If they don’t stand up this year could see us trading a…

JSOS
🦆s for cover…
Kemp
Plowman
McGovern

Along with delisting a few…

Quite possibly. Someone on good coin who isn’t performing might get shunted out (Zac Williams, everyone is looking at you), salary-dump style.

Broadly, the list is in good shape. Up to the coaching staff and footy department in general to earn their keep now. Extract performance. Talent is there.

Might just be me but the annual equating of picks to points does my head in. It's a way of administrating trades, not a realistic assessment of relative value. Like, pick 1 is worth more than however many third rounder make up the equivalent number of points.
Mine too. I don't mind points sometimes as a sort of guide but nothing more than that. Just because the points work out doesn't mean teams will have any interest in it.

If there's a player you have your eye on at say 21 you're not trading it away for 34 and 38 because they points say you come out ahead. You'd rather get the player you want.

Hasn't just about every reference to points been in the context of trading up with a club who have a F/S or academy bid to match (ie. Brisbane)?

Cause that's the scenario when it is absolutely relevant and appropriate to use.

Of our Best 22 for 2023, roughly 12 members will be trade ins from other teams.

Not sure how this compares to other teams but the number seems fairly high. We have very few best 22 team members that have been actually drafted post 2016.

For me, the drafting record of Brodie and Agresta is dismal and a fairly big cause for concern going forward. Good trading is masking what a poor drafting performance it has been over time.

I'm very happy with the work Austin has done, but this part of the club ought to have been freshened up a little bit. I'm disappointed it hasn't been, seems so obvious.
I can understand criticism of Brodie, but Agresta?

Geez...as low as my opinion of st kilda are even I thought they could do better than Zaine Cordy.

We have the top tier talent. Probably more of it than most other clubs.

We need the lesser likes to stand up to take us forward next year.

Looking at:
Fisher
Cottrell
LOB
Durdin
Motts
Owies
Carroll

We know what we are going to get from the top enders. But if that above group provides 10% more output, that's what's really going to take us places

Honestly the biggest thing is better run with injuries.

Not having key players for long periods really hurt, including not having 3 of our top 5 mids in the crucial last 2 games of the season and missing huge portions of our backline most of the year. I wonder how we would have gone if Gov, Weitering and Williams played the entire year. If Walsh and Hewett played vs Collingwood we likely win.

Guys like Pitto, Owies, Gov and Weitering weren't the same when they came back either.

Even if one of Hewett, Kennedy or Walsh play, we win....

Premiership sides are draft based. No more than 4 to 6 from other clubs. If you can not develop your own players, it is hard to win a flag

Point made then

We'll start 2023 with roughly 12 of our best 22 from other clubs

It's disproportionate and not a good indicator
Probably a factor why they are going back to the draft this year to bring in some young talent, l have probably 9-10 which is not far off Geelong's number.

Who are the 12, out of curiosity?

Backline: Docherty, Newman, Saad, Young, McGovern, Marchbank, Williams (Depth: Boyd, Plowman, Durdin)
Ruck: Pitto
Midfield: Kennedy, Cerra, Hewett, Acres (Depth: Setterfield)
Forward line: Martin

13 plus a few probable depth options.

That being said, I think Cookie is talking out his arse. The fact that he'd gone with "no more than 4-6 players" and had that immediately shot down with this year's premiers is a good indication that it's not a researched position, but a guesstimate.

There may still be truth to it. Having more success in developing your own players means they learn your system from the beginning of their career, they learn their teammates' games, you build your gameplan around what they offer over a longer period etc. Teams with a strong development program also tend to get better value from later picks (see Geelong this year).

However, that's not to say that a team with more players traded in can't win a flag. No way you can put a number on it though.

Agreed.
We’ll go as far as the improvement in our wings and half forwards allow us.
We have the elite talent but our structures broke down because the wings couldn’t do the two way running to be effective and the half forwards weren’t damaging enough, be it hitting the scoreboard or tackling pressure.
