Haynes looked like he was near cooked this season personally.

Didn't watch a heap of GWS this year, so I'll defer to you there. My first thought was "hasn't he been injury prone lately", but his last three seasons were 17, 21 and 17 games respectively, which isn't hugely worrying.

As I said though, I doubt the club really consider him anyway given our current stocks down back. Had we called time on Marchbank, it might have been a different story.

Not if we have something to say about it....
We were flying ..8 wins from 10 games ..then we fell apart ..don't wanna make any excuses but we did have some key injuries to our personnel..we are capable of anything ..let's just make the finals first yeh ..gotta finish top 4 to win a premiership it's extremely difficult from 5-8 to win it the way the game is played today

You don’t think adding one of the best running wingman with elite foot skills isn’t something we need over a ruckman who couldn’t secure his spot as first ruck and still we are yet to know if he is indeed a ruckman or a forward?

He definitely wasn't that player this year. Finished outside the top 10 in the b&f of a bottom 4 team, and he only finished 10th in 2021. Turns 29 next season and owed massive dollars into his mid 30s. Could end up being an absolutely horrific contract

Short answer NO

Any truth to the rumour Dow/Setters/Pick for Bailey Smith?

Whitfield is an amazing footballer no doubt we all see that, amazing aerobic capacity, sublime kicking skills everything we need desperately and with our champion midfield extractors he'd be a pleasure to watch gliding on the park.
I wouldn't trade TDK thought, he truly could be exceptional in a few years.

Yeah, some blame the recruiters for picking the wrong kids, some the coaches for screwing their development. Personally, I just don't think we had a suitable high performance culture at the time, the fans were asked for patience, but I suspect that filtered through to the players as well who became inured to losses. And when I say players, I mean both the draftees themselves who were just sticking it out and expecting it to all come together at some point, and the leaders who seemed to have no burning desire to push the side back up the ladder. It was a lot of people just sitting around and waiting for a switch to be flicked.

That's probably an overly simplified and somewhat harsh take. I'm sure the players hated losing, I'm sure they were training hard, but I don't think the low expectations did anyone any favours in terms of creating a competitive culture. We expected to lose, so we did.
I don't disagree with this, but it didn't start out that way.

In 2016 we were 6 and 5 leading into the Queens Birthday weekend. We had bounced back from losing the first 4. You can't do that if you're not 100% fair dinkum.

The term "mentally weak" has been debated a lot around here. I don't think any AFL footballers can be mentally weak, but you can have varying levels of mental drive. Players in that team above like Rowe, Thomas, Armfield, Wright and Simmo were very mentally driven. That side had over-achieved to that point, largely on the back of trying their arses off.

I think a number of players we drafted from then on, were simply not highly mentally driven to be the best they could be. Not everyone can be a Walsh, but we had too many that were down the other end of the scale. JSOS has been there the whole way through from 2015, and has nowhere near the God-given attributes of all the first round picks. There is an obvious reason why he has developed along the way and a lot of others haven't.

Bowes, Bruhn and Ollie Henry after winning the premiership? This upsets me.

3 talented young players to go along with the likes of SDK, Close, Holmes & Stengle. Suddenly their youth would look really good and they'll regenerate on the run, most likely still contending other the next few years.

Let’s see. 2 + 2 does always add up to 4.

Still a heavy reliance on Selwood Danger Hawkins and Smith.

Bright young players can suddenly look ordinary without the older champs to buffer them.

Whitfield is currently recovering from his second ankle surgery (on the same ankle). He’s back living down the peninsula with his parents while he recovers, I see him every now and then at my local gym.
In his prime and fit he’s a gun. The concern is the ankle ongoing. That plus the dollars he’s on.
Genuinely nice bloke though.
