And once more, so you acknowledge that they sold their "souls" to achieve a premiership.
What cost integrity?

I was simply making the point that your list of players who have moved to Hawthorn from other clubs has very little relevance to the current situation, given money wasn't a big motivator for several of them (as shown by the relative contract costs at Hawthorn versus their old club). Yes they moved for a chance at premiership success, and that is one form of advantages currently lower ranked teams don't have. However this advantage tends to rotate around over the long term, although things like COLA abuse makes it harder for that rotation to happen (which is why the closest equivalent was eventually taken off Brisbane).

All I'm going to say is 9 year term is extremely high risk and could back fire and restrict the club in recruitment and retention for years to come, especially considering that this will fuel clubs opposition to COLA to a new level to the point the AFL's hand may be forced to remove or alter the allowance

Swans supporters are obviously celebrating now however it may come back to hurt them in a big way

Had a good chuckle at Eddie Mac on 360 going on about wanting a level playing field.

No worries Ed next year the Pies play 11 home games at the MCG, ANZAC day is totally random, wouldn't want one team to have an unfair advantage over any other now would we Ed?
Add in cost on footy dept and facilities vs the clubs he suggested were crying poor.

Maybe he should let the dogs use the westpac centre on Tuesdays

Large portion aren't quite celebrating, mostly optimistic but also pretty cautious/skeptical of it all.

Big difference here. Players at the caliber of Tippet and Franklin are being lured by contracts worth hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. Bulldogs and Demons probably paid not even half to pick up Hall and Clark/Dawes. Then again Bulldogs picked up Hall on the cheap with a draft pick, and he only had two seasons left in him. Clark and Dawes are no where near the caliber of Tippet and Franklin. Neither team has the ability to throw ridiculous kinds of money.

You missed the point completely. The issue is that the poorer teams are no match for teams with an extra financial assistance, when it comes to trying to secure A grade forwards, or any players in general. Sure Hall was handy, but the Bulldogs have never been a chance to secure a long term A grade key forward ever since the league went national. We're debating money here.

Melbourne and the Dogs are still required to pay the minimum under the cap, yes? Their football department spending is obviously curtailed, but they have as much to spend on player payments as the other sides, don't they?

Like I said, you can't have it both ways.

Arguing Tippet and Franklin when it suits your argument (now) and how we 'poached' guys like Keendy and McGlynn (you do remember them, yes?), Richards, Mumford, Jolly (lost back to Melbourne) etc. simply for MORE playing time, not just a chance at Premiership success is lost on me.

Your recruits sold their souls to join a Premiership team to hang a medallion, ours joined a team ethos to earn one. My view, agree to disagree.

Right. So then you'll know it doesn't add up. An extra 900k a year doesn't allow for both Tippet and Buddy.
No but it's enough to price them out of every other clubs range.

Tippett is a 500k player getting 800k

Buddy is an 800k player getting 1.2mil.

Without cola you can't pay these two enough to join a new team.

Preety irresponsible by the Swans to take up so much of the cap on two key forwards IMO

What happens if the contract is signed, and then the AFL scraps the COLA? How will Sydney then be able to afford two massive contracts, and a gun list within their salary cap? Could come back and bite them on the ass.

I think it would end up in court with the Swans winning. You can't change the rules of the game after the fact.

Gotta love Eddie. Real equalisation is about having a even salary cap(which I believe is fair) but in the same sentence completely disregards Collingwoods advantages over the smaller clubs. He is a joke

And just think, if you actually cared when it was happening to a non Vic side this may not have happened. Gunston played well on Saturday....

You obviously didn't listen all to well did you?

"Equal playing field" in its purest form is the salary cap, the fixture and the draft". If any one of these is not adhered to, the competition is compromised. This is what Ed has been banging on about since 2002.

Just for the record, considering it is a 23 round season, we are more than entitled to play 11 HOME games at the MCG. That is our entitlement just like any other club to play 11 HOME games.

How's Simonds Stadium going by the way?

Disagree.
We had the AFL President publicly deriding us. Players willingly leaving us and a discarded player leading the work ethic in a 'cortina' midfield that "wouldn't win many games playing that ugly style of football" up against a glorious WCE midfield in 2005 (insert asterisk) winngin a GF and losing another in 2006 (insert another asterisk) in 2006 in 2012

Do not sully history by buying into media hype.

We apologise for winning the "unwinnable cup" in 2012

Sincerely

Sydney

I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

So what extra advantages are Collingwood afforded in a salary cap sense over the smaller clubs?

I'd have faith in our management that we could pull it off. Think when they put forth this offer they were aware that COLA could be strapped/reduced etc and they'd have a strategy in place if that does happen.

The idea of a COLA is not a bad one. The problem is it's execution.

The AFL should have every club on the same salary cap. Then they need to look at the cost differential for living in all cities where AFL teams are every year as it varies form year to year.
At the end of each year, the AFL is handed the total player payments from each club. This information has each individuals salary clearly marked that make up the TPP for each club. The league then send out payments to each player equivalent to the percentage of the COL that has been calculated.

For example. Player A is on $500,000 per year and plays for Sydney. It is calculated that it costs 20% more than say Adelaide to live in Sydney. The player gets an extra $100K deposited into his account. Player B lives in Melbourne also on $500K. It is calculated to be 10% more expensive to live in Melbourne, so that player gets $50,000 extra. This is done for all players. The AFL get this money off the player's own clubs before sending it out.

This way it is fair. It also helps with free agency as offers can be like for like with the COLA added after the fact.

I know it would be a large accounting nightmare but for a multibillion dollar business, it would be easy to implement.

Thoughts?
