Geez I hate defending * and I'm clearly not making this post for the likes, but I reckon their AFL.com.au trade period assessment is bloody harsh.

Made us borderline overpay for Saad, got probably market value for Caldwell, brought in a couple of decent prospects (Hind, 2MP) for almost nothing and retained three very high picks (6,7,8) for the mini-rebuild that they're clearly in.

Failed to get Dunkley but I don't think he's quite worth 2 first rounders which the dogs clearly wouldn't budge on.

Sure they had a slew of players wanting to leave but are we grading their crap culture or their trade period here? Not sure that warrants being graded 17th.

Now excuse me I feel really dirty and need to shower.

* have simply gotten worse.
The prime reason for their previous successes, however limited, was their drive from half-back. Now Saad and McKenna are gone.
They've lost their 2 best, albeit injury prone, forwards. And while they were lucky received overs for them, they received a hell of a lot less than they could have gotten last year. That's not a win.
They haven't addressed their needs of big bodied mids or KPP.

Sure, they've added 7 and 8 in a crap-shoot draft, but they're out of the 2nd round next year. And they are going backwards.

The downgrade of picks from 30 to 38 for Fogarty was actually genius by Austin.

Hadn’t looked too much into the academy players and picks tied to those clubs until now.

6 of the 7 picks between 31 -37 are tied to clubs (WB, Syd, Port, Freo, GS) with academy players that will likely get bid on earlier in the draft.

So 38 could drop to 31 or 32 - so basically cost us bugger all.

Well done Austin!
And a big warm welcome to you, Austin's mum! :p

Kemp and Dow have really attached themselves to Walshy and I love it.

Honey, Kemp, Philp will be the first crop IIRC that will be developed under O'Keefe and Luke Power. Have high hopes for the new system and win focus culture.

Quality observation this.

Feel like doing the full draft and letting us now what 48 and 78 may do? ;)

78 is a nothing pick. Austin mentioned that it may come in to the 50s but I can’t see us using it.

48 will probably come in a further 5 spots. Between our picks at 38 and 48 - WB, Ess, Port and Sydney all have picks likely to be used for Academy players.

So our 2nd pick will sit 5 live picks behind our 1st pick.

Watch the AFL announce a pre-season trade period and blame COVID and the list size changes.

I think that was rumoured yesterday on trade radio. If it happens before the draft EFC could make another play for Dunkley which would seem nuts! IMO think they will be hoping we delist Kennedy.

The following has been floated/and or leaked

Only one player needs to be taken in the draft

Three in season rookie drafts

Plus changes to NGA

The AFL seems to have no strategy and chops and changes all the time around this stuff.

People comparing SOS 2015, to Dodo 2020 in terms of draft capital.

Players lost that had some form of value and or continued their careers

2015 - Henderson, Menzel, Yarran, Bell, Hollman

2020 - Daniher, Saad, Fantasia, McKenna, McKernan

2015 v 2020 are similar in the way of KPP's but the biggest difference is the lack of exposure this year across the draft

* don't have a pointy end pick, that's not to say they can't unearth a Weitering, but it is harder. Only benefit they have is being able to take 3 selections in a row, which enables them to add balance of needs

Can't see how that flies - not this year anyway.

You can't give everyone a trade deadline, have clubs then make last minute concessions to get the players they're targeting, and then a fortnight later say "Actually, lets have another trade week!".

I mean...it's the AFL, so they'll do what they want. But it undermines the initial trade deadline completely.

Pick swaps can already continue, so the only reason to add it would be to enable another couple of player swaps. If clubs couldn't do the deal in the last week and a half (after many more weeks of planning and negotiation), then they shouldn't get another chance.

Unless it gets us Oliver. Then it has my full support. ;)

Why not have a crack at the Bont?

Will be interesting to see how the Doggies fare in 2021 - they got Treloar (who may well be unsettled/unhappy given the Pies' schmozzle), Dunkley is clearly far from happy and there's obviously a few dills in the group (Hunter, Smith maybe Libba jnr. still).

I reckon they might not produce what some expect.

Think they will lose a mid or even two, but it won't be Bont.

Dogs did very well yesterday, and have a midfield that is the envy of the rest of the competition on paper, but I can't see how they all fit.

Expect talk of Dunkley, Hunter to ramp up again next year and we should be in the picture for both.

I'm very happy with our trade period, so much so I'm going to buy dumplings for HBF & thylacine60 when I finally get to meet them. I will do this with the knowledge that they are extreme tightarses and will never shout me back!

I'm the bigger man!

Thats very generous.
Make sure you bring plenty of $$$$. We don't muck around when there are dumplings on the table.

This was the perfect year to bring in a readymade player and ignore the draft, and Essendon failed on that front.

If Dunkley was 27 I'd agree the Bombers did the right thing in not sacrificing multiple firsts, but he's 23! He'd have been a presence at the stoppages for the next decade.

Now the Bombers are likely the languish down the bottom for a few years, and Merrett wont want to stick around. I think we'd be silently very happy Essendon didn't stump of the picks, as they aren't going to be anymore competitive next year having lost 2 of their 3 best players.

I suspect we will be in very close contact with Merrett's manager next year, but most importantly we have to make the finals to show some concrete progression to sell to any other OOC players.

The only problem is they are now cashed up, desperate for a KF and McKay is out of contract.
