Pick 18 - Hawthorn
Luke Ryan - Coburg
DOB: 6/2/96 Height: 185cm, Weight: 87kg
Position: Medium Defender

Mature-aged bolter who is a direct replacement for Josh Gibson even though being 4cm shorter. His ability to read the play, gain intercept possessions and spoil the ball are all Gibson traits which Ryan possesses. Averages 20 disposals per game for Coburg and 6 marks, so is able to gain the ball and use it well by both hand and foot (83% DE)

I quite like Scharenberg but the one thing is that the Adelaide midfield (much like the Lions) is fairly one paced and that pace is slow. Scharenberg is more of the same. The crows could stand to add some pace to the group.

It's interesting....as I used to find the crows midfield incredibly slow but this year I don't think anyone would say it is slow, especially with Cameron, Atkins, Smith and B Crouch (he's quickish, Matt is not). Combined with the style of play (quick movement) net result is a speedy transition from defence to attack. Lyons is quicker than I thought as well. Mackay is speedy but he's just shit.

Scharenberg would be a step up from the slower paced crows mids in talent.

First surprise is in the books, and it's a good one!

Pick 19 Essendon Dylan Clarke 187cm 85kg Eastern Ranges

Another tough and strong inside midfielder who has had a terrific TAC cup season and his national carnival was good enough to warrant All Australian selection.
Dylan's number one asset is his ability to win the footy at stoppages. He reads the ball off hands extremely well, he has a strong powerful body and he is very brave and will put his head over the footy every time. He is the best clearance player I have seen at TAC level since Libba. The kid just keeps getting the footy.
He has a strong endurance base that is well above average which is combined with adequate speed. He has a very professional attitude off the ground and will take to footy like a duck to water.
Dylan's kicking is the knock. He has a mechanical technique which looks cumbersome. However his kicking efficiency numbers stack up ok and he will end up like Matthew Priddis an adequate kick. Nothing more, nothing less. Clarke has very good hands and brings outside runners into the game really well. This will be his go at AFL Level. His defensive pressure is at AFL standard which is often not the case for kids coming into the system.

Rationale
I really rate this kid. As i talked about when selecting Brodie, our midfield needs a fair bit of work which should occur in this draft. Watson,Cooney, Goddard and Hocking will all be gone in two seasons. They need replacing and our seconds are not stacked with great replacements. Ashby and J Merrett have not come on. Hams honest but a plodder- Kavanagh and OBrien delisted last year.
I considered Sproule in this spot but I just think our midfield should be our focus and brown can do the job for another year. I also considered another favourite player who I am hoping lasts to my next pick.

GWS - Tim Toranto

POULTERBEAR

I guess if Snoop comes online before the pick, he can change his mind.

* Firstly apologies to Harry Perryman......unfortunately for some reason i often refer to him as Hamish! Suspect won't be the last time as its clearly in my head now...

GWS # 17

Tim Taranto - Sandy Dragons / 186cm / 82kg

Really like the kid. Been so impressed with him in the 4-5 times I have seen him. He is such a classy player who works harder than he probably gets credit for. He has a great aerobic base and I suspect will push a high 15 beep at testing. Tim also has good lateral movement and a bit of power in his running so can exit a stoppage or congestion comfortably and he then makes really good decisions with fantastic ball use which is amongst the very best in the draft pool. His ability to hit targets whilst he has frontal and lateral pressure is a real tick for him. Collectively I think these are facets that clubs are rewarding more and more in their analysis of players and I suspect with strong performances into the carnival he might rise a bit.

He is another like Perryman and Venables who have already taken who can play a few different roles and that suits GWS perfectly albeit I still think they are crying out for a talented HF type to partner Greene and Smith. Clearly Kennedy is in that mix, Ahern and Pickett inj but given WHE hasn't taken the spot and SJ may not go around again next year its an area the club have highlighted they want to look at.

That is a very interesting selection. Ryan would probably be available at pick 36 or possibly even 54.

Pick 20 - Brisbane

Brandon Parfitt

Okay first up. As per last year I am not going to take any of the Lions Academy kids in the practice run. I am interested in seeing where other people have them and will leave them for others to take or not as the case might be.

On Parfitt I think he is one of the few special talents in this draft and I am surprised he is still here. He has the ability to be a good small forward which is why he was not featured in the midfield as much as he should have been in either the Allies or the AFL Academy. I have watched him for the NT though for the last couple of years and make no mistake, he is very good when he is onball and can control games. He will start his career as a forward and will be very useful but in time I expect him to be a dominating midfielder. He has time, pace, skill and the ability to read the play quicker than others.

The player he reminds me most of as a junior is Dayle Garlett (cue laughs from certain people :)) but hopefully he has none of the off field issues that killed Garlett’s chances of making it. Garlett dominated for WA a few years ago but was so toxic off the field he was overlooked in his draft year and then rookied by the Hawks the year after before washing out the following year. There is no suggestion that Parfitt has anything like those issues and as a similar talent I will be interested in seeing how Parfitt goes given how vocal I was in saying how teams should give Garlett a go.

If you were looking for a comparison with a guy who actually plays AFL football I think Allen Christensen would be a good one. Both players are a little on the short side but move well and are smart with the ball when they get it. They can win their own ball and are smart runners without the ball. I think Parfitt is more of a team player than Christensen is though and will work defensively and play within team structures.

I would be absolutely stoked if we picked up Parfitt here in the real draft.

