Burgatron 2009 - Adelaide's Targets

Name 1.

Davis & Dangermouse were both expected to go in R1, just not necessarily as early as we took them.

When it comes to Dangermouse, most of the BF fans had their usual "Crows are from Adelaide so they'll draft a South Australian" fixation happening, with the blinkers preventing them from seeing any possibility other than Ebert.

Davis missed most of his draft year through injury. Even so, he was still expected to go late in the first round (most likely to Hawthorn).

Okay, I'm assuming you're "name 1" was to little known players not for the players we picked that weren't predicted. Okay so maybe Danger & Davis weren't little known players, but people didn't think we'd pick them so early. I wasn't on BF back in 2007 when Danger was picked, so I didn't know what people were saying on here, but the media were expecting us to pick Ebert, and then they kept reminding us of that in 2008 when Danger stayed in Victoria.

Burgan has invariably noted our interest in the players we drafted, he's just misread the level of interest.

Here's his write-up from the 2008 Burgatron:
10 – ADELAIDE – JACKSON TRENGOVE
Calder Cannons, VIC, Tall forward, November 1, 1990, 196.5cm, 88.5kg
(Draft range: 5-16)

The choice at No.10 is understood to be out of talls Trengove, Phil Davis, Shaun McKernan, Johnston and Ryan Schoenmakers. Hill if available has also been linked, but the quest for height down back and up forward is a priority for the Crows, which points to the flexibility of Trengove, Davis and McKernan. It won't surprise if it's Davis or McKernan, but Trengove's recent medical clearance after knee and hamstring injuries may give him the nod, particularly as many regarded him as a potential top five selection before his setback mid-year. It is also understood, the Crows have spent an enormous amount of time on Trengove in recent weeks.

The 2007 Burgatron:
10 – ADELAIDE – BRAD EBERT

Port Adelaide Magpies, SA, Medium midfielder, April 2 1990, 188.2cm, 85.4kg

Ebert could fall to the Brisbane Lions (No.8) and Jack Grimes to Adelaide: he is also in strong contention here. Ebert has also been linked to Essendon, Fremantle, St Kilda and Hawthorn, but realistically he seems set to be chosen in the No.8-12 range. Alex Rance and Scott Selwood, who appears to be climbing up the pecking order, are also in Adelaide's thinking. The Crows also seriously considered Patrick Dangerfield and Cyril Rioli, but it believed those two players are now unlikely to be selected at No.10.

Bio: Noted for his strong attack on the ball, overhead marking and his versatility. He is a graduate of AIS-AFL Academy and touted as potential leader. Captained South Australia at the 2007 NAB AFL U18 Championships, averaging 22 possessions throughout the carnival and he was the only South Australian to earn All-Australian honours. Nephew of Russell Ebert and cousin of Port Adelaide's Brett Ebert. From Henley FC.

That's just the first rounders.

He also nominated Sloane as being of interest to us at 28 in 2008 - we got him at 44. The only surprise there was that McKernan was still avaiable at our selection, so it was pants down & laps around the table time. Adelaide's interest in Smack also got a mention, but he was predicted to go at #21.

I could go on...

I can't think of too many players who Rendell has selected who Burgan didn't at least not our interest in. He just didn't get the actual selections correct.

There was also the whole "lets have an Ebert at the Crows to make up for the brothers Cornes at the Power" as well as Ebert spending time training at the Crows for his AIS thing.

I think we were also keen to see the Crows draft a half decent first rounder for once and Ebert was seen as certain a 200 gamer as you could get.

When it came to Ebert, there was absolutely no conceivable reason, that anyone could think of, why we should pass on him. When he fell, it was inconceivable to all that there could actually be a better player available.

Symesy - Vader's response was because people constantly say that about Rendell but, as he points out, it's not really true. We don't take no-namers, we don't even take people not expected to go around our pick, we just don't take the name that everyone expects us to take. Usually the player we pick up is the second or third most common name linked with us, but by draft day the most common name is considered an unbackable favourite and then we don't read his name out.

Also, if you want a laugh, go and read the Dangerfield thread in The Locker Room. People go absolutely nuts when Ebert isn't selected, and just as people are starting to accept it the news breaks about him staying in Victoria for a year and people go nuts again :D

In 2007 Burgan predicted Dangermouse would go to Melbourne with pick #14. We took him at pick #10. Similarly, in 2008 he predicted Davis would go to Hawthorn at pick #16. Once again, we nabbed him at #10.

Neither jumped dramatically, both were tipped to go late in the first round - and that's exactly what happened. Rendell didn't pluck them from nowhere, as is the common misconception. What he did do wasconvince everyone that we'd be taking other players, so when our true colours were revealed everyone thought it had come out of left field.

