I'm sorry, did you legitimately suggest that recruiting Isaac Smith would push Oliver out of Melbourne's midfield?

Hehe, that was where I shut my browser and pushed myself away from the keyboard for a little while too. Time for a spell.

What-ifs and maybes are fun in the off-season, but it all just goes a bit mental sometimes.

I've no reason that Oliver would be available other than I reckon it would make sense for the Dees to move ONE of their inside midfielders away - but if he was we should throw anything and everything. He and Cripps would be monstrous.

ITK C09 has recently stated in Bluemours that Oliver has been approached and we are awaiting his decision. If he accepts, it is going to throw a spanner in the works for the Saad trade, by finding Picks and/or players to satisfy both * and Melbourne. What do others think? What players, if any, would we be prepared to give up to satisfy Melbourne?

If Oliver comes across it will be for our future first rounder plus the Geelong first rounder that doesn't go to the Bombers for Saad - if they want something else they can have 27.

As you say I can't see them wanting a player we would be happy to part with that would move the needle.

Melbourne would want more and rightly so.

Some bad shit must have gone down for Oliver to be seriously contemplating going to another club.
Can anyone actually see Melbourne letting him go, given he's under contract and not set to become a Free Agent, next year?

If they do consider it, I'd love to know the back-story attached.
Two firsts (given where they'd be) and a player like SPS/Fisher, then maybe......but not for what could amount to two very late firsts

Gives us options ... and coverage ...
I agree it’s coverage, but is Setterfield happy sitting in the reserves waiting for an Oliver/Cripps injury?

I think he is two good to be in the reserves, but I can’t see a best 22 spot unless they turn him into something else, but what?

You satisfy Melbourne and get Oliver and then ream the * ...

The only thing I’d say about Melbourne if he truly wants out and they accept it, they have shown with moves like Hogan recently they are reasonable to deal with (despite the Peter Bell antics)

So if Melbourne accept it and want to move on it, I say it gets done. But it won’t be cheap & it won’t be a bargain.

The question you need ask would you accept that for Cripps? Not suggesting they are the same, rather Melbourne surely values him the same way we value Cripps.

I suggest at minimum you’d need this years first and nexts years, just for Melbourne

maybe maybe you can get a second back

We're so stingy.

Oliver is worth 2020 and 2021 firsts all day, every day.

Pay the picks and hello top 4 next year.

If you have a disgruntled player (as you say some bad stuff must have gone down) playing a role where you are over endowed (inside mids aren't exactly in short supply at the Dee's) and being offer say 13 (assuming we get 13 and 16 from Geelong 16 would be closer to Saad's worth) a future first and 27 would certainly be worth considering IMO.

Getting Oliver will depend on if Melbourne can replace a player they have a surplus in for something they need and will help them take that next step. To be honest they aren’t far away they just need a few pieces (and maybe a better coach)

But if they could trade Oliver and bring in saw Ben Brown and Issac Smith/Jack Gunston (who hawks may be open to selling for currency) they instantly improve areas of need.

Brown solves there KPF need while also helps out 2nd ruck.
Smith provides an experienced damaging Wingman but more importantly the an experienced head from a successful program

Yes Oliver is far more valuable long term but they need to improve these problem areas.

I am in no way proposing a stupid big footy trade but I think there might be some logic for Melb to

If Saad entered this year's ND... which club in their right mind would draft him with pick 7?

I'd be ropeable if we did that... he'd still be there by the time it reaches our second rounder...

Not a chance, do you think the Cats with 3 first round picks and in the premiership window, wouldn’t draft a sure thing with one of them?

No way a team out of the 8 wastes a first rounder on him but the teams in the window would for sure.

If and big if Oliver comes across, where does that leave Setterfield? Can we run a midfielder or Oliver, Cripps & Setterfield?
Look at Ports midfield, then look at Geelongs, then look at Oliver, Cripps and Setterfield and get excited. Even go back to Adelaides midfield in their grand final run. The Hawks midfield too.

Multiple big bodied options areseemingly common in most dominant teams, not all because there's no one way to gain success but it certainly is not a bad thing.

Would work perfectly for the Saad trade.

7 and future first for Oliver and an early second (23).

One of:
- 23 and 27 for Saad and change (future third ~37-40).
- 23 and 27 to the Bulldogs for 12 and change (anything from the late 3rd round on still equals a point gain for the Dogs), send 12 to Essendon for Saad and change (still future third ~37-40).

I'd also consider splitting 7 for 13 and 16. Using 16 on Saad, and sending 13 and our future first to Melbourne for Oliver with nothing else coming back.

I'd certainly want to know why he's so disgruntled, first.
If it's for finishing fifth in the B&F....come one now....what do we do? Offer him our 2021 B&F now?

There's either something much more behind this, or he's using us to get a contract extension with plenty of extra $$$'s from Melbourne, now.
* It still is odd that Viney got 5 years so soon in the piece. Really threw me off.
