picks in a shallow draft?

Doing something for something's sake isn't always a great plan.
