Three years difference. Regardless, Grundy will get back into the team. He’s been pretty good, even his forward craft has been better than at the Pies, he will just need to sacrifice his game more.

It's just over 2 years and 3 months. Gawn looks like he's still got a couple of years in him and Grundy already looks a long way from his best. There's just no point keeping Grundy if the main reason is to cover Gawn's retirement.

And if he had been "pretty good" then he wouldn't have been dropped.

Yeah, if Grundy was 24-25 or something, it would be no big deal. Melbourne would wear a year or two of awkward transition/overlap in exchange for getting a long-term ruck when Gawn retires.

But with Grundy pushing 30 himself, it's hard to know what the plan is. He's not working that well with Gawn, he's not pushing Gawn out of the team, and he's not the long-term replacement. So what is he?

Pretty clearly Melbourne lol maybe even both, would probably stifle Draper's development

More likely to stifle Bryan’s development than Draper. Since Essendon has played 2 rucks this year.

Upside is Sheils contract expires this season so it gets Melbourne out of paying the remaining years on Grundys deal.

I think better offers will be out there for Grundy/Dees but this is by no means a bad one

Yeah we will definitely let him leave and rely on our 32 year old ruck off two recos to play on indefinitely
I just don’t think it’s good business to be paying $600k+ on a 5 year deal for a back up option. And that’s without even considering how disgruntled Grundy may/may not be with the situation

Would be a better use of resources to find a cheaper option on the back up ruck market and then try to find a real forward

He's already been forced out of 1 club. Doubt he will allow that again. Would probably just sit at a hipster cafe with an oat latte every day and play a board game with a barista named Guhaivio and watch the guaranteed money in his contract continue streaming in.

Such an interesting situation in terms of contract for Grundy and how this has all come about. The way I sort of look at it is that you are worth what someone is willing to pay you, but it comes down to what you want your career to be and how you fit into the big picture. Grundy signed for big money and as a result of other decisions on other inflated contracts Pies had to move him on. If Brodie had taken less he might be still part of the team but at the same you can't begrudge him for accepting the big contract when Adelaide were chasing him.

Now with the Melbourne move it seems that the price was more or less right but it's the remaining years that may have them feeling buyers remorse. Grundy should accept that he is a commodity and has gone down a path to maximise his earnings and as such these conversations are going to be had. It's nothing personal, and if anything it's on Melbourne to get the best out of him and not sabotage his performance through lack of support. With that said, another club might be a better fit for him.

As an aside, if you think about maximising contracts, Jarrod Polec probably got paid more per game than any player in history. Would you rather his career or a one club players taking unders for their whole career.

Too much of a hipster to leave Melbourne, we saw that last year.

Blues are a good shout, TDK out the door...but they just signed Pittonet to 4 years didn't they?
Pittonet signing up has no bearing on anything. It’s 4 years but it’s on below league average money. He gets 4 years of job security and we get at least a very capable back up ruckman who is proven at the level for that duration and if he gets a better offer elsewhere, the ball is in our court trade wise. If TDK decides to leave, we’ll 100 percent be bringing in another ruckman to at least compete with Pittonet for the number 1 job. If that’s what happens, we’d have to ask the question about Grundy.

Were not asking Brodie to be a key forward but as a ruck/forward and as usual the media can't seem to get this into their heads.

He’s been told this is your role if you want to help us win the flag this year and there is no reason why he can’t be a useful forward, crash packs and be a presence.

Im not sure exactly what the problem is.

Well you gotta show me the house, car and family Polec has compared to say Liam Shiels. Then I can judge

The funniest thing about this whole situation is the club that could do with him the most is Collingwood
Errr we booted him because we had adequate options to cover him….we aren’t in need of him or his salary at all.
