It's a catch 22 though. If we had have decided he's a mid only and waited until he was ready to play AFL mid, he'd probably only being playing his 5th game and wouldn't be ready to play AFL mid.

The thing is Cal did get mid time when he first started it was only really the last two seasons where he was pigeoned holed as a small forward.

We were still a decent team 2019 the ball got to the 50 more and he got the ball more. Once the supply dried up his confidence left and his lack of forward craft was exposed. Now that he’s been moved into a role he can get his hands on the footy his confidence seems to be up. Same thing happened with WHE IMO.

2/3 of his disposals were handballs, so that 65% D/E is very low considering most of the time it's short handballs.

He looks okay as a midfielder, but can you use up one of your prime full time midfield slots on a guy whose just okay? If we could then Josh Thomas would be in there.

I think he was better than ok and he may have showed enough to suggest that with a bit more time he could wind up a good midfielder. From a playing list perspective what do we have to lose with Daicos done for the year, Sier likely on the way out and Sidebottom going as well as a Ford Probe?

He seems to do better when he has less time to think about what he's doing, if that makes any sense. His instincts are good but often second-guesses them when he has time (only gotta look at his goal-kicking...), good effort and if he can continue to build upon it then he'll be hard to drop

We don't know if he is part of our future in the midfield but at the very least he is now played in a position that showcases his good hands and breakaway pace.

He made a positive contribution yesterday and hopefully he gets a few more rounds to build on that.

Those looking at Cal through the lens of him as a failed small forward should accept that this was never his position.

We don't know if he is part of our future in the midfield but at the very least he is now played in a position that showcases his good hands and breakaway pace.

He made a positive contribution yesterday and hopefully he gets a few more rounds to build on that.

Agreed and a string of games in the midfield can only increase his comfort and confidence.

When your list managers are deplorable with list depth and your coaches cant develop. He is our best option currently to step in and proved he is up to it.

Not every player has to be of star quality , of which we have sadly been sucked in to believe and over paid certain players. We need role players and guys that know how to play their position.

I've been saying it for a few years, Callum along with quite a few others are a victim of our poor player development of the last 5 years. He's no star but he is a midfielder

He played a good game. Like everyone, I'm happy to see him played in his right position.

Beyond stats, he was important in the midfield yesterday. He helped keep the ball alive, helped squeeze Richmond's exits, and his handballs in tight were directly responsible for more than the two clearances he is credited with.

Pleased for him, pleased for us.

He plays an exhausting style of football, nothing economical about it, but hopefully he can extend his game time to 75% this year.

I suppose the challenge is that now he has been given the opportunity as a midfielder, he proves everyone wrong and continues to improve and ‘own’ the position. If not, he will be pushed aside.

Incidentally 2/3’s of Sier’s disposals are handballs. Admittedly there have been some good ones in there (but also some ordinary).
But Brown has some pace which if he learns to use it (which he did on occasion) and burst through, a clear handball is fine.

i think you're underestimating his other drawbacks. He's multifaceted.

Yeah, I think he'll learn. First game as a full time mid, it'll be a learning curve for him no doubt. But geez, there was so much to like, and promise.

Who knew playing him in his natural position would showcase his strengths.

And the thing is, this is what we're lacking. Youth in his age bracket in the midfield.

He is quick, can kick both sides, is tough, evasive and gives 100%. All essential qualities for a mid.

It has been a lack of confidence that has held him back because in 2019 we all thought he’d arrived.

If he can achieve yesterday performance consistently, he’s a keeper and adds much needed inside mid depth.
