Feel the same. Can't believe the experience of 5 failed years is the deciding factor that gets you over the line.

Yet he had 2 seasons with far more wins with very average and very old cattle. Makes you think.

I hope Dow stays. If he leaves I would not accept anything less than a top 20 draft pick. Can snag some decent KP depth for that price.

If we got a top 20 pick for Dow we would take it and run.

I've always rated highly people in leadership positions in all walks of life that are intelligent, have a thirst for knowledge and can articulate well. I could be way off the mark here, but Voss has never really struck me as that type of person. Oviously a great player and leader on the field...and nothing personal against the bloke...I'm just not convinced he's the type of person you want as a head coach. Hope I'm wrong.

To be fair Ross Lyon doesn’t really fit that mould either. Usually sounds a couple deep.

It’s hard to gauge a coaches intellect, as much as we all think we’ve got a pretty good indication where they sit. Someone like Teague strikes me as a pretty bright bloke, but wasn’t necessarily ‘footy smart’ and insightful. Off field, when he was relaxed, he was quick-witted and said some clever things.

Stress also impacts IQ in a big way. We know the pressure Teague was under this year, and why he became increasingly blank in his press conferences. Coaches who can remain calm under pressure retain their instincts and have the ability to make good decisions - I suspect this is a strength of Voss’.

I think it’s likely we overstate the tactical side of things from a head coach POV. A lot comes down to the assistants you have around you and the information being fed down to you. Clarko relied a lot on the kind of analytics Rath was feeding him, and made a lot of minor changes over time. He wasn’t solely responsible for the gameplan.

Coaches tend to develop their tactics and philosophies over time and once they’ve got a rough blueprint they tinker with it until it’s sustainable. Someone like Buckley is just about the best example of that. Could clearly coach, but wasn’t considered a good tactician until much later in his career and his gameplan held up against the best. I don’t see Hardwick as especially good tactically either - was a good motivator who knew how to get the most out of his players. He then had someone like Kingsley working on the technical side of the Tigers play.

Can’t see Fagan being too involved in the Lions game day planning either. He essentially coaches like an EPL manager and allows his line coaches to get to work.

Still not sure how Vossy fits in and whether I want him as head coach, but he has strengths that extend beyond his IQ that might be far more beneficial. If he can get full buy in from the squad that’ll go a lot further than appointing a coach with the best ideas but can’t manufacture wins.

I’ve wanted Kingsley from the get go, but I’ve also known it would be tough for him to get the gig.

If it is Voss, though, I won’t be disappointed.

The pressure, however, is going to be immense on him - probably more than it would be with Kingsley. With the Tiggers on the wane there will be an expectation that we smash them in Round 1. Otherwise expect the media doing its “same old Carlton” dance and the Sakc Voss thread appearing here before the match is over.

I can still see Cook going with Kingsley for various reasons. Agreed it would be unlikely.

Im going to absolutely spit it if we lose 3 top ten draft picks sps, Dow and obrien that have been let down by the clubs poor culture and choice of coaches to other club for basically nothing

This narrative is all about not being honest enough to say they aren't good enough.

How are they let down when that very same culture and system has...

Walsh top 5 Brownlow at 21.
McKay Coleman Medalist
Weitering worthy of AA at fullback.
Stocker looking a lock for 200 games.

Maybe it's not what you cite as the reason for their inability to rise to a consistent level but the players themselves.

We got the picks wrong can also be a reason.

How good would it be if someday, in the not too distant future, the Carlton Respects initiative could lead to a female member on our coaching panel.

Or the club can just appoint people on their merits. As it should be. Their gender or skin colour is irrelevant to whether they can do the required job.

According to SOS we dont need any midfielders. And we dont need Hewitt cause we have Ed. Omg. No wonder our list is not balanced enough. He just wanted nice boys to be around his boys. Not bad influences, no rebels. No Extroverts. The list goes on.

And yes SOS was one of my favourite players, but I dont think he is the best list manager around.

He's wrong. we've needed midfielders every year since he joined as list manager. We still need them now.

Hewett is exactly what we need right now. Sure 1 or 2 of SOS' other picks may become that down the track (I doubt it) the price is right (free) and the contract is ideal (cheap). 100% a correct pick up.

Me too. I trust Parkin, Diesel, Sayers and Cook
This is just an uneducated guess but maybe one of the key criterion was to set the standards, build the culture, drive continuous improvement...MUCH MORE than tactical nous (which you can get from assistants)...Caracella at Richmond for example
Personally, we need to sort out the culture first...the other stuff comes later
No team has just won a flag because their coach employed a super duper gameplan (it helps I know)...but they win a flag because they believe in the gameplan and understand the proceses required to implement it...thereby allowing the results to look after itself
Welcome the VossWagen
100% Culture trumps strategy. Get the culture right and the rest is sooooo much easier.

There were a lot of things that went wrong with Brisbane during Voss' time There, that I don't think we're all his responsibility as the club did continue to capitulate for a few years after him and a lot would have appeared to be off field stuff similar to what we have seen with ourselves recently.

To his credit he has historically admitted his mistakes, if anything he went into a head coaching role with almost 0 coaching experience period (something that will never happen again at AFL level again). Has served for several years as a top level assisstant and if he was ever going to be ready for a second crack now is probably the time.

With the best support network and assisstants (as it's a group effort now) he won't bomb.
