The bombers were a Fraser Brown tackle away from a grand final

Richmond were down by 9 goals to a team who only had beaten two top 8 opponents this year and had travelled to Perth only two weeks prior.

Not to mention the best defender to have graced the playing field being towelled up by a bloke who had never heard of the game two years ago lol

Don't forget that Carlton were in 10th position at the completion of Round 16 and were labelled a B Grade outfit by their very own coach.

Heading into that prelim they had won only 2 of their previous 5 games, including a 76 point loss against Brisbane in week 1 of the finals. They also had not beaten a top 4 side all season.

On the other hand, Essendon finished 18-4, had won 14 of their previous 15 games, including their past 8 straight, and had beaten Carlton twice that year by 35 & 76 points.

They also led by 3 goals in the final quarter of that prelim and had the momentum, until Kouta decided he'd seen enough.

It's easily the bigger upset. Collingwood finished 3rd this year and are actually a half decent side. It was obviously an upset, but not on the scale the Carlton one was.

Red hot flag favourites get mixed up in a nailbiting Prelim surprisingly often; they usually survive them. But for a clear flag favourite to be almost humiliated in a Prelim? I can't recall that happening under the two Prelim system (1994 onwards).

Essendon in 1999 knackers, as the entire convo has been about. You a drug user or what???

This is not a debate. Carlton kicked 16.8 while Essendon kicked 14.19 to lose that by 1 point. It'll take a lot to beat that upset.

Collingwood were actually pretty good this year.

Going to be a while before you have such a monumental mismatch in a PF again like 99. Think any lower seeded side who wins two finals and gets to play a hypothetical behemoth will at least be a credible side, and not a b grade outfit like that Carlton side.

In recent years, very few ordinary sides have made finals (Essendon last year and North in 2016 probably exceptions) unlike some of the mediocrity that made up the numbers in the 90s and 00s. Any finalist nowadays can beat anyone on their day.

Collingwood had a good day, Richmond had a bad one. The magnitude of the victory is the most surprising thing here. I thought going into the game that if everything went right for the pies and the tigers were a few percent off, they may push them to the line. It appears in hindsight that Richmond's indifferent end to the home and away season may have been symptomatic of mental fatigue.

Essendon had 9 more scoring shots than Carlton - Blues 16.8 to Bombers 14.19, that score is etched into my brain and I can still vividly remember Mark Mercuri lunging and trying to grasp justin Murphy towards the end of the final quarter and you knew It was not going to be Essendons day. The Bombers weren't embarrassed the way Collingwood slapped around Richmond last night though.

Carlton were 7th at the end of the regular season from memory. Beating the Bombers made the 99 Grand Final a fizzer for mine. We all knew Carlton didn't have another game in them. Besides, North vs Essendon was to set up one of the most anticipated grannies of that time for neutrals - the final fling for the North warriors against Sheedy's raging Bombers. In contrast, Collingwood has made the Grand Final interesting because I reckon if Richmond had made it, it was a fait accompli they'd win it.

Hardwick was in the 99 prelim I think, so he will have the experience of a crushing defeat as favourite and the resolution to come back the following year and do it all again from scratch. Richmonds minor premiership this year counts for naught now.

Problem for Richmond is this Lynch thing...on big money, existing players thought they'd have a second premiership by the time he comes in. Could upset the Apple cart

Some of the Richmond players were a bit too jovial as they were walking out of the sheds for the game last night. Same players had a mare. Time for games and laughs, last night required intensity and they didn't have it. Martin being lame ****ed up their structure too. Shouldn't have played

It's the flag the Tigers should have won
Callum Twomey

LAST year the Tigers were the surging premiership contenders that nobody predicted. This year they were the unbackable favourites.

It is why Friday night's defeat at the hands of Collingwood was one of the great upsets of the modern era in one of the biggest games of the modern era.

In front of a crowd of 94,959 rabid fans, the MCG rocked as the Pies overcame the might and power of Richmond to knock out the reigning champs. It was as crushing as it was stunning.

In terms of the result, Carlton d Essendon, in terms of the way Collingwood absolutely smashed Richmond early, I can't remember a prelim where the favourite ($1.30 seemed like short odds for mine, $1.50 seems more like it) was so comprehensively smashed. 50 points up around half time usually results in a 80+ belting. A bit like Germany thrashing Brazil 7-1, though I don't think Brazil were favourites. Just an unprecented scoreline.

Have felt Collingwood have the ability to just go beserk for periods where they are unbeatable. Like the Bombers of the late 90s/early 00s. Just seldom been able to maintain that all game, but basically did last night. Richmond became too comfortable with it's plan/structures, which fell apart with frantic pressure. Their aerial marking game is probably thsir achilles heel, an area West Coast probably still does better than any. Work well as a team but not enough individual brilliance outside of a few players. Can't fault Riewoldt, he did everything he could and was bog for Richmond. But again DeGoey had a blinder, Sidebottom was in usual sublime, dominant form, dictating play, and of course everything clicked for Cox's marking.

Expecting to get away without a proper second ruck to assist Nankervis for so long just fatal mistake of getting comfortable when never should have been. They had no answer in coaching box to Grundy and Cox. None!!!!

Carlton in 99 was a 2nd tier team upsetting one of the best ever.

Saying tonight was an upset that big is disrepectful to collingwood.

Richmond 2018 are not as good as Essendon 99 and Coll 2018 are far better than carlton 99

Carlton in 99 won more games against top 8 sides during the season, so were clearly a better side.

We were B grade at best in 99. We got badly beaten by Brisbane up at Gabba in week one. We were 6th on ladder before that. Stupid system allowed us a double chance back then. So we used it for two more weeks with nothing to lose to take out Eagles easily and then your mob that got ahead of themselves talking about the next week's grand final before you were even in it. They were probably our two best games for the season. That is why 99 prelim was such a huge upset as we were genuinely not a top 4 side. We were a genuine 6th to 8th side at best.

Astbury’s pretty good but nobody is calling him the best defender ever.

****ing idiots saying Richmond choked. They were flat out beaten by a team who played harder and made the most of their opportunities early.

Collingwood were fantastic. Richmond simply ran into a team that played better on the night. Its not like Richmond had opportunities to win the match. They were never given any.

Yeah really needed a second tall.
Coleman-Jones or Chol on their list should have been groomed from early in season to get games into them to pinch hit and play a bit forward but nope, thought they were clever and joked about Grigg as a premiership ruckman with 1 hit out at best last year's grand final. Has come back to bite them hard getting too comfortable.

Yeah, gonna be intriguing what they change up next year. Lynch coming in will likely change their forward structure. Maybe their style is becoming a bit predictable.
