Brisbane lions to be this years surprise packet??

Staker isn't a spud. The guy hasn't played a proper game for almost two years, of course he was going to be rusty during the NAB series.

He was actually quite valuable when he played those games in 2010 and 2013.

Not bad for someone that also played in defence that year.

Staker is quality. Not quite enough to build a forward line around though unfortunately.

Will still chop us to pieces through midfield dominance, that's not saying much though

Staker will still be rusty for the first few games. Don't even expect him to play in round one.

McStay is one guy people need to watch this year. Whilst all the talk is on young Hogan from Melbourne being the next big thing, McStay is also showing some very impressive signs.

1 or 2 new players can't lift a bottom 4 team into the finals. I'll start talking about them in higher regard once they actually start achieving on the field. Right now i'd say they're on coarse for another 2013 like season.
You're a West Coast supporter; It wasn't that long ago, your lot went from wooden spoon to finals in 12 months. Just sayin'.

"Surprise packet" could be right. As a close follower of our team, I don't know what we'll do, how we'll perform this year. Someone already mentioned, the talent is potentially there, but the consistency may not, just yet. I'd be pleasantly surprised, but don't expect finals footy this year.

There fans on bigfooty are the worst of all other teams fans on this site. They don't understand karma or the cycle of rising and falling.

They'll have a good side and it won't surprize me if they make the eight or even top four. In a few years it will be back to irrelecvancy and AfL handouts to the bad news bears once again, and we'll be back to our rightful place of dishing out spankings once again...
If there is one club that doesn't understand the cycle of the rise and fall it seems it is yours. Just this week your chief executive said the club expects to play finals this year and Eddie said you can pinch a flag. But good on Collingwood for selling hope and refusing to acknowledge every piece of evidence that suggests the club is still on a downward trajectory.

Brisbane get too many injuries each season, going back a few years now. The problem is never addressed. Nothing has changed with regards to that (it can be improved), so why would this be any different?

I don't understand your point completely however I do agree we have too many injuries for too long. Don't know exactly what the cause is thought.

3rd most points against last year, allowing a score on 51.3% of opposition inside 50s (2nd last) and lost Patful I'd say your defense is weak compared to other teams, Leppa is a defensive minded coach though and you are improving there I'll give you that much.

Your attack is hopeless though, only Melbourne & St Kilda scored less points than you guys last season and you were dead last for scoring per inside 50, can't see that changing much this season

10th at best
The defence is very different this year. Bewick, Rich, CBeams, Merrett, Paperone and Lester didn't play there much last year but will play mostly defence this year. It's looked really solid in pre-season.
We'll also certainly have the most goals kicked by players less than 6 foot tall, which deserves a medal.

Brisbane are really short a key forward but other than that they seem to be developing very well. If one of Close, McStay or that Brisbane academy guy (Hammer something) who is on the rookie list can develop into what they need then Brisbane will easily be a top 8 side in a few years, possibly more.

its looked solid, although you've played 3 teams who dished up absolutely nothing offensive wise in nab cup, we'll see how it goes in regular season

Hammelman wasn't secured by Brisbane.
He just happened to still be around after everyone else passed multiple times.

Brisbanes midfield is building nicely and the hype of acquiring Beams has set journos' juices flowing, but Brisbane has some way to go and both ends of the ground to really make things work.
It could happen, of course.......but the likelihood is that it won't.

I was surprised Hammelman was not taken in the national draft as watching his highlights it is easy to see how much potential he has.

To me while it is young Brisbane's defence is coming along nicely and their midfield is probably one of the top midfields in the competition. It is their forward line that is weak at the moment, at least that is what I think.

Hanley
Zorko
Rockliff
Rich
Beams
Christensen
Bewick
Merrett
Redden
Papparone
Green
Adcock
McGuane
Leuenberger

Not bad IMO. Decent stock.

Before any smart ass wannabe opens their mouth yes I opened a similar thread regarding the kangaroos. I think the lions will be one of the surprise teams of 2015 and will replace one of the top 8 teams from last year. A lot of these lads are very young , I can see a force emerging over these next 5 years. Expecting the GABBA to once again be a fortress in the not too distant future.
take papparone and mcguane out of there
