or it's the Club's nice way of saying Paddy is excess to current needs....

The earlier indications were that Paddy's preference was to stay.

If Austin is now stating that Paddy is exploring his options, then something has changed.

Match that up with rumours that we were shopping Dow and Setters with the intent of trying to trade whichever got us the best return, it would appear that Dow has garnered interest and Carlton/Austin is being allowed to manage the narrative. It's also a better narrative for Dow to be exploring his options than it is to be offered up as steak knives.

Hope this means we retain Setters. Feel as if it was one or the other.

Good luck to Paddy and I hope he finds a club that will allow him to play to his strengths. Think with the right role he can still become a damaging mid.

We will def keep Setters. Happy with that and expected...Setters played more games this year and is more versatile.

It sounds like we are the ones who asked Dow to explore his options, not Dow wanting out.

Austin interviewed short time ago, stated Acres should get done later in day. Freo's LM confirmed somewhere around 3rd rounder will get it done. Paddy Dow on the trade table. Austin said (sic) they are open to, and assess other trades if they are likely to benefit the club.

Good on him, Setters is also too good to be stuck in the VFL.
Set 'em free, they both deserve to play regular AFL.

Can’t let both go, that would be stupid list management

Stupid list management, but absolutely fair to the players. Looking like keeping Setters as the priority, but hard to see him getting the opportunities he deserves.

Actually I think we are seeing a spread of contract lengths depending on player.

The whole front and back loading of contracts has become much like managing a bond portfolio with different durations. The only problem with applying similar methodologies is that unlike a bond portfolio - there are liquidity constraints in managing a player list due to contracts making player movement sticky. I think minimum salary cap spend is particularly onerous and silly on Clubs who are in rebuilding mode - but at least front-ended payments offer a decent incentive for players to come to a rebuilding side if they are so inclined. Martin / McGovern are two examples that come to mind at Carlton - just bad luck both have had more than usual expected injuries negatively impacting on their ability to contribute.

Harry / Charlie / Cripps are like 10 yr bond bets players with a bit to prove but showing enough to warrant further time are like 1-2 year bonds whilst the rest become short term cash rate type bets. A decent but not match winning type role player is likely to be interested in maximising the length of their contract rather than short term cash - so the 3 year type deal Kennedy was put on fits for players like him.

So to your point, the lower risk expected higher return players get more time- which also provides them with a contractual in built call option on the rising player payment regime in place - offsetting any near term lower cost to help the Club type argument.

Hopefully that is how list managers are approaching the payments side of list management - not clear that all Clubs are as well managed as they could be as far as that stuff goes. Collingwood got themselves into quite a fix mismanaging duration.

Will only take a couple of players signed long term (AFL generally, not Carlton) to get bad injuries and then all of a sudden we may see a change in philosophy once again.

Docherty is a defender. He pinch hit through the midfield out of necessity late in the year. Carroll is still unproven but does look promising. Our premiership window is opening up and we need players who are big bodied and ready to step in should we lose a player to injury. On that note, even if Setterfield is a depth player, we can’t afford to lose guys like that for a token draft pick.

Not to mention, Kennedy and Hewett both have injury clouds over them. Hewett has back issues during his time with the Swans and that has resurfaced with us shouldering more midfield minutes. Kennedy has a Lisfranc injury which is notoriously a bugger to get over.

Those wanting to move Setters on.. that’s fine so long as we’re getting a ready made player in return. A third round draft pick does not improve us. If anything it moves the needle backwards. The successful teams have depth and guys that are prepared to buy in, work hard to get a senior opportunity and take it.
Your injury point is well made but if there is an injury docherty will pinch hit in the midfield. Setters is great but he will not play 10 games, so if we have a draft target, take it and improve the list. It comes down to the offer andwhether we have a kid in mind. If we are not openminded-we will just end up with an unbalanced list

That's the big risk on the table for sure. However I don't think things will change much - match winners in key positions are a rare commodity and take more time to develop etc etc ...not so easily replaceable.

