Yes they moved for a chance at premiership success, and that is one form of advantages currently lower ranked teams don't have. However this advantage tends to rotate around over the long term, although things like COLA abuse makes it harder for that rotation to happen (which is why the closest equivalent was eventually taken off Brisbane).

All I'm going to say is 9 year term is extremely high risk and could back fire and restrict the club in recruitment and retention for years to come, especially considering that this will fuel clubs opposition to COLA to a new level to the point the AFL's hand may be forced to remove or alter the allowance

Swans only win because of COLA? Why dont we play the grand final at random venues like in the NFL? Rather then every year at the G? Why do Collingwood play practically all the games at the G? There is no evenness in AFL.
Melbourne and the Dogs are still required to pay the minimum under the cap, yes? Their football department spending is obviously curtailed, but they have as much to spend on player payments as the other sides, don't they?

Arguing Tippet and Franklin when it suits your argument (now) and how we 'poached' guys like Keendy and McGlynn (you do remember them, yes?), Richards, Mumford, Jolly (lost back to Melbourne) etc. simply for MORE playing time, not just a chance at Premiership success is lost on me.
Your recruits sold their souls to join a Premiership team to hang a medallion, ours joined a team ethos to earn one. My view, agree to disagree.

Tippett is a 500k player getting 800k
Buddy is an 800k player getting 1.2mil.
Without cola you can't pay these two enough to join a new team.

What happens if the contract is signed, and then the AFL scraps the COLA? How will Sydney then be able to afford two massive contracts, and a gun list within their salary cap? Could come back and bite them on the ass.

Gotta love Eddie. Real equalisation is about having a even salary cap(which I believe is fair) but in the same sentence completely disregards Collingwoods advantages over the smaller clubs. He is a joke

"Equal playing field" in its purest form is the salary cap, the fixture and the draft". If any one of these is not adhered to, the competition is compromised. This is what Ed has been banging on about since 2002.
Just for the record, considering it is a 23 round season, we are more than entitled to play 11 HOME games at the MCG. That is our entitlement just like any other club to play 11 HOME games.

I'd have faith in our management that we could pull it off. Think when they put forth this offer they were aware that COLA could be strapped/reduced etc and they'd have a strategy in place if that does happen.
The idea of a COLA is not a bad one. The problem is it's execution.
The AFL should have every club on the same salary cap. Then they need to look at the cost differential for living in all cities where AFL teams are every year as it varies form year to year.
At the end of each year, the AFL is handed the total player payments from each club. This information has each individuals salary clearly marked that make up the TPP for each club. The league then send out payments to each player equivalent to the percentage of the COL that has been calculated.
For example. Player A is on $500,000 per year and plays for Sydney. It is calculated that it costs 20% more than say Adelaide to live in Sydney. The player gets an extra $100K deposited into his account. Player B lives in Melbourne also on $500K. It is calculated to be 10% more expensive to live in Melbourne, so that player gets $50,000 extra. This is done for all players. The AFL get this money off the player's own clubs before sending it out.
This way it is fair. It also helps with free agency as offers can be like for like with the COLA added after the fact.
I know it would be a large accounting nightmare but for a multibillion dollar business, it would be easy to implement.
