Biggest Album Let down?

Deftones - Saturday Night Wrist. Huge fall from grace considering the reputation they have on the rock scene. Major let down.

Gotta disagree. Saturday Night Wrist is a very good album. I'd say it's one of their strongest and a massive improvement on the album before it whose name escapes me right now.

weezer - make belive (2005) is one that comes to mind. three year gap from maladroit. it was talked up alot.guided by rick rubin etc. very flatt.

looking back i think

beck - the information. listened to it alot at the time but it just doesnt stand up in his cannon that well for rpt listens

bloc party - weekend in the city
arctic monkeys - fav worst nightmare

Silverchair - Young Mondern
Fuel - Angels and Devils

I thought this album was great.

Mine would have to be the first Audioslave album. While it has some good songs on it, after being a massive Soundgarden fan and with more than a passing interest in Rage Against The Machine, I was expecting the album to completely blow me away. Rarely do I ever listen to it anymore. :(

It's from 1988, but Metallica's And Justice For All.

After arguably the best metal album ever (Master of Puppets) it was a massive step down. I know they lost Cliff and stuff, but bloody hell, Jason Newsted wasn't useless, and I don't get why there was no bass in the whole album. JAson used to be in the band Flotsam and Jetsam, I mean, they are one of the fastest riffers I have heard, and Metallica treat him like ****?

I watched the Metallica doco on World Movies the other night.
Excellent viewing:thumbsu:

Trendy? Maybe people thought Metallica sucked after Justice because, well, Metallica sucked after Justice? Especially in comparison to their earlier work...

I don't see what trendiness has to do with it..

Mate I just don't buy the whole, Metallica sold out and everything after Justice sucked bandwagon, but that could be a whole new thread so I will leave it alone.

'TheFutureEmrace' - Billy Corgan. Coudln't wait for this, considering most of the Pumpkins was him solo anyway. I was half-expecting an Adore-like effort, and these hopes were raised even higher when I saw the vid for 'Walking Shade' on Rage one night. A total U-turn away from Zwan.

But then the album came out. And Walking Shade was almost the only highlight for me.

Another notable let-down was 'The Cure' (self-titled), in 2004. Got rave reviews everywhere though. Probably inevitable because they returned as the 'real thing' in an age of poor imitations. But still, by their standards, disappointing.

Korn- Issues.

Metallica- Reload.

Limp Bizkit- everything.

Kiss - The Elder - even had Kiss fans going WTF?

Van Halen - OU812

Anything by Oasis after Morning Glory, they continually disappoint. Get back on the drugs boys.

I haven't actually heard any of Corgan's work outside of the Pumpkins. Is Zwan any good? I've heard it didn't sell very well, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's crap?

I like this album but can't help but think it's funny that a Billy Corgan solo album would have been huge if it had been released 10 years earlier. Funny to think Walking Shade was added at the last moment to give it as Billy said a big dumb song that the album was lacking. The iTunes bonus Track Tilt is one of my favourite songs full stop. Check it out.

I quite like Mary Star of the Sea. Very jesus heavy and happy go lucky but still a very good pop rock album. Tracks like Lyrics, Declaratons of Faith and Jesus I/Mary Star of the Sea are a must for any Billy fan.

I have to agree with silverchair - Young Modern.

Zwan, I didn't mind. Took a while to get into. Really liked 3 tracks (Lyric, El Sol, Of a Broken Heart), and the rest was not bad. Still though, a watered-down version of Billy's songwriting, when you consider what he 'threw away' and never officially released with the Pumpkins ('If there is a god', 'Let me give the world to you' etc). So many gems. See Machina II. I know the two bands can't be compared, but Billy's songwriting 'eras' can be.

The solo album.. well if he thought 'Walking Shade' was a stupid song, then songs such as 'All things change', 'DIA', 'A100' (what the f___?) are 40 year olds repeating year 3. Really disappointing. Robert Smith even guests, but you can't even hear him! Disappointments at every turn.

Can't help but feel bitter that the Pumpkins released Machina II legitimately no strings attached free 7 years before Radiohead with In Rainbows and now I read reports of fans thinking songs like Cash Car Star were new when played during recent shows and the press drooling all over In Rainbows (good album though) when they ignored Machina II. If you consider Machina I and II as one album as intended it actually becomes a lot stronger of an album due mostly to Machina II making up for the weaknesses on Machina I.

I was also really disappointed by Disturbed's second album.

I'm in the minority, I know, but I really liked Machina I. It 'hung together like a picture', as Johnny Marr would say. Probably my favourite album. The first 4 tracks are 4 of my favourite Pumpkins songs. Wound, Age Of Innocence, are up there too.

Machina II was great for the strength of individual songs. Gems were plucked out left, right, and centre- but it does sound like an odds and sods collection, listening to it track by track.

Perhaps they could have cut some of the pomp from Machina I, and sprinkled in some more rock. Probably a time and place thing for me personally, too.

Modest mouse - we were dead before the ship even sank

after their previous albums i had high expectations. but instead of expanding on everything good about previous albums wwdbtses seems to be entirely composed of everything that didn't work properly only magnified 10 fold. might be over the top but this album really did not live up to any of my expectations.

It's taken me a while to appreciate Machina I. I think Try Try Try, The Imploding Voice and Crying Tree of Mercury should have been cut but apart from that it's a damn fine album much like Zeitgeist.

Two that jump to mind from 2007 are:

Scarsick by Pain of Salvation
Fear of a Blank Planet by Porcupine Tree.

Scarsick has moments of genius but isnt up to the lofty standards of previous POS releases. The theme was interesting to an extent but unlike their previous concepts grew stale/repetitive quickly.

I was a little bemused by the media's love of Fear of a Blank Planet, given they had ignored PT's previous superior work. Solid album dont get me wrong with a couple of great tracks, but weak vocals and lyrics (usually a PT stength) ruined it a bit for me.

I agree that it wasn't as good as 'good news for people who like bad news' but that is a fantastic album. When I first bought WWDBTSES, I was a bit disappointed but after a few listens it really grew on me. Still not as good as 'Good News' but not a bad album either.
