Clear difference in what is becoming a sideshow vs what you are talking about
Both are attempts to distract a player from their performance.

Players get booed/shouted at by supporters and the other team EVERY single time they are lining up for goal

Maybe you’re just used to it that you don’t notice it?

Forwards cop waaaaay more crap from the crowd over the course of their career. Think of Trav Cloke, or a Richo, think of the jeers/bronxies they got missing all those sitters. Soul/confidence destroying for them, but that’s just part of the game, and the intimidation from the crowd really worked.

Ok so a portion of the crowd boos and the club apologised.
What if it was only say 100 people and a player complained? Should a club apologise? What if a member of the crowd, just one boood in a players face near the fence? An apology or not? What if it was the crowd or our players teasing Blakey about his Lizard neck and he looked upset? Another apology? Can you see where this is going?

Axl, I've been supporting the club for a long time. Football comes up a lot in conversation everywhere, even in Perth and most people here support the eagles and dockers. When I say that I'm a pie supporter, I am forced to take on the toothless uneducated illiterate personna fostered by the feral inbreds who live in the stands of the MCG and never have to deal with anyone outside their tight circle of friends.

I'm sick of the concept of the collingwood faithful [portrayed by the media. I've had a gutfull of it. I want the pie fanbase to reflect a smart and educated and empathetic group of people who are focussed on winning premierships. I dont think the toothless crazy fan does the club any favours or me personally. Will stopping these fans from booing buddy change anything.....not much....but every little bit helps..

Bravo, best post of this thread, by a considerable margin.
Thanks.

By extension of that post I think the vast majority of Pies fans were WTF about why he was being booed. People were scratching their heads near me.

Most of us are great these days but some of our fans need to think a bit harder about what they are doing. To think about how things are perceived by others.

Yes the media are beating this up into something it isn’t but that small minority of our supporters brought it on the rest of us.

Who Sydney fans had no problem booing when he played for St Kilda.

Geez, how many years do you want to go back? Times have changed and the world has moved on. Many things in life that used to be acceptable are no longer.

Pining for the good old days or citing an opponent’s past poor behaviour as justification for one’s own current behaviour is like burying your head in the sand to avoid seeing what’s going on around you.

Well done Bucks.
Said what needed to be said.
Spot on.
Time for Footy fans to grow up & become better versions of themselves.
Support the Club without the negative & senseless booing.
I don’t mind individual game day booing against a true villain (if he/she has sniped or played for free kicks etc that day…or is a serial villain).
Booing Buddy…last Sunday was disgraceful.
Herd mentality at its worst.
We can do better than that.

Fair to say that all the gloss has come off another great win. Such a shame.

Every year we’re dogged by off-field distractions - players behaving badly, administrators doing/saying dumb things, groups of fans acting without class.

It would be great to be able to simply enjoy the footy rollercoaster, without all the other baggage. But I guess that isn’t the Collingwood way.

I don’t think it’s taken any gloss off at all. It was a WGAF situation at the time, and it’s a WGAF situation now.

Last thing to mention:

People are attacking "the club" for being "woke" and telling supporters what to do (pro tip: they're not).

But it's important to remember that the statement was not co-authored by the President or any of the board.

Two of the three co-authors are our captain and our senior coach, who we as a supporter base all have huge admiration and respect for.

Clearly this issue is something that has concerned and disturbed them after having been at the match yesterday. Post match, Moore and Buddy were involved in intense (yet seemingly respectful) conversation. Presumably this issue was being discussed.

I think if people are dying on a hill about their supposed right to boo, they should take a step back and think hard about what they're really being passionate about, and why it doesn't appear to align with the sentiments of the skipper and the coach whom are doing a fantastic job on the field as well as off it.

Why single out Buddy when Papley was booed? Because he is a “champion”

So if you don’t qualify as a “champion” you can be booed?

Really idiotic statement by the club.

Falling over themselves to virtue signal.

It's an eloguent response.
Eloguently put.

I’ve always admired your posts TRS, for you depth of knowledge, insights and persuasive opinions but I reckon you’re on the wrong side of this one.

Clearly a LOT of people GAF about this matter. So many that our team coach and captain, and club CEO (an old school “hard man” if ever there was one) felt the need to issue a joint statement condemning and apologising for the behaviour of a subset of fans yesterday.

I am personally tired of the perpetual Collingwood supporter stereotype - ignorant, uneducated, dentally-challenged and backward. Aren’t you?

Shouldn’t we all strive to break away from that perception and make Collingwood the best, inclusive, modern, aspirational footy club it can be, both on and off the field?

Our coach, captain and administration all seem to think so.

But Buddy does snipe and play for free kicks!

Inspired writing. Surprised they let you as a Collingwood supporter to use a computer whilst you are in remand and even more surprised that you could conjure the eloquent yet sometimes verbose wording in this post. Well done

Look, in my opinion, there was a racial component to the Goodes situation. People might quibble on this, everyone's entitled to an opinion, but that's mine. The reaction throughout the league has immediately linked these two situations and inflamed the situation. The statement made by the Swans has explicitly highlighted this. It's very much storm in a tea cup as you mentioned.
I don't disagree that there was more than likely a racist element for some, however the AFL's (and McLachlan's) reaction completely overlooked the fact that Goodes came out and said that it affected him. Once the public knew this it was never going to stop, irrespective of a participant's motivation which no-one could really know for certain unless the participant expressly stated what their motivation was.

I haven't seen the Swans' statement (presumably you're referring to an official statement?) but I wouldn't expect them to do us any favours. They would no doubt welcome any distraction given their 3 losses in a row and season in free fall.

I think a lot of people are tired of the stereotype, but I don't think statements like those published today are going to change that anytime soon. Our coach didn't feel the need to condemn or apologise for it in his press conference yesterday.

There are too many people in the mainstream AFL media who are either too lazy to challenge the perception, or don't wish to as it would mean presenting things in a less than black and white manner.

Let me put it simply for the dimwits- if there is a chance an act/gesture could be construed by some parties as racist, then don’t do it.

Not hard. Not infringing your rights.

It’s pretty simple really.

I know we've had our differences in the past sideswipe but this is just perfection.
