I don't actually disagree with what you are saying. Feel like I'm just playing Devil's advocate now to offer the alternative viewpoint.

Mitchell wants to free up spots to play the kids. They are rebuilding. Howe would likely be a better alternative than the kids initially, but what is the point if they don't see him as part of the next flag? Clubs are always at varying stages of the cycle.

We pushed out some blokes for no return because Malthouse was an idiot. Robinson could play but he had some issues and the coach wanted him gone. Didn't stop him being a handy player at another club. There are always players squeezed out of one club who go on to be successes elsewhere.

We have brought in one player, Acres, who we will create a spot for. That forces one weaker player out in that depth improvement scenario. We have a number of "maybes" on our list. Any youngsters we draft are going to be "maybes" at best (for 2023).

Our window is open now, and we want as many of our list capable of playing senior footy if required. If we see 4 kids that we think are worth drafting, that is fine. But if we only really want 3 in what is a shallow draft, isn't it better that the 4th player can be called upon to play a role in 2023 if needed? That doesn't mean I'm advocating for Howe.

I hope we draft 4 great kids that serve us well. Reading the room suggests there "might" be something else at play.

Robbo was more than a handy player at Brisbane - central to their rise to the top 4 echelon.

O'Meara was part of a trade to get Meek to Hawthorn as they badly needed a ruckman to replace McEvoy, and O'Meara was happy to go back and finish his career in his home state. Gunston is 30, as is Mitchell, and both were part of a process to rebuild ASAP.

Howe is 27, arguably in his Prime, and in most circumstances would normally be retained as a harder body to play his role and also protect the young incoming players, yet he's delisted without a destination club or trade. Much like we did with Stocker.

I'm of the opinion that we need to start replacing our best 22 with players better than we have. Recruiting for 'depth' when the incoming player is no better than someone in our starting 22 is simply recruiting dead wood. We should be aiming to improve our list with every selection, and the player that is forced out of the best 22 becomes depth, who is then forced to battle hard to break back in, rather than a sub-par player languishing in the two's until enough players are injured that they get a recall by default.
That's why recruiting Durdin was weird. He's not better than Weitering.

He also turns 29 in 2024 if that matters.

He played 20 games in 2021 before they prioritised getting games into blokes like Ward and MacDonald.

Rhys-Jones rule applies to punching our blokes.
This bloke couldn't tie Rhys Jones' bootlaces.

Bloke is literally a very poor footballer with no redeeming features. Would be Thomas Bugg Mach 2.

Tongue in cheek reply to a post that read:

Bit of difference between taking the best available ready made option in a mid season draft because we literally had no one left to put there, vs recruiting a battler who’s no better than our existing options, when there literally a whole talent pool available to choose from.

…But I don’t complain

Actually the guy is 27 and turns 28 about the start of next season. He played 9 games this season for 1 win and 8 losses in a poor team.

Said poor team decided to delist him.

From memory he broke Zac Fishers ankle and also got weeks for punching our skipper.

He'd be lucky to get a VFL position for mine.
He deliberately lashed out and kicked Fish on the calf and broke his leg the dog.....don`t want!!!

Re Daniel Howe.

Yeah he's a bit of a dirty prick and has had it on for a few of our blokes.

The Hawks are on a youth drive and players like Howe were always going to make way for their youth policy. Does that necessarily mean he isn't 100% not good enough though?

If the club see fit that he gets a gig next year and it helps our club, I'm all for it. Although it would surprise me if we did give him a rookie spot tbh.

Newnes is twice the player Howe is and we know how most Carlton supporters felt about him.
Playing inside mid is a different beast to playing on the wing.

We have LOB and Cottrell who are or will be on the same level as Newnes. We don’t need to keep 3 C-grade wingers on our list after adding Acres.

Howe replaces Setterfield for inside mid depth, with the understanding that our best stoppage group are an elite group. That is why we can carry a dour defensive mid with exposed AFL form to jump in if need be.

We don’t have enough of a read on Carroll or Kemp as inside midfielders yet, and have too much of a read on Dow. Stocker was also meant to develop in that role but never hit the required fitness levels to be played as a permanent inside mid.

Howe isn’t a long term solution. He’s just a guy we can leverage for a year or two while we work out our next best options for that next tier moving forward.

Spoke to an assistant coach from another club last weekend and asked him who he thought were the biggest 3 threats to his team for next season and he rated us as one of them.

He said we have all the pieces of the puzzle (from a list perspective) and as much of a balanced list of any team. The only question mark is our running ability. He said the feeling amongst clubs was that if you were close to us at half time you could run all over us.

Also said that Geelong showed this year that if your contested beasts play less than 70% game time they are more damaging.

He said the running players like Holmes allowed Geelong to do that this year and expects us to take Hollands for all of the above. Also said that if as expected 5 interchange is introduced, they won’t use it for rucks but for keeping key midfielders fresh.

He also said Phillipou was amazing in his interview. He was blown away by his mindset at such a young age. He expects Essendon will take him and if they don’t he won’t slip too much further.

This is why I have found it strange that some people have bemoaned the lack of a plan B, it's on the coaches etc. No game plan can continue to stand up all match if your blokes are buggered relative to the opposition.

TV never really shows how much of an effect the varying fitness levels are having. Our footy early in the year was unbelievable when we were up and running. Live at the Hawthorn and Port games was just so obvious we couldn't run with them as the game wore on. Dogs was similiar.

We improved (from a running perspective but ironically not win/loss) because we changed the mix a bit. Cottrell and Lob didn't play together (barring sub) until round 10, then became regulars. We played all of TDK, Pitt and JSOS to start the year. Pitt got injured so that forced our hand, but when he came back we never played the 3 of them together again. We dropped Jack, rested Pitt, then dropped TDK. I figured the extra bench spot might allow the 3 to play, but not from what you are saying.

Will be very interesting not only who we add, but who we leave out to accommodate the extra run.

I doubt we will take George, not because he isn't talented, but because I think we will be drafting for players to impact for next year
Don't think any of youngsters we select would have an impact in 2023, they would be exceptional if they could do, very few young players can step up to the significant difference in the big time, and impact in initial year, Austin & Club's vision is giong to be long term always.

Sam Walsh is the exception of course, an elite player from the word go , will be an AFL champion, very very few younsters like him, obviously.

In last year's draft:

Josh Rachele
Nick Daicos
Josh Ward
Jason Horne-Francis
Jesse Motlop
Jase Burgoyne

All played and had an impact in 2022.

It is usual for at least 3-4 draftees to be competing for the Rising Star
