I have to say one thing about our injuries, as much as they suck, they have accelerated the development of our team.

The biggest one is De Koning. Pittonet goes down, De Koning gets smashed in the suns game, he was constantly being talked about the player who should be dropped. Now after a good run as number one ruck he has flourished, where he was floundering playing forward pocket and a little ruck. He's developed a lot because of this opportunity.

Motlop, a few injuries and he gets his chance. Up and down for in the VFL and his debut was underwhelming but his second game was excellent. You could just see that playing in that team with our main coaches and leaders, the way you play changes and for him it did. The physicality and intensity in his second game was another two levels from his first and his VFL games. He'll come on a lot by playing in our AFL team.

Young. Young was backup at the start of the year, his first month was timid, not really going for his marks. Now you wouldn't have him out. He's improved a lot, he's marking the ball, he's playing confident footy. He's looking like a bargain pick.

Carroll. He's gaining extremely valuable experience and you can see him learning. Great to be able to get games into him.

Cottrell. He's first man in for a lot of players and the regular sub but just quietly he's gone from a player who was probably on his last contract to one you would think definitely goes around again. He's improved a great deal, he's exceeding all expectations and has featured in some big wins when players needed to step up.

The game plan. It was looking like we were relying on Curnow and McKay to kick all our goals with DeKoning and Silvagni pitching in. We were looking like being a tall dominant team but all of a sudden, we are down to one tall and one medium tall and a really good group of small forwards. It's improved how we move the ball, it's allowed us to work on our ground level play up forward and allowed us to use our small forwards as a really effective team. IMO it's accelerated the development of our forward line. It's really going to ask some questions of how we want our forward structure once all are fit and available.

There are a few other doors which have been opened. Stocker for instance gets a good look at things with Williams out. He has the chance to develop and really make a big claim on that position.

Kemp got a small taste, there are a few others like Dow waiting for the door to open to see whether they come in and improve. Boyd has had a taste and in his last game he showed he had taken steps forward. He's miles ahead now than what he would be if he had not had a few AFL games.

Injuries are not always a bad thing, in our case there's been a lot of good come from it. We've developed some players and our game plan.

This could actually be the thing that gets us a lot closer to a premiership this year. This extra development into players along with some injury luck if we get a few back. If everything clicks and falls into place at the right time we can win it and this could have something to do with it if it does.

I know there has been no official update but has there been any word on Pitto's progress?

The less conservative timeframe has him potentially returning in 4-5 weeks, which is relatively soon.

The preferred approach would have been adopted several weeks ago, and with it a more specific return estimate (which itself could by now be refined based on actual progress).

I'm not raising because of a belief that the club needs to be forthcoming with all injury news, but it seems odd there hasn't been an update. Pondering if it could mean he'll be a surprise inclusion over the next month, or alternatively recovery has blown out further than 3 months.

I’ve been thinking the same thing, it looks like amazing depth but we have a good spread of players ready to take their next step.

The best thing about it that we are still winning and putting games into 5-8 < 50 game players.

Most weeks we go in with less games experience and younger and still win.

Good post, definitely a lot of positives to come out of our injuries.

You could even argue the improvement of Plowman in the absence of Gov.

If not this year, will really help with a premiership push next year and beyond.

Also helps us make list management decisions...like you said, we now know TDK will be very good so we have 2 x good no.1 ruck options. Opinions would be different if Pitto stayed fit and we only had his Gold coast game to judge him on.

Cottrell a must keep.

Shines a beacon on us needing more KPP depth that Austin can't ignore.

Thought Montagna said on Sunday night he was hearing Pitto was about 4 weeks away.

It just says injured. Anyone know what the injury is? How bad? how long he’ll be out.
He’s a massive out for us. This is now Dows make or break game

Dow's a more than adequate replacement....

Reckon Kennedy's absence might let Cerra get more involved too...

10 months ago, most would have had Dow in for Kennedy as a big positive! (and kudos to Bam Bam for turning his career around)

Go Blues.

And just like that a door opens for Dow and he gets his opportunity to make a claim and develop in this team, even if only for a week. Kennedy out means we just use other mids more like Cerra.

He will get more than one week, and so he should

No guarantee there, much like Kemp in for the solidarity game as a replacement (acquitted himself well too).
Bye to follow & if everyone is fit, will come down to selection criteria again.
Performance is a must for PD.

Kennedy copped some massive hits last week. Didn't flinch for a moment or lose his composure despite being the recipient of some hospital handpasses. Tough as nails that one.
He was also given 2 or 3 hospital passes and was crunched the week before. Not surprised he's sore.

As well as having a VFL side that is doing well and making our second string players put in top performances just to be considered for the senior squad.

If Paddy hits every KPI set for him, by Voss and the coaching staff, for the game, and plays very well, then it'll make it hard to drop him and bring Kennedy straight back in. I'd prefer to see PD get a couple of games. Give Kennedy a week in the VFL to get any lost fitness back, and then see what's happening after the game after the bye.

Based on Kennedy's form highly unlikely he would not be a automatic selection.
He has played most of the season doubt missing 1 game would have any impact on fitness levels.
