If they're not 198+ I don't really see what they bring we don't already have coverage for.
Tom Stewart is 190cm.
Dane Rampe is 188cm.
Dylan Grimes is 194cm.
Nick Vlaustin is 187cm.
Jordan Ridley is 195cm.
Tom McCartin is 191cm.
Noah Balta is 194cm.
Sam Collins is 194cm.
Jake Lever is 195cm.
Steven May is 193cm.

Do you want me to keep going?

Each of these players would give us something we lack, either from an athletic, experience, or difference standpoint. Raw height does not immediately entail use.

We have Weitering to take the Hawkins, Kennedys and the Lynches of the world. We need an intercept defender and a second tall. You do not need to be massive to be an intercept defender, and you do not need to be massive to be a second tall.

Should go best available with our first pick in the PSD. History has shown that barely any decent players come out of there so getting a guy who can actually be AFL standard should be the priority (Brad Lloyd said as much).

If we need to cover injuries should put an extra player on the LTI and take a versaltile KPP with our 2nd pick.

Not sure we don’t need either.

This week we’re playing:

Weiters (KPD)
Kemp (3rd tall)
Plow (3rd/med)
TDK (Ruck/KPF)
Charlie (shorter/mobile KPF?)
Jack (3rd tall & relief ruck)

Leaving the two developing project players, Mirkov (pure tap ruck) & Akeui (3rd tall def). The big fella is closer than Dom, but realistically both aren’t ready and shouldn’t play this year.

So unavailable is:

KPD: Young (HSP), McDonald (long term), Jones (retired)
3TD: Marchbank (returnes to VFL), Gov (long term), Parks (long term)
Ruck: Pitto (long term)
KPF: McKay (6 weeks) [McDonald]

Next year could see Parks & McDonald join Jones on the ‘gone’ list. Gov’s got another year and Marchbank will be dependent on if he can avoid another long term injury (I’ve got everything crossed right now…).

Adding a KPD and KPF/Ruck would be perfect, ideally in that 20-25 age bracket and without any significant injury history…
Good post mate. I dont argue with any of your points. I was talking more about next year. I doubt this year is flag year.
when they're all back available we have enough is all I was meaning.

If the dice fall our way, this year is flag year, and might be the only flag year for the next two decades. We have to take out chances when we get them, because luck won't always go our way.

Who thought Richmond was ready in 2017, or The Dogs could overcome injuries the year before?

No one from the state leagues in that size range is likely to offer much we don't already have on our list.
A key forward and ruck are the gaps in our list that get exposed when 1-2 guys go down.

Nah imo we are in a position with our list to draft for needs now. We need to fill in the gaps.

What's the point of drafting best available if it's a half back flanker for example when we have Doc/saad/williams/newman/stocker/Boyd?

It would be a waste to draft them and unfair on the player who has virtually no chance of playing senior footy.

There will be someone out there if we look hard enough. A guy like Jack Hayes who Saints took as a SPP this year.

What luck? We have been cursed which is the opposite of luck going our way? I do still believe we can go deep this year and possibly all the way. Just gotta do a 2008 hawks...minus the rush behinds...

Dare to Dream but not likely. Right now we are missing the 2 most important players on our list
A Health
B Fitness

Was Hayes training with the Saints before selection? I would have thought sometime might be needed to get the right level of fitness and familiarity with teammates and gameplay. Time to impact might vary.

It's an interesting one, I like the idea of glass-mcasker but as Jeremias said any MSD draftee should improve both AFL and VFL teams - it's a position I hadn't considered and a lot more forward thinking than most suggestions that are primarily about covering gaps right now.

sure hope that happens for us

This. You’re ready when you’re ready.

The next 3 weeks might prove me full of shite, but I’m feeling that this season there isn’t a team we can’t seriously compete with, especially if the personnel are there.

Stewart doesn't play on the 2 tallest forwards, De Koning, Kolodjashnij/Bilcavs their 2 main defenders

Rampe similar, both McCartin's play taller

Grimes has leap, same with Balta, Vlastuin would get spanked by a McKay/King

Ridley, well * are undersized, hence their ladder position

Collins is just a flesh magnet, does really well for his height, but no wonder they play Thompson after so many years out

Lever is a 3rd tall, May is the exception, like Glass, has speed, strength and leap, yet Petty gets the tallest forward

Weigh it all up, no real requirement in terms of height, but the way the game is headed, I would say 196cm would be a minimum requirement

Unless they’re 195.4 cm but can actually play the position … lol

I answer that with the same thing all coaches since 2005 when Sydney won under Roos have known: that two players, no matter how much smaller, slower, less agile, with a worse leap, will beat the best player most of the time.

True, in part, but that was 16 years ago
Every single premiership side since has used an outnumber in back half whenever possible, and every single side since has tried to give their forwards one on ones.

Might be 16 years ago, but it's treated like a truism by coaches everywhere.
