Zillmere is actually a pretty good option.

Sadly, that club is largely dead as a senior football club, and their junior program is lacking.

It's an excellent playing surface, one of the biggest in Brisbane. There is also ample room to build new office/admin/fitness facilities.

A takeover of Western Districts ground (where Kenmore plays in Chelmer) is the best option imo though.

How about a deal where we takeover at Chelmer, and they take over the Gabba catering from Michael O'Brien?

Do you reckon the club published this question as a way of saying "See what we have to put up with?" ?

I think it is a real concern. But less for the fans than for the players

If the training facilites and the gym are at springfield, then then players will get ready for the game and get warmed up and then by the time they get on the train and into the gabba, they will have cooled down and not be ready to play, and what if one of the players gets lost mid route or there are public transport problems we may find ourselves down a player and our emergencies will be out near ipswich. Can't believe they haven't thought more about this.

I feel like we're getting too good of a deal there, might have to chuck something in...... pick 5 and aish?

Mr Ripper likes this.

Pretty sure I just saw a cap sail up into the air and a heard a giant hallelujah at the same time. Coincidence?

Completely ridiculous statement...... we can't have players walking the distance from the nearest train station to the gabba right before a game ;)

Do players work out in the gym before a game?
Wonder how every away team (including us, when away) copes with that.

Edit: Just re-read your post and realised you're taking the piss.:$

A rookie getting a lift with a senior player is the closest I think most of these blokes get to public transport.

The Chelmer oval, IIRC, would need a great deal of work before it ever was anything near the required standard. As a former BCC dump, the surface is very uneven. However, believe it or not, back in its glory days the Chelmer oval actually once hosted a Queensland v Tasmania interstate game, and was once used to stage the QAFL GF.

Positives- big enough main ground, no question. Nearest train station just across the road. Excellent road and bus access.

Negatives- near enough to zero existing infrastructure. I don't know about its flood exposure, but I suspect not good. Nor the space for 2 ovals, other than if the even worse standard Sherwood ground is subsumed. And then you get into things like existing leases etc. Last, haven't done the survey but wouldn't think there was anywhere near enough space for admin etc buildings.

However, and perhaps not all that pertinent, gets my vote as it is only 15mins from home.

Was at the interstate game as 10 year old with my Dad. Cracking game. Ah the memories.

Played my open age debut at Chelmer/Kenmore seniors this year, the entire field was basically gritty sand, apart from the cricket pitches, which were thick boggy mud and damn near impossible to run through at full tilt without going base over apex. It was the first game of the year just coming off the back of summer and there was a storm the day before though. However I also played a few junior games over next door at Sherwood, I remember at least a couple of games where the entire 50m closest to the Kenmore ground was just bogged, complete mud, no grass. Probably not a viable option at all.

However, I like the Zillmere idea. Fairly close to a fair few northside clubs such as Sandgate, Aspley, Mayne, Kedron and Wilston Grange, so if many (any?) people still trot out for the Zillmere Eagles they would have clubs of all standards and ability to relocate to in a reasonable radius. There are decent facilities existing, plenty of space around O'Callaghan Park and from memory they even have a fandangled electronic scoreboard. Main oval is 165m x 138m which is excellent. Oval 2 across the creek is 155m x 130m but I believe there is room to reconfigure the oval to make it Gabba sized, maybe running the field in an east-west configuration. However the shapes of the ovals are quite weird, Oval 1 is essentially a rectangle and Oval 2 is really asymmetrical:

Edit: also really close to the Zillmere traino. Quite a good location.

One big memory of that game as a kid was collecting aluminium cans from all the drunks. Collected thousands and thousands, made at least $1.20 that day.

Best memory of those ovals - the little one out the back at Sherwood, kicked 9 goals in grade 5 schools final there. Worst memory - getting cleaned up and taken to hospital in a Wests v Sandgate Colts game at Chelmer.

Not a chance in hell that place is going to become the Lions next base. You can't 'take over' something that is owned by the council and is home to about half a dozen different community clubs for a start.

There must be something wrong with the land, cos I never found a single gold top there despite all the cow shit.

Depending on which part of Everton Park it's in the land is pretty unstable, not good for building large state of the art admin/training facilities on.
