Interesting quote “proved many wrong”.
Are they talking internally within the Club? Or the media, or just BigFooty?
We were all right up until this game, he has been ordinary.

This was an exception to what we have seen and lets hope this is the game that turns things around for Cal.

He looked like he finally may have a future, this is a good thing.

I'm going to say social media, as the mass media go pretty easy on him.
I think you’re right.
Surprised that the Club responds to Social media comments/trends.
Clubs encourage players to ignore.
Shouldn’t they also ignore?

Callum Brown in the midfield

23-year-old Callum Brown set high expectations for himself after he burst onto the scene in his debut season. In 2021, there has been limited opportunity for Brown as he’s spent multiple games on the sidelines as the medical sub.

Brown returned to the VFL a week ago in an attempt to regain form and get a full match under his belt. Given the opportunity to play a full match in the midfield, Brown flourished. He finished the mach against Sandringham with 29 disposals, six clearances and six tackles.

Returning to the senior side, Brown found a lot more midfield time against the Tigers and he seized the opportunity with both hands. Brown was electric around the contest, his speed and explosiveness on display all afternoon. He finished the afternoon with 24 disposals, six marks and a goal assist from just 64% game time.

Just BF and other such platforms. Still only early days.

Nah, not all. There have been some who have been justifiably critical of his performances as/when warranted. There are others who just went over the top with the "spud", "never be an AFL footballer" "run him out of the club immediately" style crap. Says more about them than it does Brown.

Doesn't mean they wouldn't monitor what's being said. Given they have a presence on these platforms, I don't think their response is an issue.

With our current midfield and injury list, we have scope to play 1 young / developing midfielder.

Pendles, Adams, Sidebottom, Crisp, De Goey & either C or T Brown or Sier.

At the moment, he’s leading the pack.

Do we move Sidebottom to the forward pocket and play Sier too? That’s a coaching decision.

If Sidey is carrying a back problem serious enough to necessitate a back brace he simply shouldn't be on the park.

He is quick, can kick both sides, is tough, evasive and gives 100%. All essential qualities for a mid.

It has been a lack of confidence that has held him back because in 2019 we all thought he’d arrived.

If he can achieve yesterday performance consistently, he’s a keeper and adds much needed inside mid depth.

“can kick both sides” is VERY generous.

Cal’s pass on the run and under pressure to DeGoey innQ4 on Sunday was the best kick he has ever struck on an AFL field but let’s not get carried away and gloss over the many, many costly, confidence-sapping butchered passes and shots at goal over the past 2-3 seasons that have had us all pulling our hair out.

He's put a couple of good games together, good on him. Hopefully he can continue to build and finish off the year strongly.

He has great leg speed and in traffic his handballs hit the target more often than not. He definitely has a quick brain. Thats not enough but it helps. Definitely more suited up the ground where he can dish off to a player in space.. or run with it and kick longer than 35 metres.

Talent is permanent - form is temporary.
He has the skills but has lacked confidence due to playing out of position.
Look at WHE as a similar example -sadly out of form and now thriving on the wing, when most thought him done.
I don’t get why you’re trying to detract from CB’s performance instead of being upbeat like most others.
Obviously you weren’t genuine with your earlier praise.

Sidey is cooked. We gain nothing by playing him through the middle. Should play more forward. Has the nouse and footy smarts up forward.

The other thing about Cal playing in the midfield is he’s usually surrounded by more options, up forward he can get the ball isolated without a handball outlet then tends to be indecisive so it another weakness covered.

For all the sh*t ive posted about him in this thread i thought that was probably the best game hes ever played for Collingwood good to see the coaches try something different with him.

hope he can push on with it from here
Ditto.
I’ve also hung tonnes of shit on him.
It’s easily the best game he’s ever played.

That’s a terrible comparison. WHE has always been an elite kick (and an excellent overhead mark). WHE’s problem when low on confidence/form is getting the ball. There has never been any doubt about his ability to use it. Cal shows heart and endeavour but has always struggled to kick more than 35 metres with any accuracy or penetration. I’m really happy that he played so well on a Sunday and hope he draws great confidence from it but one improved performance doesn’t magically rectify his skill deficiencies, which are substantial.

skill deficiencies?
What are they specifically, that are not up to AFL standard?

You might need to ask yourself what they are because in fairness, he has quite a few deficiences and I think you know what they are. Doesn't mean he can't overcome them. No point arguing when you know yourself that he has limits

sorry - I see skills that have been impacted by lack of confidence but no fundamental deficiencies that preclude his progress as an AFL player.

At around 10.02 on the replay, he kicks while being pressured by Bolton from inside the center square, over 45metres and hits JDG, with a great pass.
So the absurd contention that he can’t kick 35m is fanciful.

So please tell us what these deficiencies are, because over the years his fundamental skills have been sound IMO and only suffered when he’s been down in confidence- which happens with all players as per my earlier example of WHE.

There are a few in Cals position in my opinion. He is a pure mid with no tricks to get games into him in another position, hence the frustration at him sitting in a forward pocket. Apart from ‘having a go’ he just doesn’t cut it as a forward but who do you move out of the top liners to play him as a pure mid (talking more so when we were going ok)? Rantall will be the next one everyone either calls a spud for stinking it up in a pocket or says selection is wrong/blame the coach but where do you get his fist 30 games into him and who do you leave out to do it? Rantall is mid, maybe wing or nothing. Tyler Brown is pure mid and that’s it, he can’t find the footy around the ground so it’s inside the contest or nothing, no forward time or even wing for that matter. Josh Thomas was nearly another along with Blair but both had a bit more forward nous to carve out a career for themselves. Remember Beams rating Thomas very highly as a mid early days. Sometimes it would be good to think of the reasons why certain things happen before someone is automatically labeled a spud or on the flip side, the selection panel labeled as having no idea. Anyway hopefully Cal gets the last 6 games to show us what he has.
