Traded Brodie Grundy [traded to Sydney for #46 and F2]

Doubt it. If Grundy leaves it's cos he was sold a BS vision by the Dees and they will get him to where he wants to go after wasting a year of his time.

It's not good business to be paying ~$650k for your backup ruck playing reserves just in case Gawn gets injured. You can get adequate backup rucks for nothing every single year.

His a contracted AA ruck with half a dozen suitors who the Dees are happy to keep. Dees hold all the cards in any trade negotiations.

Calm your farm.

He did 1 week in a scratch match because we were playing our bunny team on their hoodoo ground.

You’re carrying on as if he has been languishing for 10 weeks in the VFL. He will be back this week or next.

Right now he's an over paid fringe player. That may change by trade period though.

How did he go in the scratchy?

Overpaid fringe player? His only sitting behind a 6 time AA / Premiership captain in his key role having won 2 AAs himself.

Last year pick 27 was the deal as clubs were concerned about his injuries and ability to get on the park. That concern is now alleviated - hence no reason his trade value has gone backwards. It is also why so many suitors are now lining up this year round for him despite Dees happy to keep him.

If it’s port a F1 gets it done. Pick 37 doesn’t.

Doubt it. We'll see.

Nobody was concerned about his injuries, he went for pick 27 because he was a salary dump. Sounds like you’re trying to convince yourself that he’s got high trade value tbh. Pick 37 and Port takes Melbournes entire share of his salary off the books is about right. More than that, and like Collingwood, Melbourne is on the hook for a portion of his $$ for the next 5 years. Nobody to blame but themselves for this mess either.

Big difference here is Dees don’t need his salary off the books. Dees have signed up all the stars on long term contracts and have no cap stress like the Pies did.

Why would Dees take a pick 37 to strengthen a direct competitor for the flag by handing them a dual AA ruckman when they don’t need to?

Not sure what this “mess” you refer to is. Happy to keep him at the Dees, great backup for Gawn who will have more niggles as he ages.

I take it then that Melbourne's list has no problems to solve for, given you'd be happy to waste a commodity and cap adding no value?

I would take a casual look at the forward line and say, yeah maybe we could add a player or two there rather than sink a 650k player in demand in the 2s

You think that paying a ruckman somewhere in the vicinity of $600-700k to play in the VFL isn’t a mess? You think that Grundy will be content to stay at Melbourne as backup for Gawn?

You’re high mate.

His played one match in the VFL mate.

Let me say that again. One match.

Talk about whose high mate Jesus lol.

Finlay McRae has played all season in the 2s. Doubt Collingwood would be open to offloading him off for pick 37 do you? (Likely in the 40s post S/Academies).

As I said, Dees have no reason to offload him, let alone because he played one match in the VFL.

If he is not in your first team. That is 650k times 4 years of wasted salary cap that you will want to dump. You dont pay someone that money as a back up player. He may want to leave if the Dees wont play him, however he will be the one to pick the club and they will make the Dees take some of his salary and any picks exchanged for him will not be first round picks. Gawn and Grundy in the same team looks like fools gold to me.

The funniest thing about this whole situation is the club that could do with him the most is Collingwood
Nah. We need our rucks to be better aerially, and Cameron and Cox are serviceable in their roles and club and supporters are happy with them. In response to your comments about who will compete with the likes of Gawn in finals? Cameron has proven a good negater and has built into strong form the last few weeks against quality opposition.

Because there are a pile of 50 goal a year forwards on the free market ready to pay 700k to going into 2024 right?

Realistically where else would they put the money if not Grundy in 2024. One who also can play in the ruck and provide relief for Gawn.

That money is best spent on Grundy in 2024 as far as I see it. Regardless if he is in the VFL for the occasional match or not.

7NEWS chief football reporter Tom Browne has revealed fresh details about the former Magpie’s contract.

Grundy was on around $900,000 a year at Collingwood and the Pies agreed to pay a large portion of his contract while he was at Melbourne - somewhere between $250-300,000.

But Browne says, under the contract terms, that agreement exists only between Collingwood and Melbourne and can’t be transferred.

“If he wants to move clubs, the AFL rules do theoretically allow three clubs to pay part of his wage,” Browne said.

“But Melbourne have an agreement with Collingwood only to pay about three-quarters (of his wage, while Collingwood pays the rest) ...

“It leaves the Demons exposed, and makes any potential trade very difficult.”

We’d be lucky to get a late second for him tbh.
Your club has worked out what every Collingwood supporter already knew before last trade period. Grundy is not a forward. He will be asking for a trade at the end of the year and Melbourne will cut their losses and get his $$ off the books.

You are aware that the intention isn’t to primarily use him as a forward right?

As mentioned earlier, there are no other options banging down our door to invest that money in that would play a better role in the team than Grundy right now so I highly doubt we will “cut our losses”.

Who do you suggest we spend that 700k a year on if freed up to better compliment our current list?
