Club clearly does not rate O’Brien or Cotters if we are chasing Howe even as a rookie.
I can understand the focus on an 18yo outside runner … but Howe is 26yo. He ain’t getting any better than what he’s shown at Hawthorn.

He is a different type to those outside runners.

Poor man’s Matt Kennedy.

Think you can bag him without bagging our blokes?

From Riley Beveridge in 2017:

HE IS the unheralded Hawk shutting down the game’s best midfielders.

And he is also one of the young men at the forefront of Hawthorn’s mini turnaround towards the end of an otherwise disappointing 2017 campaign, leading the club’s bright future.

What message do you think it would send to Cotters and O’Brien if we recruited Howe after we just traded for Acres?
I don't know how other people think. You're quite brilliant, Shane.

Howe: I was happy to rotate half back flankers through the wing.

Zerohanger: With a focus on midfield, Hawthorn's draft planning should also be hoping to bolster their outside options after the departures of wing options Daniel Howe and Liam Shiels this off-season.

Hawthorn FC: Daniel Howe was the sub last week but has been named on a wing and can cover the ground pretty well.

Daniel Howe looks to have cemented himself in Hawthorn's best 22, locking down a prosperous wing/half back role.

Howe would be OK as depth.

Just traded Setterfield, Dow clearly not rated and may depart end of next year. Likely also E. Curnow’s last season too.

Clearly had some issues with inside mid depth the back half of last season. Falls away quickly after our best 3 or 4.

At worst helps raise the training standard and has form shutting down some gun mids.

He's an option in an emergency, that's why his name is there.

I understand the risk with McGovern and Marchbank, that's another part of why we should invest in the draft. Not every draftee is 70 kgs wringing wet, though the ability to play AFL early shouldn't be something that sees you ignore talent. There's also mature and delisted players to consider, but the key issue is that we had both of them contracted until 2023.

We keep offering 2 year, even 3 year deals to mediocre options, and while it's not as bad as the Ratten era, that was certainly one of key factors of that time being a failure.
Logic is sound - but everyone has a different view on who is and who isn't a good player and worth the 2-3 years contract. I would say that the Club is about 90% there in being able to dictate contracts to players - people can agree or disagree on the value of time given to some of the fringe players this year - still '23 sees quite a few ' has got great potential if he could stay fit' types on their last chance or last year of contract...

I'm happy to give the Club another year at least before I can start thinking negatively about list management. IMO the list is short 4-5 AFL players in key roles ( and which isn't ? ) hopefully 2-3 are ticked off this year by players like Marchbank/Cuningham and McGovern...Martin needs to lift to his potential as well as stay on the park - so he can go into that list too.

The list we have now is pretty much at the beginning of its flag window if the list that was being paid for was delivering even 80% of it value - and that is the issue I am concerned about - heart says surely these blokes come good or at least 3 of them - that is like 3 A grade recruits the coaches just picked up - head says - check their injury histories..

Howe come?

sorry will see myself out

Yeah Dan Howe does not excite me at all. Works his guts off but doesn't really achieve a lot. I'd definitely take him at VFL level but a big no for him on the AFL list, even as a rookie.
Yep. Bloke is no good.

Maybe some are putting too much faith in a poster from the Hawks board. There are plenty on there who think that they have a genuinely good list which is clearly not the case.

Also possible that we have a cleaning job at the new facility that he applied for.

Had lunch with former premiership player Richard Dennis today, nice bloke. No rumours sadly. Said Kernaghan was a God in Melbourne when he played, only a couple of the others plays got noticed or attention like that in public.
Likes the recent changes to the club, used to have Brian Cook as a coach/administrator at East Perth when he player there, rated the bloke extremely highly. Said every club was doing the money in that bag stuff, but Carlton got a bit too flashy about it. Also reckon we go all the way this year. I like the way he thinks

To pull a finger out as there's no certainty of a place in the side but that there can be if they put in the work, which would be similar to the existing messaging - I'd imagine.
Howe is a different style of player but in any event, I wouldn't be making list management decisions based on the feelings of peripheral players.

Very underrated was Richard Dennis extremely good hands - had he kicked a bit straighter in the 1987 Grand Final  - after did his knee was never quite the same.

Just realised he didn't once mention how he was as a player, pretty modest guy imo. Still big blues fan also, doesn't think or care much about Norf.

Problem is that we are slow through the middle and the flanks when we're missing our first choice players, and what quality personnel we do have maybe has a 4 year window at most unless we get lucky at recruitment.

If we're not looking likely for a flag in 2023 or 2024, we'll have to be more aggressive with the bottom half of the list. Right now, we should be more aggressive with the bottom quarter or third.

In a period in which four-time premiership coach Alastair Clarkson has flipped many magnets, shifting 21-year-old Dan Howe into a midfield role has proved a masterstroke.

Recruited to the club as an intercept defender with Pick 31 in the 2014 national draft, Howe had played only 15 games going into this season, struggling to crack into a successful Hawks side.

Set to double that figure in the 2017 campaign alone, Howe has found his niche, playing a nullifying role in a Hawthorn team that is finally back on its feet.

Over the past five weeks, in a stretch where the Hawks have lost only once, Howe has shut down the likes of Joel Selwood, Nat Fyfe, Josh Kennedy, Dylan Shiel and Adam Treloar.

As a result, it’s allowed Hawthorn’s talented on-ball group to gain a valuable upper hand out of the middle, with Brownlow Medal contender Tom Mitchell perhaps the biggest beneficiary.
Yeah but check their trajectory since 2017. And now he can’t hold a spot in Mitchell’s rebuild? No thanks.

I certainly wasn't saying "get him".

Hawks have got rid of Mitchell, Gunston and O'Meara too. Are they all shit?

Even if we did, he wouldn't play in our best side. Would be midfield depth but could potentially be used on blokes like Neale, Petracca, Mills etc. in big finals if we wanted someone to do that job.

Every team has role players, Jacob Townsend is premiership player

need placating regarding the concept of bringing in depth players - don't we create our own as better players at the top push lesser players into the depth zone?

also
