Buddy getting an unfair go by the umpires

I thought Buddy was given a more than fair go. Anyone see him holding Rance's jumper or receiving the ball while he was out of bounds? His don't argue to the face? The umpires didn't!

They make up for it by giving him an unfair free pass at the MRP. There are so many times he should've been suspended for his reckless/negligent/dangerous style of play but he is told to move along. I mean FFS, he drove a Crow into the ground with a headlock back when he was at Hawthorn, something that could easily have resulted in a broken neck, and he didn't even get any points. He's a protected species and it's a bloody joke.

Hardly unique to Buddy, other than probably Nick Riewoldt most key forwards get a tough time of it. He does get mugged in marking contests and it's made to look worse by the fact he's a shithouse contested mark but he does get away with his fair share of fend offs to the face.

Yeah, exactly. It's not so much a Buddy issue as an issue with the adjudication regarding the treatment of key forwards in general. Hawkins is another who should probably get a lot more free kicks than he does. The umpires are currently very lenient on defenders when applying the rules.

In saying that, Buddy gets his fair share of advantages — his "natural arc", the ability to fend guys off high without being penalized, his great run with the MRP etc.

I think the only thing we as supporters can ask is that the rules are interpreted consistently, from round to round, player to player, and team to team. In some instances, defenders are allowed to maul forwards; in some instances, they're not. In some instances; a high fend off is a free kick; in some, it's not.

I'm actually wondering if we need a fourth field umpire, with one responsible just for watching for holding and shepherding up forward. Umpires seem to miss so much as balls are coming in... they must be frequently unsighted.

he was penalised four times for very minor infringements. .

I only saw two off his frees against tonight; one was an obvious push in the back: Rance went for the mark and Buddy had both hands in his back and blatantly shoved him. The other free was a kicking in danger when Buddy tried to kick the Richmond players' head off.

He gets penalised alot because he's reckless. He throws his arms around thinking he's some tough guy but he's just costing his team cheap free kicks.

He does also get scragged alot but no more than any other forward these days.

I was sitting on the wing, probably 30m from the forward 50 and you could see Rance hanging on to him. He'd beat him in the contest and Rance would drag him to the ground. It was ****ing frustrating to see him deliberately tripped when he started to run on to a free ball. He copped a bit of luck in the 3rd & 4th, especially for the face palm.

Have to agree he was held at every contest and should have gotten quite a few more free kicks, pretty poor form from the umpires. Duck said as much directly after the match. Tippett (when he was at the Crows) and Walker have a similar problem, the umpires tend to let holds or contact to arms or over the shoulder go more than they should and yet the AFL wonder why more goals aren't being scored.

Yeah it's happening to every big forward, but some get a better ride than others, such as J.Riewoldt and Schulz.

I think it was mentioned last year when Evans was looking into the umpiring and that mental case was still the umpires coach. He mentioned something about letting the bigger guys go at it fairly.

I don't really agree about the mug part, he's been pretty good this year. But it's hard to compete when your arms are tied to your sides by a defender who isn't even looking at the ball.

I think he gets a bigger free ride than any other player in the comp. Any one else would be called play on for running off their line, for buddy the umpires make everyone else standstill and watch.

Either you're taking the piss or you missed the entire game.

The scragging is what made the game ugly, if the umps paid a few early (both ways may I add), the game would have been better.

Whilst Buddy does sometimes get unfair treatment, I've seen him push players in the back to take a mark many times without the umpires paying a free, although that's not his fault.

Edit: Have since discovered the headlock against Crows at AAMI in 2013 which did look pretty bad. Was like a WWF move, lucky to get off. Apologies for original comment. Seems to be involved in lots of headlocks does Buddy.

Tonight was the first time all year he's been treated unfairly by the umps. But for almost all of 2014 he's received the best umpire treatment of his career.

Also, it happens to just about every forward in every marking contest in the forward line. Remember the mark that should have been paid to Cotchin if he hadn't had his arms chopped in the last couple minutes of the game? Isn't that just a perfect example of what the op was talking about

Inconceivable. Haven't you heard that every single decision went for Sydney tonight? How on earth could Buddy have been scragged?

Certainly you got three key decisions late in the game that cost Richmond badly. There was a mark that wasn't paid to Richmond on their attacking 50 and two very clear holding the ball decisions that the Swans got away with inside their defensive 50.

That said, Franklin should have had a handful of frees within goalkicking range. That miss for the trip early in the game was a disgrace as were a couple of others.

All in all, it probably evened out over the course of the game.

What the umps need to realise is when you see it early in a match you pay it. The problem tonight was you let a few go early and the player is going to know they can get away with it all night.

It's the same with incorrect disposal and every other rule. Establish it early and the players will adjust.
