I agree it’s coverage, but is Setterfield happy sitting in the reserves waiting for an Oliver/Cripps injury?

I think he is two good to be in the reserves, but I can’t see a best 22 spot unless they turn him into something else, but what?

More likely the Ed Curnow role going forward. We currently play Ed, Setters and Cripps.

If and big if Oliver comes across, where does that leave Setterfield? Can we run a midfielder or Oliver, Cripps & Setterfield?
Don't need to. Oliver plays 70% mid, setters splits time off the wing 50/50, Cripps learns to take set shots and plays 60/40 mid fwd.

Of 3 (let's call it 300% time on ball)onballers, that makes up 180%.
Then you have Walsh 60/40 and Williams 60/40 that makes up your primary on ball brigade.

Cripps setters and Oliver never have to be on ball together. Either Walsh or Williams always on ball for that running power.

Yes, because a midfield is way more than 3-4 people. What it would mean is Cripps could spend more time on the bench (which he needs) and forward (for impact), and we would have one of the two clearance monsters in the middle for 100% of gametime. No respite for the opposition.

Setterfield and Ed probably play the more accountable/defensive roles, then need Fisher, Williams (hopefully), Walsh and everyone else to bring some flair and play their role. Murphy makes guest appearances for his last season or two. Hopefully Dow/LOB/SPS/Stocker et al sort out who can make an impact and get involved. Setterfield wouldn't be the one missing out, I think Kennedy would.

I find it hard to believe Oliver would be available and gettable, but if he is we go our hardest. Our team will be significantly improved by a player of his calibre. Two first-round picks, no question.

IF Cripps and Oliver where both at the bounce for us it would allow our other mids to play a significantly more attacking style. Which would make us much ‘faster’. The increased certainty of a positive clearance would make our outside types get on their bike trusting they’ll get the receive.

It won’t make us ‘slow’, but will change our balance that’s for sure.

Also important to note, before anyone gets concerned.
All our current contracts and contract offers are based on a full salary cap, with clauses included that reduction in cap is directly proportionate to reduction in player salary.
Doesn’t change our position at all.
It’s all relative.

I thought this would be the way they did it. Smart.

Getting Oliver will depend on if Melbourne can replace a player they have a surplus in for something they need and will help them take that next step. To be honest they aren’t far away they just need a few pieces (and maybe a better coach)

But if they could trade Oliver and bring in saw Ben Brown and Issac Smith/Jack Gunston (who hawks may be open to selling for currency) they instantly improve areas of need.

Brown solves there KPF need while also helps out 2nd ruck.
Smith provides an experienced damaging Wingman but more importantly the an experienced head from a successful program

Yes Oliver is far more valuable long term but they need to improve these problem areas.

I am in no way proposing a stupid big footy trade but I think there might be some logic for Melb to

And of course if Oliver is telling Melbourne he is open to leave or even wants to then for Melbourne it's a good time to cash in before he's OOC.

They'll still have Viney/Petracca/Brayshaw types in the midfield and as you said, they can give Oliver's money to Brown & Smith. It's definitely plausible but I think only if Oliver approaches them saying he's keen to move.

Maybe we shouldn't get Saad or Williams either in case they push someone out of the team?

I don't think Setters falls out of the 22 there, just continues as a regular mid rotation with a bit of time on a wing.

Doc, Jones, Plow
Saad, Weiters, Willo
Walsh, Cripps, Setters
TDK, Oliver, Williams
Martin, Curnow, Fisher
Betts, McKay, Gov
I/C a mix from:
- Experience - Murph, Ed

Would work perfectly for the Saad trade.

7 and future first for Oliver and an early second (23).

One of:
- 23 and 27 for Saad and change (future third ~37-40).
- 23 and 27 to the Bulldogs for 12 and change (anything from the late 3rd round on still equals a point gain for the Dogs), send 12 to Essendon for Saad and change (still future third ~37-40).

I'd also consider splitting 7 for 13 and 16. Using 16 on Saad, and sending 13 and our future first to Melbourne for Oliver with nothing else coming back.

Don't think we'd be getting #23 back. More likely #47 if we're lucky, or #62/63.

You get Oliver done first. Then 27 and Kennedy to Essendon. That should be enough. Maybe throw in the 4th.

I can tell you right now there is no way Melbourne would give us a 2nd rounder or any other pick that isn't a 4th rounder with that trade.

Think he would be a good pickup

Tom Phillips has averaged 27 disposals and booted eight goals in the opening 10 rounds of 2018 to put his name into the All-Australian conversation.
"It's about being more comfortable with the roles I'm playing. I'm flourishing under the guys I'm playing alongside and I put it down to the faith and trust from the coaches," Phillips said.
"The type of player I am with my running and work rate, adding more speed and carrying the footy, breaking the lines and actually being really damaging offensively were my aims.
"I want to keep my defensive mindset but set myself apart from the rest as a midfielder with that offensive flair, trying to set up the play, set up the guys to kick goals and try to get on the end of some myself."

Are there actually clubs that don't do this.

If Oliver comes across it will be for our future first rounder plus the Geelong first rounder that doesn't go to the Bombers for Saad - if they want something else they can have 27.

As you say I can't see them wanting a player we would be happy to part with that would move the needle.

Are we close to doing that deal with the Cats?

I have it from 2 seperate Bulldogs insiders (second hand- but reliable) that both Hunter and Bailey Smith have been told to explore their options after incidents in the hub post finals. Not sure if it's related to throwing Caleb Daniel into the pool??

Hard to believe with Smith, he's a gun.

It's on the Scandals & Rumours Board.

Funny that * supporters on their own board and the main AFL board are sulking that Carlton seem to have leaked the trade offer to embarrass *. A) That club are already an embarrassment for the drug scandal and B) Clubs need to be alerted to their idiotic demands.

Lol.
Everyone knows what Dodo is like. Shouldn't have taken this long for Dodo to embarrass the footy club.
