Head says we get this done, heart is worried because it's a prelim and anything can happen. The fact that we have seen Mason Cox win a prelim by himself has me worried - Curnow is a much better player, can see him kicking 3 in a quarter to take the game away from us. We have a better side on every line, need to make Weitering accountable, but our forwards are humming and all of them are happy to sacrifice their own game for a team win.

If we are legitimate, we should treat this game as other experienced finals teams have treated us over the last few years (see Geelong/Richmond etc), when we were the new kids on the block.

Given the experiences we have had over the last 4-5 years, comparatively to our opponent, we should expect a calm, mature performance from the team.

It’s over to the playing group now to show us that.

These are the reasons why we win the game and win well.
We are able to keep structure under pressure other teams look panicky this finals series.
GWS the only other team that look really well structured and play with an actual game plan.
For years we have been more of a kick than handball team. Rank this year kicks 2nd & handballs 18th.
This year the same, but a big change when someone takes a mark. It did start last year but now regular in 2023.
Players actually hold things up until someone presents. If no one presents, then it is a kick down the line.
They rarely play on even when there is no opposition player on the mark.
The fans don't really like it but that's what makes this team different to all the others.
It has taken all year to get this to a point where the players look comfortable playing this way.

We are dead last in handballs: GWS (2nd) 4146, Carlton (6th) 3890, Pies (10th) 3662 & Lions (18th) 2856
For a very long-time playing on and fast handballs has been the way to win games, finals and grand finals.
Hopefully this one change in game style will take us one step further and into the grand final.

When you look at the teams from the other finals the handball actually put more pressure on the receiver.
This in turn forces another handball and so on.
Quite often this ends up being a rushed kick regularly to no one in particular.
This creates more turnovers be it intercept marks or loose ball (my made-up stat) turnovers.

The handball is still super important in the game. How and when it is used is now crucial.
I think we have a good balance in this area.

I'd would like to hear us singing Country Roads and Sweet Caroline at least once a quarter.
Too many stiffs must have complained about “Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again”?

This is my biggest worry. We have had some shocking performances this year when we have underestimated opposition. It is going to be vital to start with high intensity.
I understand the premise, but at the end of the day - there’s actually a lot more to play for. A grand final spot, rather than a nice win over the hawks in July is a lot different for the mentality. I assume given the stakes complacency isn’t going to be a worry.

‘It’s extortionate’: Outrage over airlines’ huge price hike before AFL prelim final

One Virgin service from Melbourne to Brisbane scheduled for Saturday was listed at $855 one way for an economy fare.

Qantas has also listed one flight from Melbourne to Brisbane at $875 one-way on an economy fare on Saturday.

:think:It has not gone unnoticed that AFL boss Richard Goyder also remains chairman of the board at Qantas.

Their biggest win condition is Curnow & McKay.

Payne was not good against Port and Andrews hasn't exactly been setting the world on fire. I hate to say it but that is our biggest weakness at the moment against their biggest strength.

Andrews performs better when he can be more of a loose defender crashing over the top of a pack or being the second man up. 1 on 1 and he can honestly get beaten quite comfortably. Lord made him look quite average at times, cannot imagine what Curnow could do.

Midfield will be fine. Dunks can handle Cripps and I don't think Carlton will go so hard on Lachie Neale. Our forward line will need to be sharp as usual but if they are, they could be the reason we win this match.

Got a simple solution for ‘em. Don’t come up. Simple.

Interesting stat discussion from SEN, opposition teams have to beat us in contested possession in the double figures to be a chance. In the QF, Port actually beat us in that part of the game by 3 but we still belted them.

Ins and Outs from the 2022 Prelim v Cats if we are unchanged from the QF .

Outs- Darcy Gardiner, Daniel McStay, Daniel Rich, Noah Answerth >> Matho was the sub.

Ins- Connor McKenna, Josh Dunkley, Jaspa Fletcher, Ryan Lester.

Look a fair bit stronger IMO and importantly we are in a lot better shape physically this time... zero excuses this Saturday night.

Could have booked refudable air fares last week easily enough. I booked my flights up for the prelim on the final whistle of the qualifying final, wasn't too bad at around $500 return (in fairness, I'm flying up thurs night and back to melbourne monday night).

That is the best solution if you are either retired or able to get some time off work.
I imagine accommodation on Thursday evening and Sunday evening are reasonable.
Friday and Saturday evening with the Broncos v Warriors also playing might be high or are you staying with family/friends.
