so they've clearly paid him an absolute bomb for 6 years. do we mind that hawthorn have tied up that much money on josh battle until 2030
Exactly. The AFL are just following their process here. Hawthorn are the one's that have triggered such a high pick.

They are obviously paying a huge amount here. Having said that, we don't know the structure of the deal over the course of the contract. Also, I trust the Hawks will get the most out of him and turn him into a player worthy of the contract. At least, let's wait and see.

The annual amount is reportedly not that high. They changed the system this year to factor in contract length rather then just annual average salary.

But if this means clubs can just offer 7 year deals on moderate money to trigger band 1 compo then that's a big problem. Makes it much easier to take advantage.

I’m stoked the Hawks have paid that much for a frankly unremarkable defender

Will need lots to retain:
Dear, Newcombe, Day, Moore etc.

Plus they’re signing Barass for a lot too, who is a good defender (one I’d have liked) but not amazing by any stretch

Doesn't the 'points system' the AFL use stop accruing points after year 5. So a 7 year contract is the same as a 5 year one.

The "points system" is not real, it's just a mechanism for the AFL to give handouts to their favourite clubs like the expansion teams, any northern club, St Kilda, Collingwood, Essendon etc.

All our hard work, investment and time and resource put into trades and list management is at risk due to the whims of the idiotic and imbecilic afl throwing out ridiculous picks for an UFA.
I hate that they hate our club so much. And favour their little pet clubs.
