Building a team is like building a house. You need structure and strong supports. Wallace has gone the other way and painted the house and filled the windows in before the house is even built .

Hawthorn now only need a last coat of paint and hope auction day brings sun and warmish weather.

Why do people continue to compare our situation to that of Hawthorn.

They began to rebuild properly in 2001 we didn't start to 2004.

They like us didn't go for the spine in 2001, 2002, 2003 that started in their 4th year.

We are on the right track.

Are we, well I'll stop worrying then.:thumbsu:

.... and building a house is like building a marriage.

And building a marriage is like building a building out of grass.

And building a building out of grass is like Richmond's recruitment technique ;)

Rubbish.

The AFL system does not allow you to bring in the wreckers and demolish a house in one go. The AFL system does not allow you to buy and have all the new materials delivered at once

You have to slowly dismantle the old house virtually brick by brick, then you have to have the materials slowly delivered over a 3-4 year time frame.

Currently we are building the new house. Unfortunately 2007 has seen us unable to put the tarp up in time. We have been a bit exposed due to injuries and some slower than expected development.

Like all construction sites nothing ever goes entirely to plan, but at least we have a plan of what the new house will look like

Anyone notice Terry doesn't flood anymore?

Maybe this year we are building from the ground up (attacking game plan and playing kids)... can't build on soggy ground with flood water ;)

Are you alright, Hawthorn was trying to win a premiership in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004. Remember the we are going to win the premiership speech by Peter Schwab in 04.

Both our rebuilds started in 2004 when both clubs finished last and 2nd last, Hawthorn axed majority of the list and so did Richmond.

Why is it that Hawthorn supporters love to troll this page.
I couldn't be bothered looking at their page.....interest in Hawks- NIL.

Translation: You can't handle the facts and instead of accepting them you call the poster a troll.

You have no idea what you're talking about!!! a simple i was wrong would have been more honorable :)

we've both since learned that once most of the crap had been cut away from both lists Hawks had more substance than we did (Hodge, Mitchell, Boyle, Croad, Ladsen, Bateman, Brown, Williams and sewell are a pretty solid base to work around). Wallace was wrong in stating our list was better, perhaps it was short term but reality is its certainly not now and we have to suck it up. Both have cut about 24-25 players since 04, hawthorn went the whole way and traded away players for 1st and 2nd rounders, we didnt. They are ahead of us fair and square, we just need to rape this years draft and land a big fish in the PSD and we wont be far off.

Richmond's version of "Hodge, Mitchell, Boyle, Williams, Brown etc " is the "Deledio, Tambling, Polak, Foley, Raines" bunch.

Our "Franklin, Roughead, Ellis, Thorp" are yet to be drafted. If we catch up the calibre of those 4 players in the next 2 years then we're set, atm to be "even" with Hawthorn we need to find young equals to Hodge, Mitchell, Boyle, Williams and Brown etc.

The actual kids we've drafted are pretty even since 2004 with Hawthorn getting an extra PP than us. So to be better than them we must draft the same amout of talent they already had before 2004 (the above mentioned group). Does this sound reasonable? Our original advantage was a better senior group in Richo, Brown, Bowden, Gaspar, Kellaway, Chaffey, Campbell etc, but most of these players are no longer an "advantage".
I'm not putting much thought into this post so I apologise if I'm rambling :p

spot on benny

we have no base, thats the simple truth and are in the process of trying to build one or at the very least a base from which to work with. These guys will be learning the caper for another couple of seasons but the signs are encouraging from that perspective bc its been our young guys who have consistently stood up this season not the older hacks.

Good draft this year, another one next year and we're well on our way to sorting our list structure out.

Well we did trade Ottens for picks 12 and 16.

Very well put benny

I've been trying to explain this (timeframe) in a few different posts.

Don't remember having played Hawthorn this year. Has that result slipped my mind?

Let that result be a barometer for where both teams stand. Until then, Hawthorn can go fcuk themselves.

I've been watching Coburg over the past few weeks....and maybe the RFC drought has me seeing mirages......but....I'm beginning to see in Jack something more than a forward....could he be a crash and bash utility ala Jonathan Brown last year for Brissy:confused:

Well we did trade Ottens for picks 12 and 16.

yep that one slipped my mind. But still, we traded Ottens for picks, they traded Hay, Thompson and Everitt. One more good draft this year and it brings us back to the field, especially if we land a quality player in the PSD which i think is looking more and more likely.

If we could get a 1st Rounder (Pick 12) for say Bowden and upgrade our pick 19 by trading another player then we would end up with say picks 1, 9, 12 and 17.

Throw in 2008's first rounder and we would have caught up to where Hawthorn is now... only problem is they will have added two more picks. One potential way to get ahead within 2 years is to get another PP in 2008, making it picks 1, 2, 17, but that is not going to happen now is it!!

So far I think Hodge can be 'equalled' by gaining Cotchin. We've still got the calibre of Mitchell, Williams, Boyle, Sewell and Brown to catch up. People think it's so simple and that because the Hawks are winning that they picked better kids between 2004-2006 but it's just not true.

It would also be nice to unearth a genuine star capable of being in the top 10 players of the comp to match Buddy's output, JON may be our only potential surprise "next big thing" but it would be laughable to expect that to happen! Ironically Tambling is our best bet atm :D Maybe Lids.
Hopefully we get lucky. JON, Hughes and Casserly must all be very good otherwise 2005 was a complete waste (nowhere near enough picks).

Building a house is hard work, especially when the old one needs to keep standing while the new one is built around it.
