It's hard to compare but I would argue that GWS gave up similar for Heath Shaw.

They swapped Taylor Adams who was a pick 13 midfielder progressing nicely for a 28 year old Heath Shaw.

I would argue GWS paid overs in order to secure some experience and leadership from Shaw.

Also seems to be a genuine win-win trade for both clubs.

But some wise man said end of discussion, so....

Giving up pick 8 for Saad was over paying. In my opinion he is over rated and does fu** all. All he does is run for the sake of running and just kicks and hopes.

This is so wrong it hurts.

Saad actually rarely just bombs it long. When I watch him, he goes for a run but always looks for an option and usually hits them. He pulls his kicks and found short targets often. He's good at kicking across his body.

I dont think you even watch our games.

Before Saad came to carlton this was also my opinion and why I didn’t really want him. He would get the ball run 20m and then kick it 50.

Since coming to carlton, my view has mostly changed. He’s better by foot than I gave him credit for. However he still frequently does that but so do all players if there’s no option ahead.

Giving up pick 8 for Saad while slightly overpaying, he was one of our best this year.

However my biggest issue with Saad is his defending. It’s been brought up many times but commentators about not buying into team defence. He’s not alone here btw but moving forward I want to see him owning his defencive responsibilities

Saad is a good chance to finish top-5 in the B&F. When was the last time one of our draftees in the 6-10 range did that? Jordan Russell in 2010?
Saad is and will be great value for us.... Deadly long left foot weapon that hits a target most times that makes me go..wow..

Put them in any top 4 side and they'll be different players, if we can start winning and controlling games more where they get more opportunity I'm sure they'll become very handy players.

This may be proven correct but surely that is a very navy and white way to look at it?

Why aren't all the top 10 draft picks given to the top 4 sides then? The whole point of the system is the lower clubs get the best players and they lead the charge up the ladder i.e. Hodge, Lewis, Franklin, Roughead.

Taking Carlton out of it - are the Gold Coast relying on Rowell, Anderson, Rankine, King, Luko, Bowes, Ainsworth (Miller, Flanders, Weller all picks 11-13) to take them up the ladder? Or is it supposed to be the likes of Burgess, Holman, Collins and Ellis that take them to the top 4, and then the top picks add cream when they start winning?

A rebuild will stagnate based on top 10 picks like Dow, SPS, Setterfield (pick 6 originally and we bid 5) and O'Brien not delivering to expectations. I'm not picking on individuals, but collectively the failure of this group (or at least some) to "come on", is a big part of why we finished 13th in year 6 of the rebuild.

It's great that we are getting Hewett and Cerra, but as others have said, these are not the type of players we should need to be adding at this stage.

As you probably can tell mate, i only look at things in navy and white, so some of the things i say may not be on the ball.

Cerra done on day one? That would be excellent
Whilst I'd love that, and it's not beyond the realms of possibility, I suspect the possibility of the Jordan Clark trade to Freo might slow things down. I can understand Freo trying to maximize their trade/draft hand. So I wouldn't be surprised if it takes a few days, even though no one is being ridiculously difficult. But I expect a media narrative to hype things up.

Kicks and hopes? What? He is the best kick in the team. It's his runs and kicks that catches opposition defensive setup off guard.

I'm not going to go into whether we overpaid for Saad as it is very subjective and will also depend on what happens in the future. If he is still a valued member of the team a number of years into the future then no-one will be too concerned with the initial price.

Before coming to the team, I thought he was mainly an offensive player with little defensive capability. Maybe that was the case but I thought that there were numerous occasions this year where he surprised me by his defensive efforts such as tackling and spoiling. He was by no means just a run and carry player even if that is a major part of his game. He was definitely one of our better players this year.

All AFL trades are completed on day one, but Chief makes them wait until 5 mins before deadline on the last day before they can go live.

That way we can fill the void with tens of thousands of ridiculous hypotheticals, list management manifestos and incessant hand-wringing and posturing.

Pretty sure.... :p

Debating whether we paid too much and get screwed for Saad (and any player) is such a waste of time, and is pointless really.

This can really only be determined at the completion of a players career, where not just the price paid (which we know), but the outcomes achieved (won't know for 6+ seasons) are evaluated.

Premiership success, or lack of it..BnF placings, All Aus squad, influence on the squad from a culture perspective etc...these are all things that need to be factored in before deciding if a player's cost was 'too high'..

Melbourne were pretty much laughed at when they coughed up 2 x first round picks for Jake Lever.
Now part of arguably, the best defensive duo in the comp, and a Premiership player.. Could it still be argued that they'd overpaid?
Lever's career is far from over and im pretty sure anyone with half a brain knows the answer to that..

Oliver Hanrahan? Why?

Is he anything more than a speculative small fwd?
