Agree the AFL events are way too sensational & over hyped, marketing and promotion take priority.
I think they're trying to turn it into what the American sports do with their drafts, which won't work imo.

There'll always be some mild-moderate interest in watching the draft for fans who are more keen followers, but the American sports is a huge event because the kids are national stars for a year or 2 before even going pro. Here majority of fans have no idea who the kids are until someone at AFL.com.au tells them that this kids decent.

There's little fanfare or excitement in that.

I think also the fact their drafts are so unpredictable compared to ours also helps. By the time the draft comes around most phantom drafters have pretty much sorted the entire first round. There might be the odd slip up but mostly they're around the mark, over in the US, particularly in the NFL, it's an absolute crapshoot as to who is picking who, even without the trading that goes on on top of that. It's real unknowns.

National Stars, unknown picks, unexpected and massive crowds giving fanfare and genuine live reaction trades and picks all add to the theatre.

I must admit as someone who follows it a bit I don't bother watching the draft, I just follow it online. I already know all the kids (in the first round and around our pick, more or less), and who we're likely to take, so it's just keeping an eye on it more than anything. However I love watching the NFL draft.

I don’t mind the slow pace for the first round. Those guys are the players draft watchers are aware of and have an active interest in where they end up.

It’s when you get to picks in the 40’s, Kevin Sheehan comparing any skinny 6’2 mid to Pendlebury and any mildly athletic ruck to Paddy Ryder is starts to drag.

Kevin Sheehan needs to come up with some new descriptions for his boys - if I hear these boys are “ripping young lads” one more time…….

:p

Yup agree, it’s scripted and pretty predictable, Sheehan has contributed a great deal to AFL football promotion but has stagnated a bit, last few years.
Perhaps it’s time for a fresh injection a new approach and younger mindset may freshen things up , positive change is always healthy

Not true - his commentary may be a bit repetitive but he's damn good at his primary function.

A Geelong ITK from elsewhere has suggested that if a Vic club drafts Busslinger that he guarantees Joel Selwood will follow as an assistant coach and suggested that it'd most likely be us.

Any additional context to how those 2 are linked to each other? Very strange rumour that one
Crazy story actually, he was an Auskicker of the week all the way back in 2008 and on Grand Final day when he was there to present medals he met Joel and he's been mentoring Jed ever since.

Not sure the relationship is strong enough to warrant Joel dropping everything to coach at the club he's drafted to, but there's a connection at least.

Sceptical (to say the least) that Selwood would base career decisions over that kind of relationship.
