Why are people using defence in saying we can cover for Docherty? He hasn’t played there for two years

He’s a mid/fwd/wing player
I was just referring to the comment I was responding to but probably shouldn’t have chucked boyd in there was no need

As you said Docs a mid and I believe yet again he’s replaceable in that role

Watching the replay now. He was moving laterally, jumping, kicking moving freely with that knee injury until he got subbed out. What a tough nut. Much much respect
I noticed this too - the injury is his kicking leg and he was kicking that ball across the ground like he had no injury concern, let alone an ACL and a meniscus, makes it so hard to believe when Coleman went off with the same injury and he was practically carried off.

Docherty and JSOS might both be replaceable (adding Jack as the same has been said about him) but they are also two players we’ve just lost from our depth chart. We will cop injuries throughout the year and no Docherty or JSOS to call on.

Sure. Was More talking about the general joints cartilage and plate wear and tear which is the usual cause of slow down.
Still comes down to the drugs and the individual, can wind up with atrophy leading to ligaments getting loose, neuropathy and nerve pain, general or specific inflammation, including on joint surfaces.

Might not be the exact same kind of wear, but can have a very similar impact and increase injury risk. It's all an educated dice roll to remove the mortal threat.

Yeah that's more the issue. Both are replaceable from the best 22 but if we cop injuries (like we have to Martin and Walsh), it could be a big step down to the next option.

Replaceable yes. But does it make us better?

I get the impression a lot of people underestimate how good Docherty is and what he brought to the side. Someone like Hollands will need to step up and be a lot better than he has previously

So shattered for Doc... It can be such a cruel game.
Will he maybe go for LARS?
Who was the last player to have the LARS treatment?

If it happened mid year it may have been a possibility to make sure he got back next season but with it happening so early in the season, he can spend a full 12 months getting it right ready to go early next season.

FYI - Greg Williams spoke at the pre game function on Friday night and he said he believes both Walsh and Marchbank will be available to play after the bye. I hope he is right.
You'd think his intel is pretty good so hopefully right. Didn't love Voss's body language and wording when talking about Walsh's return at his press conference but I could be reading too much into it.

Did Diesel mention anything about Weits & Martins return?
nup - just that thing about his third brownlow something something........

I’d certainly hope they’re available to play after the bye, given we should have about 20+ games after the bye for them to possibly play in.

What is going on with Marchbank’s “illness”? This seems very vague and that dude seems to be perpetually injured or recovering? He has been on the books for ages with little if any return on our investment … I have to say I am running out of patience with the guy? Does this make me a bad person?

He's had long covid.

Mostly played wing and on ball. Hoping that O Hollands maturing will cover his wing position. Hoping that E Hollands covers him as an onballer who occasionally plays at half forward. He's a very good player who I think we can fortunately cover for. Walsh coming back in also offsets Docherty's absence quite a lot as well.

I think we are lucky we have two young guys who are up and coming who will give his roles a really good shove.

This would be great. Both these guys plus Weitering walk into our best 22 and immediately improve us.

I see Doc going into coaching when he retires.

or Football manager

I attended a club function years ago and spoke to a ~ dozen players.

Doc was the only one that didn't sound sound like a footballer. He spoke with eloquence and insight well above his peers.

A bit late now, but addressing two recent points of contention re Doc ACL

1) Why did they send him back? How did they not realise he had torn his ACL?

Snapping your ACL doesn't actually hurt that much. It's ancillary damage (such as bone bruising) that causes most of the pain. It's not uncommon to not immediately realise you have torn your ACL. There is a (Lachman) test you can run, which checks for certain movement/stability in the knee. I'm guessing it's standard practice in the AFL, but you won't really know for sure if the ACL is gone or not without scans.

2) Do you really need to repair the ACL?

I tore mine years ago and went to see a (well-regarded) surgeon. I was 99% sure he would tell me to operate as that's how he got paid! He asked me a bunch of questions about my lifestyle and essentially recommended not to get surgery as I didn't really play sport and wasn't particularly active.

He said Australia by far leads the world in number of ACL surgeries due to how many ppl play footy, rugby, netball - which involve twisting more than many other sports. If you're playing any of these (or doing things like skiing) regularly, your knee won't really hold up properly without surgery. Otherwise, you could probably skip it. Note: talking very generally here, as obviously each person will have different circumstances about body, leg strength, arthritis, other factors.

Disclaimer: I don't have any medical qualifications, this is just from my personal experience and understanding.

they are also finding acls can repair on their own over the same time frame as surgery + rest allowing for more focus on strength building of the areas around the knee which has better chances of reducing repeat injuries. Still early stages on that path but it's gaining popularity slowly and some pro athletes have started considering it/ avoiding surgery.