A lot of this has to do with the obsession people seem to have with Adelaide taking South Australian players. In 2007 it was Ebert (we took Dangermouse). In 2008 it was Johnstone, with Trengove being the 2nd favourite (albeit not from SA) - we took Davis.

I'm only up to page 6 and I'm almost in tears! Geeez! All those people will be laughing at themselves now! Especially the ones saying "SACK RENDELL!" And one comment "I look forward to trading him for a 3rd rounder in 2009" - can't see Danger going anywhere soon...:)

To be fair, we took him at #71 in the draft. Any selections that late could well be regarded as a chook raffle.

Yeah, that's why I used the  emoticon - he has been very good at picking interest, that's for sure, especially in the first few rounds.

My favourite moment was Stiffy_18 (from memory) talking about how we stuffed that pick up and someone commented that it just meant we thought of Dangerfield as a better player than Ebert and Stiffy_18 replied "hence the problem" :D I'm sure the "In Rendell we trust" catchphrase was born from that moment :D

Edit: My mistake, it was Mad Dog.

It's funny how the thread stops for a couple of months after everyone goes nuts and when it comes back everyone is raving about how good Dangerfield is.

People got over it as soon as they saw his highlights video ;)

You can understand why people were upset though. We'd stuffed up so many first rounders by then and lost kids going interstate and suddenly we pass on what was considered a sure thing for a kid who doesn't even want to be at the club for the next year. I remember being annoyed myself (it was before my time on BF) but got over it pretty quickly when I remembered that we almost never play first year players anyway.

Although bow to Rendalls knowledge I agree with Vader in not excited in taking Craig with 2nd round pick as believe we have more than enough smallish ruckman to cover ruck ,forward and defence.
As only Griffin and lesser extent Maric of any size I would like to pick up a giant project ruckman as late draft or rookie
As previous posted after seeing Stansbury play in SANFL finals agree with Sergei that as speedy crumbing forward Stansbury would be a great low draft pick up.
After seeing highlights on BF would love to get Gunston into our squad .

And thats why I reckon Bartlett's injury will not scare Rendell away and we may take him with pick 13. We dont need our no 1 pick to make an impact for us in 2010, we have other blokes who need a go. If Bartlett is as good as they reckon then I would take the punt. We took punts on Hentschell, Burton and Martin so its not like we believe you cant recover from a knee injury.

Vader/Stabby/Nikki

Can we have a draft tool Hall of Fame where we immortalize posts such as 'sack rendell'?
And you need our permission to do this, why?

Feel free - no reason why you need our help to start a thread & locate all the embarrassing posts from the assorted Adelaide BigFooty luminaries.

I'd be interested to see if you can find any of my old posts which put egg on my face... I suspect there aren't many, but there are probably some out there somewhere if you look hard enough.

I'd suggest that our drafting of Bartlett at #13 is now looking unlikely. Burgan might not have correctly predicted our first round draftees, but he's at least mentioned them in his "also considering" spiel. Bartlett doesn't rate a mention this year....

Thats classic Rendell, if he showed interest in Barlett, it might prompt a team before pick 13 to jump as they wouldnt be expecting him to be available at pick 29. It's just a funny feeling I have, but then again I could be wrong.

Really since the start of the year, I have had my eye on Jetta. I thought there wasn't any chance what so ever with WCE having a pick before us, but now it seems as Sheppard has taken over his place. I would be rapt with us taking Jetta and I think we will take him if available. Still in my phantom, I have Jetta going to WCE - as it may not be locked in yet.

Just all reminds me too much of Leroy Jetta.

Would avoid.

Looking forward to Quayles.

I could live with Jetta as our first selection, Craig is a stretch for Pick 29 considering we all ready have undersized Ruckman. The rest i would be disappointed with. IF we need a Ruckman/KPP Fitzpatrick, Panos and Griffiths would be options.

I would really like Adelaide to choose a bolter like Trent Dennis-Lane a player who fills a list requirement.

Koby Stevens looks vaguely impressive. No point speculating too much though, we get who we get and they'll be guns because Rendell picked them. ;)

Iles at 61 seems unlikely since Rendell said we wouldn't go for a recycled player until the rookie draft, though Burgan seems to indicate we won't get him in the rookie draft if we wait. Perhaps Rendell was feeding us porkies.

The chances of picking up a quality junior at 61 is so remote that its not a consideration given the history of those picks in strong drafts nevermind weak ones like this

Why not a recycled ........more likely a SANFL player I would have thought?