Finals and finals wins and genuine sustainable contention - will see Carlton being able to draw a developed player or two ( if not a match winning type) in areas of need going forward - that is the other factor in how much you have to pay and who might be interested.

eg Cameron to Geelong was a huge coup - same as Buddy to Sydney - despite the 'cost' you do a deal like that without blinking.

I would have like Ollie wines a couple of years ago (or Oliver which was loser than many understand) or Tarranto this year to add proven class to the midfield. William's faux move to midfield duties not woking out ( so far?) was a big disappointment to me.

I'm a tad concerned about Hewett and Kennedy's injuries - we need Carroll/Cuningham/Kemp to come on...

Based on his late season form he's potentially positioned himself as the first cab off the rank for injury cover in the midfield, so every chance he gets 10+ games next year. If his performances in those games stack up then it means the other mids have to maintain a high standard as well, or risk being the one to fall out when an injured player returns.

We were missing at least one of Cripps, Walsh, Cerra, Hewett and Kennedy in the following rounds: 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11, 14, 15, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23.

If Setters' back end of 2021 was as good as he showed late this year, then that would have been 14 games where he's first choice to get the call up.

There's also scope to have him come in to replace someone like Acres, LOB or Cottrell if injured, given we could elect to push a Walsh or Cerra out to cover a wing if we know there's a solid midfielder replacing them.

There is a trove of sports science research that state in professional sport, with small margins, the difference between winning and losing is mental. This is not a game played by robots. It is absurd to ignore the facts

All good then, we have a sports psychologist like every other side

There is also plenty of research that states team continuity and cohesion is one of the biggest factors to team success

I think Boyd and Williams are just what we need as defenders, which should push Doc into the midfield rotations.
Makes it even harder for Setters and Carrol to play regular AFL games.

edit. Fisher might struggle as well.

Not hard to see him playing 15 - 18 games next season. Automatic selection if an inside on baller is injured, back up winger and plenty of games as sub.

Also from the last couple of games he could genuinely put pressure on the incumbents for a starting position.

We are not in the business of being nice to every player. We are here as a club to be successful. I would be saying "Will, we liked what you did late last year, fight for your opportunities but stick around and play for a successful club. If you are not happy with your opportunities this year we will let you go to the club of your choice next year".

With H locked away for the next 7 years it’s time to hit up the North boards with ridiculous hypothetical trades for Ben grossly undervaluing him to join his brother at Carlton…the poor North fans are on their knees at the moment…I reckon we could break a few of their posters!!!

The way I see it with Setterfield, he is a proven AFL quality option if played in his preferred position.

And with our injury history / pattern / luck there will be plenty of opportunities for him there in 2023.

Additionally, if you have 5 midfield spots is it not a bad thing to have 6 bona fide AFL options to keep everyone hungry and motivated?

Only way we trade him is if either he wants out or we get an offer too good to refuse.

Dow on the other hand, just get whatever you can and move on.

There's not much interest in Setterfield, that's why we have offered him only one year and why Dow is up for trade. We think we can get a late second rounder/early third from the right club.

Would be a spectacular result and would allow us to package some picks to improve our hand. Going in with 10, 28 and something between 20 and 30 from packaging up LJ compo, Dow Pick and our 4th rounder.

10, 25 (Gold coast has 3 2nd round picks) and 28 would be a lovely draft hand.

On media links to Fischer McAsey, Lachie Sholl and any other business:

“We did some work on Fischer early days, but we’re not going to go there. There was never a conversation [about Lachie Sholl] at any level.

“Outside of [Acres], we’re really committed to the draft: we’ve had three national draft picks in the last two years and been pretty active trading, so it’s time for us to go to the draft and get some kids back in.”

On Will Setterfield:

“Will is out of contract. He’s a required player and we’d like to retain him, but he’s free to explore his options.”

On the prospect of a trade for Blake Acres:

“We’ll see. We’ve had some pretty good dialogue with Fremantle up until now: we’ll catch up with them this morning and see what happens.

“Blake is probably the major one for us [from an acquisition perspective]. He plays the wing role, which is really important for us and something we’re trying to address. He’s a big body, 26 years old and 120 games of experience.”
My read of Austin's body language is:
- Happy for Dow to go,
- Not happy with the Setters situation,
- There is something going on in the TDK situation.