Pick 21 - Gold Coast - Brad Scheer

I really wanted to let Brad Scheer keep falling and see where he would be selected as he is a member of the Gold Coast Academy but he is almost the perfect selection for Gold Coast at this point. Gold Coast have been very poor this year in winning contested footy and clearances, yes their starting midfield has been injured a fair bit, but they do need depth and some strong inside types. Scheer is one of the best inside mids in this years draft, he is a contested freak who excels when it gets tough. He has had a reasonably good year and really developed some other areas of his game which is impressive. He is now a very strong mark overhead and hits the scoreboard well when he rests forward. This in my opinion has really pushed him up into the first round and I would be surprised if he did not receive a bid around the 15 mark in the real draft.

As far as his strengths go, they have been well documented, he is very good in tight, has clean hands and is strong over the ball. In fact his core strength is his one of his biggest assets as he stands in tackles and gets his arms free and can occasionally break free of tackles with just sheer (pun intended) power and strength. He is prone to just banging it forward but he has been better at distributing it more. He lacks break away speed, but that hasn't stopped a lot of players in the AFL with similar athletic attributes. His marking overhead is very good and he is like Dustin Martin when he goes forward. I am unsure on his endurance and i believe that may be a reason why he does not win a ton of ball on the outside but this would be something that can be improved. His disposal is reasonably good and he hits most easy targets, I doubt he will ever be an elite kick but it is not an area of issue.

He is able to play almost immediately and I would expect him to have an impact next year. His U16 form was excellent and his U18 form has also been good. He has also shown that he is good enough to play against men and he is performing very well in the NEAFL. As I said before he fits what I wanted in this draft for Gold Coast and I imagine that in the real thing they would be ecstatic to get him for a discount.

Pick 22 - Gold Coast - Jy Simpkin

Gold Coast have the luxury of having 4 second round picks this year, whilst in the real thing they would be used for academy kids and points here I just get to select best available and who I think would help the Gold Coast the most. Gold Coast selected Callum Ah Chee early last year and he plays as a half forward although I think the hope is that he spends some time on ball as he develops. Jy Simpkin is another forward half player who has missed most of the year and as a result slid down the draft. He could have possibly pushed into the top 10 especially if he had shown he was not only dangerous around the goals but also capable of dominating out of the midfield. The hope with Simpkin is that he is able to move into the midfield, but I don't think Gold Coast would mind if he is dominating as a small forward and averages between 1.5 to 2 goals a game whilst averaging 15 disposals and being very damaging.

The things that stand out with Simpkin are his disposal, speed, agility, reading of the game and his hurt factor. His kicking is very good and he is especially dangerous around goals and hitting targets. He is a nippy player and has a great burst of speed off the mark, he is agile and I have heard him being described as bubbly which somehow is a good description. He is reasonably strong overhead and he has the ability to present a lead up option. His reading of the game in the forward half is elite, he gets to the right spots and is very good at crumbing the ball off packs. It is what makes me think that he would do very well as a true small forward. He does push up the ground and he is good in contests although he does lack some size and strength. I am unsure on what his endurance would be like now and I believe he would have to build into the midfield but he has the ability to get there imo.

He does present as a player with a bit of risk attached to him and he is a player who has some unknown attached to him but at pick 22 he is great value in what shapes out to be a reasonably strong draft. I would expect him to spend most of next year in the NEAFL developing his game and if he did play AFL, it would be as a small forward.

LemmingMaster you are up

Pick 23 - Josh Battle
POS: Tall forward, Ht 192cm, Wt 90kg, DOB 1/9/98 From Dandenong Stingrays/Vic Country

There are a number of midfield options that I would easily take here, on my vision they have performed better than Battle. Battle has enough AFL qualities that give him a chance at AFL level.
His kicking for goal reminds me a little of Pavlich with his strength and kicking action. While he missed a few goals, I still like his action. H could be will be an above average goal kicker at AFL level.
During the championships he did not use his endurance enough, but from all reports he dominates time trials and distance running. That is great for his height and the modern game.
I watched him dominate a 5 minute period v WA and then went missing for the rest of the game. VC did not have a lot of action up forward, but I would not mind him bringing himself into the game more.
Adding to the Blues forward line for the future.

Battle, McKay, Sumner
Ainsworth, Curnow, SOS

Very mobile and dynamic forward structure and I think I could snag a solid midfielder with my next pick based on the selections so far.

I would be watching the second half of the season for improvement from Battle, if he stagnates, then I would probably allow him to drift a lot further in the draft.
Offsider

I thought Offsider might have gone with Battle. I am not sure he ever makes it as a number 1 KPF but he has the potential to be a nice second option and GC could use another forward to work off Lynch. Wright is progressing well but I still think he would be best playing predominantly in the ruck as Tippet has done for Sydney this year.

Pick 24 - Gold Coast - Jarrod Berry

There were a few options that i had for this pick which I might go through after my next pick. Jarrod Berry presents good value here as that tallish half-back flanker who can be third man up at contests and use the ball effectively coming out of defence. I am not sure if he will ever be that tall midfielder that people expect that he might mature into. He has played primarily off the half-back line and looks to run with the ball and use his good kicking skills effectively. From all reports he is an excellent leader and would fit in well on the Coast.

Jarrod has a few really great attributes about himself, one he hits the contest hard and does not relent, two he has a great sense of where to be positioned in the game and he reads the play excellently, three his leadership and organisation of the back half is great, four he is an above average athlete and can provide some good run off half back, and five his decision making is great. His kicking looks like it will be above average and he seems to hit targets when he has time, but it is an area he needs to fix as he turns it over too often. He has missed a bit of footy with a shoulder injury and has not progressed into the midfield. I am not sure if he will ever make it into the midfield but he could become that taller inside player (but it is just a possibility and there is nothing to suggest he will make that transition).

Gold Coast need some players in their back half who will be that third man up, provide organisation and help their team mates out. Jarrod will provide that in spades although there is a risk that he may turn out to be a bit like David Myers and be in between positions.

Knightmare your first pick
