I think the most important review we need to have is that on the training surface at Ikon park.
We have been a clear outlier of all the afl clubs for Back and Foot injuries. Almost all of these have happened outside of game day.
We’ve has shocking luck when it’s come to football related injury and I can’t find fault with many over these.
But the amount of players we’ve lost for the season from stress fractures and hit spots has to be of serious concern.
This has been happening for the last 5 years.. something isn’t right.

Could it also coincide with playing at Marvel? It seems sides like *, Saints, Dogs, North, have also had above average injuries over the years

Carlton don't have injuries!

The Blues have one of the longest injury lists in the competition and were already without George Hewett (back), Matt Kennedy (foot), Nic Newman (knee), Jordan Boyd (foot), Ed Curnow (hamstring) and Josh Honey (calf), as well as Williams and Cerra, last week.

Didn't we do this only a few years ago prior to the AFLW launch? Feel like we copped an ACL injury while we trained on the backup field around PP

Surface changed to accommodate AFLW extra matches. NO down time for the ground as it used to have when cricket was played on it...

Not sure if there is a concrete base (which I doubt) half a meter under the surface (a la Marvel) which causes massive issues.

I agree, this has to be looked at and fixed...

Almost certain it did have a concrete base - i was under the assumption that was ripped up but maybe it was just the turf. Recall posters like DocSherrin discussing this very thing about 6 years ago

There’s no concrete base under Princes Park. That’s Marvel for the car park underneath.

in fact, there was speculation at some point that stress problems might be caused by the ground being too soft.

There is stress test equipment that can test this as its regularly used in Europe for football pitches during winter for icing and saturation…

Just like your prostate, get it checked….

The severity of our injuries this year is incredible.

  • Walsh Syndesmosis
  • Stocker Syndesmosis
  • TDk shoulder infection? (Months)
  • Williams months with a bad calf
  • Cuningham: ongoing god knows what
  • Philp more foot dramas out for another year
  • Kennedy Lisfranc
  • McKay knee surgery
  • Weiters shoulder surgery
  • Newman gashed knee (month)
  • boyd broken foot months
  • McGovern hamstring surgery months
  • Martin calf : heaps of games
  • Pittonet knee surgery months
  • Hewett: back disc (played with it then couldn’t, weeks)
  • Ed Curnow: soft tissue all year
  • Honey surgery months on leg
  • Sam Durdin knee weeks
  • Marchbank knee weeks

Just absolutely incredible really.
And yet, we are still in contention for a finals

Whilst quite disappointed with the loss to Melb - how can you not be proud of the boys and the willingness to soldier on/ next man up mentality?

The ability to play well (at times) despite the lack of continuity is very promising. The "Almost Premiers" Pies of 2018 followed on from a horrendous year for injuries in 2017(13th). The main difference - continuity within the playing group

From memory, the Hawthorn treble followed a couple of years run of horrible injuries too.

We have recruited a lot of players who were obtainable mostly or partly because they had regular or major injury issues.

We have a young list with plenty of immature bodies.

We haven't been a very good side and we have become a team which has developed a taste for and an ability for winning. A lot of our wins have required a great deal of effort, physicality etc etc. It's fair to say that we don't often win easy.

There has been an element of luck involved here as well as there is with all teams.

All these things add up. If you look at our injury list it mostly contains the players which I have described above.

The solution is to maintain the highest level of staff in our medical department and best possible practice and keep the players fit and strong and hope for the best. You could say that injury history with players should have an impact in our recruiting as well.

It has been acknowledged in the media that we've had a long injury list, but I think it is mostly fans that recognise how much we've achieved this year given the personnel that have been out.

While 'next man up' has proved a resilient philosophy, really that attitude only translates to wins once the system is set. I would say the coaches would've given anything for a 6-8 week block where the team didn't change much. Once that system is embedded, it is easier to bring a new person into a position when everyone around them is running like a well oiled machine. Fingers crossed that we may one day see such a sight...

Not that I get pleasure from anyones injury however J Cameron has done a hamstring will miss up to 3 weeks, that leaves Charlie 7 clear of Hawkins and Lynch you’d think both of them will have big days though so who knows if he hangs on.

Whatever happens, Curnow is sure to be AA this year and that is absolutely remarkable in itself.

Metal studs? Newman was definitely done on boots with screw in pointy metal studs, I thought they were banned for this very reason

You’ve got to do a lot of walking on concrete/bitumen to wear a sharp/flat spot on steel studs.

As someone who played rugby as a forward and got raked or stood on quite a bit, the molded blades (aptly named) usually seemed to be worse than steel screw ins as they had more of a ‘corner’ to them instead of a dull/round shape.

Plus we had two weeks on the road and 6 day break

I mean I understand you’re losing a rhetorical question……..

But I think cold objective analysis would say this has been a phenomena effort by this team. I look back to games like the Cats and realise guys like Hewett were most certainly playing injured. And we still had so many out. I think we’ve been unfair on the olaying group this year. Dealing with the injuries they’ve had has def caused losses, which in turn has put them under a lot of pressure, which has in turn caused losses.

I finish the year so incredibly proud of them. Whether that’s this weekend or in the weeks to come. Saturday night was the moment they arrived. Big time. And will be forever the turning point.

Has the club released a timeline on Kennedy injury?. Having a look at a Lins Franc its very nasty. Has the potential for Kennedy to miss a large chunk of next season.

It's so sad.

He just gets going and now has a potentially career ending injury.

I hope for the best, and expect the worst.

Best wishes MK.
