Traded Brodie Grundy [traded to Sydney for #46 and F2]

I don't know if Grundy is physically capable of playing 5 more years. He's slowed down noticeably. He was playing decent when Max was out of the team, the problem is having Max the dominant ruck is best for the team and Grundy is just not a natural forward.
It will be interesting to see what happens, in all honesty if I was Melbourne I'd try and offload him because by the time Gawn is ready to hang them up, Grundy will be cooked too

Might not be 600k improvement, but he gives you a better shot at winning a flag.
Seemed to me that it was essentially Grundy vs Tom Mitchell last year for Collingwood, and they decided they were better off with Cameron/Cox + Mitchell than they were with Grundy + existing mids. On form to date you can’t knock them even if in a vacuum they might be better with Grundy as well

Which 1st rucks is he better than?

Wonder if hes now open to leaving Vic now?

Sydney
Port
Carlton
WCE
Geelong

Probably the clubs most in need
Sure he is better then most. But he is much more expensive then most as well. Some clubs dont want to pay that sort of money for a ruck. On top of that he is picky as to where he will go. It may not be easy for Melbourne to move him on.

It pains me to say this and I mean Crows supporters have made jokes about it for years with Motlop and co but Grundy absolutely would be the icing on the cake for Port.

Gives them a good shot for the next few years I mean if they can go this well currently with Lycett and Finlayson then I would assume their midfielders would be licking their lips at the prospect of Grundy knocking taps down their throats.

Knocking taps down their throats? They're more of a chance while hes still at Melbourne

I am not sure where people have suddenly got this idea from that he's a good tap ruckman,

Was always his biggest issue at Collingwood getting 40-50 hitouts but under 10 to advantage.

Grundy is an excellent accumulator and hit out winner but he is not at all a good hit out to advantage ruckman

I think Grawndy can still work, they just haven’t found the right mix.

One of the issues is that coaching seems more interested in being a strong defensive/intercept team, rather than building our brand around being a strong stoppage/clearance team.

I get there are more interception opportunities than stoppages per game. But looking at our personnel we should be aiming to smash teams at clearances rather than be content conceding them.

Neither player is going to worry teams when resting forward. Gawn is an unreliable shot at goal, and Grundy is a so-so aerial threat.

Gawn is at his best playing a kick behind the ball and plugging gaps in our defence.

I think Grundy needs more continuity with the mids. Focus on pressure, tackling and just surging the ball forward. Do enough to keep opposition rucks accountable so Gawn can play as a loose man.

I doubt the club would seek to trade Grundy this year. The club won’t want to admit to failure.

We also have no AFL standard depth behind Gawn.

I also doubt Grundy would initiate a trade. I recall he had to renegotiate his salary giving up ~$100k a year in the move to make the trade work.

He’d likely need to renegotiate his deal a second time to facilitate a move. I don’t see him wanting to leave more money on the table.

Grundy and a KPD yes.

We definitely need both.

Is there a situation where Melbourne can afford to pay for some of Grundys contract in exchange for a better pick for Grundy? Or is it likely IF he is traded (I seriously don’t expect he will be) that their commitment to him ceases as well?

Grundy nor the Dees are agitating for a trade.

This is fake drama being pushed by Cornes and Barrett after the Bailey Smith trade rumour didn’t stick.

Would cost more than a pick 27 (What it costed Dees to get him over) as Collingwood were effectively palming him off to anyone who would take the contract whereas Dees would be fairly happy hanging onto him as Gawn backup and there’s half a dozen teams lining up for him.

Dees also don’t have the same cap pain Collingwood had. Only reason that would change as if we identified a free agent worth targeting and using that cap space on instead but I haven’t heard of Dees going for any at the moment.

Doubt it. If Grundy leaves it's cos he was sold a BS vision by the Dees and they will get him to where he wants to go after wasting a year of his time.

It's not good business to be paying ~$650k for your backup ruck playing reserves just in case Gawn gets injured. You can get adequate backup rucks for nothing every single year.
