Brett Deledio's Tiger deal on hold

A lot depends on whether Pendlebury stays at Collingwood & how close Richmond are playing in September by seasons end 2012. After the Polo, he stayed at McGuire's Portsea house.

Read into what you want.

i havent seen anywhere that he has stated he wants to hold off talks until the end of the year... its only January the afl season hasn't even started yet...

i think alot of people are reading into this to much... atleast for now.. if around mid-year he hasnt signed up yet then id be abit worried..

i wouldnt stress alot of players hold off talks... pav has put off talks until the end of the year twice wif freo and i dont think he ever seriously considered leaving.

if its a money issue he wont get more anywhere else anyway atleast not in the long run. in 2 years he will be able to go on the veterans list which means we can pay him alot more

Still waiting on DeepThroat to confirm the 5 way trade involving several first rounders, Richo coming out of retirement and a goat.

:D Quality... :thumbsu:

how did you know about the goat *i yelled that in caps*

& LMAO @ RFC_O getting in on the banter... (pre-Aussie Day holiday drinkies in the office perhaps?) ;)

geelong is the only club with potential breathing space now Ling, ottens milburn and Mooney gone...no-one else would have 700k+ of space, it would mean 2 pretty good players exiting at collingwood or Hawthorn, hgenerally not ones they would be prepared to release

We are paying Hale's $400k contract and Urquhart who is on our rookie list is on $350k. Both contracts end at the end of this year. That frees up a fair bit of space of which we are currently paying.

We are paying 96% of our cap I believe and haven't used a lot of the $500k marketing allowance either, this would be additional expenditure if we dipped into this reserve.

Club has said it has the capacity to take on a high-end player, however, we weren't really in a position on-field to really justify going to that expense. I don't know if the position will be different at the end of this year.

This is going to be very interesting to see how this pans out, not from a Richmond point of view but from strategy point of view across the league.

As I understand it as Deledio is in Richmond's top five paid players so they can match any offer that a team offers him. Collingwood would only be able to pay any reasonable salary if it loses a big name player to GWS. It was reported by many media outlets late last year that because of changes to veterans rules and retirements that Geelong will have at least $800k-$900k in salary cap space. Hence, money wise Geelong is going to be a suitor, Collingwood may be. Both of those also fit the final criteria as you would think both are likely top four finishers this year.

The question is say Geelong offers Deledio a contract and he says I am leaving because I want to play finals, do Richmond match? I would think if he says he is leaving because he wants to play finals then you are really saying I have no faith in my team making the finals anytime soon and that is not the type of guy you want around. From Richmond's point of view, its a difficult decision.

The next question is do Richmond have a preference of where he lands? My understanding too is that whether he goes to a Geelong or GWS, the compensation formula is the same. So from a compensation point of view there is little difference but do Richmond make Deledio sweat and possibly be a bit nasty and keep telling him they will match anything a Geelong offers. Deledio would obviously say, well, then I will sign for GWS but I doubt he actually would.

Its interesting as do you match and do you have a preference where he goes? I tend to think, no and no but it would be interesting to see what Tiger fans think. Its probably all just Herald Sun hyperbole but its a situation that is going to come out soon with different players and teams.

this cant be right as the diff between min to max of the cap is around 700k

with the greatest respect im not sure there would be a case in Lids mind leaving Punt rd to a side like NM facing every kind of challenge just to remain solvent letalone have designs on a flag...ummm....Nexttttttttt:rolleyes:

the thing is tas

1 i wouldnt think our marketing allowance is being used much either.
2 even if you add hale and urq's contract together, being 750 k he is already on about 600k so we only have to increase his current wage by 150k.

I am not saying we would chase him or he would be interested in coming to us, just mostly saying we have some dead weight contracts expiring end of this year with a bit of space left to jiggle after that. The poster I replied to said there wouldn't be any other club that could find $700k off the bat. We are paying that currently for a guy not playing for us and a rookie nobody else would take for free. :p

I wouldn't expect Lids to move, as you said he has been on a pretty good wicket and probably has been paid pretty well ever since he has been there and who knows, he might play for another 8 or 10 years so his earning potential is still very high and he has plenty of time to experience success.

I don't think Lids is moving so debating it is fairly pointless.

But you have a pretty short memory if you think North can't win flags spending less than other clubs spend. Hell, we beat sides when they were blatantly cheating on the salary cap as well. ;)

As to our long-term survivability, people have been writing us off for longer than RFC has been alive and will probably still be doing it long after you and I are dead. It is water off a duck's back by now to me. :p

I don't think we'll pick him up.

Geelong are known for doing things the natural, hard way.

We raise our own players from the start. There has been the odd Mooney and Ottens, but I can't see us taking Lids. Or dropping anyone for Lids.

not sure who you answered in your post but i think the point is other than the expansion teams who have a larger cap we should be able to match any other club. whether we do or not is another question.

to get him he would be right up there as the most paid player(1 or 2 off). would go against all that the cats have stood for of late.

Hehe... santa, I don't think it's a coincidence that you agreeing for once with Rusty happens to be when he is trolling. You two were just simply born to butt heads :)

ITT it's a good idea to assume a sarcasm emote at the end of Rusty's posts :D

he should troll more often seems its the only time he makes any sense.

the rumour mill with scully just didnt go away. theres been rumours about this for a while now. sometimes where theres smoke theres fire.

all im saying is if the club does not know for sure and cant pin deledio down get a straight answer they should be planning for the worst even if it doesnt happen.

trolling or not what crusty said on this is a pretty logical and obvious thing the club should do.

Actually there were similar rumours (in fact I call it scuttlebutt, never heard anything convincing) when he was approaching the end of his last contract. Understandably in that case with the whole Wallace debacle.

I agree that the club should be prepared for the remote chance he did decide to go elsewhere. If we had lost him two years ago, I'd have been devastated, since the club seemingly had little direction. But right now, I don't believe losing any single player would matter too much. The place is so much more club oriented, unlike the days with Richo and Browny (not blaming them personally). We were way too intent on placing our hopes on individuals back then. These days, I don't get that vibe at all, quite the opposite.

The most remarkable thing about this story when l read it was that my reaction was... meh. I actually dont care if he wants to leave. Of course l want him to stay, because he's in our top 5, but he's overrated and has not developed anywhere near the level expected when we recruited him.

My opinion only, but if we had to lose someone to free agency out of Lids, Dusty, Jack and Cotch... see ya Brett every day of the week. Would rather those that are committed to the club. If l were in his shoes, l'd do the same. As a supporter:

Status update: not fussed.
