Disclaimer: I haven't seen much of McStay in the past 12 months, but....

I can't see what the big hoopla is. He's a reasonable KPP, who will kick 25-30 goals a year and can provide backup at CHB if needed.

Not sure where these five-year, 600-700k offers are coming from. IMO the only reason he is getting mentioned is he's an FA and the journos salivate over any players that haven't signed (repeating basically the same article 100 times) and his management is probably playing along for shits and giggles.

He'll re-sign with Brisbane and anyone that throws more than 3-4 years or >450-500k at him has rocks in their heads...
He would actually solve a lot of our problems as he is pretty good at both ends.

Agree though that the figures quoted are too high. I would prefer to pay him $550k than Karl Amon though. Great cover for KPF and KPD and pretty much solves two of our major issues.

I'm sure Nick Austin and team can do much better than James Stewart.
They convinced the Bulldogs to part ways with Lewis Young for a pick in the 50s, remarkable.

We're going to be strapped for cash and trade currency in the next few years and going for cheap moneyball acquisitions to fill depth roles is crucial.
Agreed...I heard Errol Flynn is gettable.....:D

But Would any tall forward good enough to make a difference be willing to play in the 2nd for most of the year?

On SM-F926B using BigFooty.com mobile app

Yes I think so...players who are already only depth for their own teams most likely.

Young is an example, when he came we still had Jones and a healthy Omac.

Though no one is usurping Charlie and Harry. Not JSOS either as forward ruck.

But some players may prefer to be depth for us...and can play a role in an injury crisis.

James Stewart has conclusively proven himself time and again not to be an A.F.L. standard footballer.
I get your point that we need a player prepared to play plenty of V.F.L. whilst harry and Charlie are playing but you also need someone who can contribute if required.
Not sure if James Stewart is that man.

Probably not no.1 target but if other targets fail and he's available I'd be keen.

Versatile enough to play forward, back and pinch hit ruck. Replaces Omac on the list as an immediate depth option.

He's no match winner, but a capable role player in an injury crisis. Like the Collingwood game, he would have been handy just to have a big target and not have Cripps rucking.

That list didn't fill me with confidence in terms of "stocked tall forwards".

I think we saw how important it was having Harry come back. Kemp wasn't put into the team to play forward and I dont think he has played a seniors game forward and you wouldn't pin your hopes on TDK being the next in line.

We could use another tall forward, thats all I'm saying.
Imagine if McGovern could actually stay on the park.

Watch him every week living up here. One of my few social outlets is the footy so keep a close eye on the Pops.

Pretty much spot on.

He's great cover at both ends of the ground. An even better club man.

Someone will give him overs. I'm thinking someone like Collingwood. He'll play a handy role for whoever it is but you can get much better bang for your buck.

If nobody gives him overs he'll stay - he's not leaving a flag contender for the same cash - unless there's something family related in Melbourne he needs to move back for.

We hit the draft. Get in a youngster to develop. In the mean time, there's always older near retirement KP's looking to premiership chase for lower end salary who can provide injury cover. Maybe you look at a (example only, don't shoot me) Josh Walker or even a Ben McEvoy.

Not interested in Amon, have options for the wing.

We will be focusing on KPP, ruck.

Have salary room for 1 elite player or 3 good players.
Thanks Faucon.
So the GWS midfielder interest wasn't reciprocated?

I thought Vossy was supposed to be keen on Amon because of their relationship at Port, so perhaps it was just the media trying to create headlines as usual....

Amon only really had 1 big year last year I reckon...outside that he's just been pretty good, but he's not a game changer.

Think we can find better, cheaper options elsewhere. A bit more improvement in the guys already on our list and the output might be not that different to an Amon anyway.

I keep saying this. I do not want Amon.

Watch the end of our game earlier in the season.

Watch how he uses the ball on their final forward offensive in a winnable game.

This isn't a once off. This is consistently the player that he is.

He is skilled. However, he is not the quick thinking, game changer we need from the wing.

If that rumor is true then I'm thankful.

Have salary room for 1 elite player or 3 good players.

Please explain how this is possible considering

1. Our recent big money spend

2. Over the next two years (this and next) we have Stocker, Charlie, Harry, Jack, TDK, Lewis Young, Docherty, Fisher and a number of other important best 22 players coming out of contract.

I just don't see how we have significant room in our salary cap before we start reaching a choke point.

We haven't yet reached premiership team status where players take unders to keep the band together.

3 players on 500k+ (what a good player would be worth) seems extravagant.

Are you saying we ALREADY have options for wing on the list or?????

If we do please tell us…

We have options in the sense that there's about five guys competing for two spots so if one or two drop form or injury we can cover via Next Man Up™️.
Compared to ruck and tall forward where if we lose one we have to play one short - no pun intended.

It's an interesting discussion however because a very good winger walks straight in to the 18 whereas an extra tall forward might have to wait for opportunity.

Not a rumour as such but was wondering what ever happened to Alex Johnson - ex-Swan who had 4 or 5 knee reco's and who'd played at the Northern Bullants.

Found this on Wiki - In 2020 season, he signed for the old boys' club of his alma mater, Old Xaverians, but suffered yet another ACL injury in preseason training shortly before the season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Poor guy was cursed !!

Pecking order right at the moment seems to be;
1) equal Newnes and LOB
3) Cottrell
4) Setterfield
5) Hayes

So yes we do have options. Not necessarily great ones. Worth remembering that LOB and Cottrell are young and have improved significantly from 2021 snd 2022. Whether they can keep improving is the big question.

I wonder whether we’d be having a conversation with Tomlinson considering prior interest and struggling to get a game at Melbourne.

He's struggling to fully recover from the injury that shelved him last year. He may not be physically up to it anymore.

At 28 and with our depth of medium defenders (he's 193cm, same height as Kemp who we struggle to squeeze in) I think we're set.

Cripps and Walsh have entered the discussion

It's amazing that they have. I don't think we can expect that of everybody.

If the finances are there then that's mind-blowing.

However, I think we're reaching the point where we're looking to bring in those last pieces who are willing to take unders to be part of 17+. It takes special people to do that.

I reckon Charlie and Harry will stay loyal. Will get bigger offers elsewhere but have toiled too long to depart on the doorstep of the promised land.

That seems to exclude someone like McStay.
