Re: Brownlow Medal

Cheers i haven't watched every game though, only about 5 each week. So some of my votes I have just gethered from stats and highlights I have seen.

Re: Brownlow Medal

Doesnt matter what you see guys cause umpires most of the time see something different.

Agree totally.....plus the magots have to vote wihin an hour of the game finishing........no stats, no replays, no vote changing four days later, etc.

They actually do a reasonable job all things considered!

ps. For those of you trying to think and vote like an umpire........phewwww!!

Good exercise and thread though.

Re: Brownlow Medal

Reckon if you want to start 'thinking like an umpire', you'll need to watch each game and use the following multiplication factors based on the dearth and depth of midfield 'vote stealers' in their respective teams:
Goodes, Kerr 1.5
Dal Santo 1.25
Judd 1.1
Ablett 0.8
Once applying the relevant multiplication factors you'll then be around the mark.

Re: Brownlow Medal

I do like this thread, and I hope people keep it up throughout the season for betting purposes. I personally think Griffen from the doggies is a chance this year. Goddard is set for a big year, but I do not think he can win it...I do not know if it makes a massive difference but he does get a little angry at the umpires on the field...

Here is a little known brownlow medal statistic though. I am a big Rob Harvey fan and after going through his stats I was suprised to have realised that over his career he had more brownlow votes than he did free kicks against.
For someone who played 21 seasons, to gather more brownlow votes than free kicks against is amazing.

Re: Brownlow Medal

ive done votes since 2003!!! I did this by creating a statistical formula. I reckon it has worked accurately. I've refined it over the years and I reckon I have it perfect now, with not too much weight on worthless possessions (K.Cornes, Bowden) and uncontested marks.

6: Dal Santo, Judd
5: S.Johnson, Gilbee, Ablett, Jolly
4: Montagna, Goddard, Fraser
3: Akermanis, Hasleby, Mitchell, Tredrea, P.Burgoyne, Pearce, Lloyd, Drummond, Chapman, Selwood, Hurn, B.Johnson, Harding, Winderlich, Gibbs, Richardson, Johnstone, Edwards, Murphy,
2: Pavlich, Porplyzia, Roughead, Davey(Melb), Swan, Kerr, Lake, Fletcher, McVeigh, Bradshaw, Didak, Koschitzke, Giansiracusa, McIntosh, Power, Pendlebury
1: Higgins, Guerra, Stanton, Adcock, C.Jones (StK), Cox, Griffen, Boyd, Pavlich, Goodes, J.Brown, Watson, Moloney, Gilbert, LeCras, Franklin, Wiggins

So how have you done in the last 5 years Lloydy?

Re: Brownlow Medal

I'm suprised you guys don't have Goodes up there near the top ...... because I'm sure the umpires will have !!

Re: Brownlow Medal

So how have you done in the last 5 years Lloydy?

my votes have been pretty close to the mark mate, except last year, because my computer crashed in rd12 (Richo was leading) and i lost all the votes for that year and cbf'ed doing it again.

I dont exactly remember who Ive had win every year, but I remember my closest year was 2003 (1st bucks, then up there was goodes, ricciuto, voss, wanganeen). i had barry hall, warren tredrea, scott west and i think Cousins winning. It's more fair to forwards than the Brownlow but I've altered my formula over the years to try to also include defenders up there. hard to do tho. Reboundign defenders do well (Drummond this year), but Scarlett, Rutten, Lake don't often get votes. I'll quickly show you my formula, it's simple really.

Kick 1.5
Handball 1
Contested Mark 3
Uncontested Mark 1/3
Free For 1/3 (I have never believed in Frees Against because of the unreliabiltiy of umpires and also takign out Frees Against helps forwards and defenders, who giv away more frees and struggle to keep up with them midfielders stats wise)
Hit Out 1/3
Tackle 1
1%er 2
Clanger -2
Clearance 1/3
I50 1/3
R50 1/3
Goal 5
Behind 1/3
(I don't believe a Behind is worth a clearance, or I50, or anythign i itself. But behidns are useful because they are a good indicator of when a forward is leading well or when a midfielders is breakign the lines into the forward 50)
Goal Assists 1

I'm also thinkign of bringing in a coupel of changes for next season.

Disposal Efficiency
Disposals x (100% - Disposal Efficiency %) / 2

Contested Ball
Disposals x (Contested Possession/Total Disposals) / 2

I am thinkign of bringing in these because of the easy kicks in defence (uncontested possessions) and also to stop players liek Priddis scorign so high (inefficient kicker). I see these stats as helpign someone like Hodge, who doesnt get an incredible amount of the ball, but uses it well and in pressured situations.

very nice work but wouldn't having a high disposal efficiency be detrimental to a player?

Re: Brownlow Medal

Quick stat, Ablett has always polled in matches where he has had over 30 possessions

Re: Brownlow Medal

Nice thread...i've done this the last 2 years, except i translate the BigFooty Medal 5-4-3 votes into Brownlow 3-2-1 votes. Last year it had Ablett tying with Cooney for the medal with Black 2nd (pretty close i would say). Year before it had Harvey winning it i think, cant remember tho. Bartel i think 3rd behind Gaz.

Anyway, this year the results are in up til the end of Round 3, so for what it's worth here is the leaderboard after Round 3...

7 : Ablett
6 : Dal Santo, Judd
5 : Mitchell, Montagna
4 : Murphy M, Watson, Jolly, Gilbee

And i cant be stuffed with the rest...

You gave bowden the 3 votes for the worst ever 40+ possesion game??

Im asssuming this because there is no melbourne player in the 3 vote list, and bowden is yet to play a half decent game.

Sorry don't agree!

Davey would've just about got the 3 votes yesterday. Richo close aswell in a losing team.
